Function Of Web Server In Jsp Application

Hi Friends,I am studying JSP now.So a web server like Apache Tomcat is a must to run a jsp application.But I don't know the actual function of this web server.Can you give a correct answer that what is the function of the web server.To deploy the application we need to paste the file into corresponding folder of the web server.
