Just wondering, why would you want to make a song shorter then it could be, if you want a MP3 Player for a website there is a vast amount of HTML, PHP, C++, and many others that could support a MP3 player but wich might you be using? i could find one for you, or you could google it yourself. Maby look for "Time editable MP3 player"

These are some very nice and customizable players:

http://www.premiumbeat.com/

http://www.wimpyplayer.com/

http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/

http://www.flabell.com/flash/Flash-Mp3-Player-29

Theres really tons of these, some looking really good - all playing full songs though.

If you're looking for backgroundmusic you can also take one of the players and just make the sound loop and make the flash invisible. Don't even need a real player then u can just embed it and script it yourself.

If you do want a player that you can fully customize and build from scratch heres some good info and tutorials.

My first thaught was to just cut up the song and make it play, but I presume u ask this question because you want it to play more than once. In that case the solution could be quite simple too:

Say you need a backgroundmusic (1song) to plat for 5 minutes and your song lasts for two minutes.

You cut up the song in half and save it under a different name.

You play the original one twice (or just loop it as many times as you want) and then the cut up one (which would last as long as you need to fill up the total time) once and you have your five minutes.

The JW Flash Player at https://www.jwplayer.com/about-jwplayer/ might work for you.  You can set a duration in a playlist or as a flashvar when loading a single file.  It should then play up to that duration.  Alternatively, you can use the plugin at http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ to force a time limit for listening to a file.  Detailed information on how to use the player can be found at the first link and at https://www.jwplayer.com/resources/.

Another nice and very simple mp3 player can be found at http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/.  You should be able to only play a portion of a song in an xspf playlist (http://www.xspf.org/) by setting a <duration> tag for the track.
