Dna Hard Disk (stores Information) +customize Offsprings Genes storage device

Recommended Posts

I won't go too detail because I am not a biology specialist.

DNA/gene stores the genetic information of a person.

By using DNA as a storage device, much more information can be stored within a very little amount of space. I do understand that technology today may not be able to do so but it may happen in the future.

I heard that, I think it was, around 0.17 GB of information could be stored in a gene - correct me if I am wrong (please, if you know). Just let's say that it is a gene that can store information. Also, you know how small and microscopic one gene is. This way, by the size of a modern common hard disk drive, the capacity is huge, beyond "REALISTIC" imagination I think.

Now, by somehow connecting the genes and be able to use the information in the genes, it could be benificial to space available and beleive it or not, customize offsprings as we now (the future) know how to access gene information and possibly alter it.

Very interesting subject but I am not really an Expert in this but I would agree with you about the Hard disk point.

This is not a new thing as DNA tests of storage capacity was tested a few years back and predicted that the magnetic and optical domain will eventually be taken over by the DNA storage system. There has been extensive research going on but the economical viability is not proved as yet. The economical mass production must be feasible before anything that can be said about the future.

If the point comes to this, then when might this storage device be used broadly? In other words, when will it pass the research stage and move into developing and operating in most computers before the magnetic and optical domain takes over? Can you give some examples of the DNA storage tests and the magnetic and optical domains? I am curious about them. Possibly post some information sites.
