Japanese Anyone? Can you give us some Japanese recipes, please?

Recommended Posts

I love Japanese food. It's healthy, nice to look at, and even better to eat  !My problem is that, although I can make the basics that everyone know about, like sushis, sashimis, a mean chicken teriyaki, and a few other dishes, I find myself unable to find any other recipes to try. I'm not a fussy eater and will try pretty much anything so long as it's not too spicy, or at least can be cooked with less spice than indicated and still retain the flavours.Has anyone got a few recipes to share, or know of a resource site on the web for me to have a look at (in English please, as I've never been able to learn more than a few little words of Japanese)? Also if anyone knows where I could buy Japanese food stuff to be delivered at my home... I don't mean take-aways but the basics food stuff such as rice, sake, a decent soy sauce... Thanks a lot!

http://japanesefood.about.com/ seems like a good place to start for japanese recipes which may tickle your palate. it's fairly organized so you'll get to the information you want in haste. and in english, to boot, so you don't need to learn kanji. :( check out http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ too while you're at it.

where are you from, by the way, freshpub? ain't there no japanese specialty stores (or even asian ones) near you? heck, even a major grocery chain in your area could be carrying the stuff you need for your recipes already! :( better than to have ingredients shipped to you when buying from online stores. at least you can physically handle and check the items you need. if you're okay with online stores, here's one which caters to clients who want "japan delivered to your door": https://www.japancentre.com/en .
there's https://www.asianfoodgrocer.com/ too. i just googled them so i can't really make guarantees on them. :( if you want, check out amazon.com too, which carry asian products which include japanese ingredients. :P

thanks serverph! I'll check out the websites you've suggested.I actually live on the Isle of Wight, England. We do have a big chain supermarket not too far, but their selection is small and I don't think it tastes like the real thing... I haven't found any specialist store here. Mind you, I can't even found a take away that does Japanese, so I don't think there's a good chance a finding somewhere that offer the food stuff needed!

Have you tried making Chawanmushi? It's a Japanese egg dish that's not too difficult to make and tastes absolutely great. Here's the instruction on youtube: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/

You can check out other videos by the same user (http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/) as well. They're all cooking videos of Japanese dishes..I think there are nearly 40 of them. The guy narrating in the video has a bit of an accent but it shouldn't be too hard to make out what he's saying.
