page refresh in chat applications embedded in web pagesRefresh Web Page

when two persons are communicating via chat application embedded in web page instead of automatically refreshing the page for a particular period of time(say 5 seconds)we can refresh one side of the client page when other side of client submits a message to him which is stored in database,so how can the page be refreshed when only a new data is updated in the server
