News Title: USB Flash Drive With FingerPrint Recognition

News Source: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/

I found this just a few seconds ago, i though i had to share the news, i really find this a plus because many people actually save confidencial and copyrighted data in usb drives, i know i do and i know many of my friends also do.

I use to have many portable programs, personal pictures and other data on the usb that i would not want to share with anyone except a few persons, and even if you do not see this new type of usb drive as a plus, perhaps you will if you have a company or other files you just want completely secure.

For now, there will be only with 1GB tops, but i guess this will develop in a short period of time.

There are a few drives that have fingerprint recognition, but many have been rubbished for providing no real extra protection to your data. Most only use the fingerprint to 'activate' the drive (ie. turn it on, so to speak) then it acts normally. Good for ease of use, but your data is no more secure than on a normal flash drive - it's still unencrypted. To make it slightly more secure you'd need to encrypt the data with a key based on the digital version of your fingerprint. That would at least add another barrier to anyone who wanted to access your data.

On a side note, the company that makes this drive (Green House Japan) seem to specialise in weird flash drives, including ones shaped like sports equipment, ones shaped like fast food and ones shaped like doughnuts.

Only 1GB? :P It'd be good for small amounts of sensitive information, but say, you have more 'sensitive' information, you would need to acquire more than just one USB drive...But, would it be plug & play? Is the data encrypted? (like jlhaslip said, not just 'locked'), and if so, how 'strong' is the encryption?I will assume it uses a quite low quality fingerprint sensor, that should be able to be cracked using simple, ink, latex gloves, and some saliva...The USB drive shouldn't be particularly popular at this stage, as its storage capacity does not rival that of, say a 8GB drive, which can be encrypted with a 3rd party encryption program...Further research is required into making this the next best 'plug'n play removable storage device' of the century

Yes, 1 GB is not much of a storage space for a pen drive nowadays considering i have a 16 GB pen drive, a 8 GB pen drive is kind of old now, my 8 GB pen has one year old now, and by the way, i think there are 24 GB pen frives available for the comon public now, but i can not say with certanty.Despite the fact that this pen drive has only 1 GB, and the drive is likely not encrypted, it is a normal step one for this new kind of pen drives, i would not be nothing surprised that in a near future we will see this pen drives much more developed in terms of security, with a custom fingerprint recognition, digital encryption software in portable version of course, and i bet it is going to be in the next updated versions.
