Lucky you, I'm almost done with my own project of this kind. I was able to edit files from i386 folder of my xpcd installer, changed the default theme and wallpaper including cursors (from default to aero cursors), I have also changed the default audio and the user picture, the welcome screen and lastly, I also make it an unattended version without using nlite.

I think it is great Idea to change XP default Icon without any softwares. I will try within this week.

Its easy dude.just right click the icon to change and den choose the desired pic or pattern and the apply.

Changing the whole icons of the system manually will take a long time. Also, its not easy to manage or track the icons which were manually modified. There are many programs as given above. I have another one to add which is a dedicated program for icons. The name of the program is iColorFolder. Download from http://icolorfolder.sourceforge.net/. The program takes no resources as it doesn't run always, it just loads the icons and closes the program. It has more features, you can right click any folder and assign a color label to the folder. The additional skins pack on the website will be more than enough to keep you happy for many days. And did I mention that its free and open source.

 

The program is no longer maintained, but well it has all the features it should have, no? If you know programming dive into the code and do whatever you want.

It'll not really take a long time. You can use IconTweaker and get some sexy packs and click Apply. Does it in seconds, it's harmless and you can go back to the default icons. You can even make one yourself but that'd be the same as adding manually.

I means not what you say. I like to change icons without installing any softwares. I can change My computer, My documents, Network places, Hardware icons without installing any software like that I want to change whole computer Icon what I like.

Well, but it'll be a hassle to change everything. To change my computer, etc icons, just right click your desktop, Propreties, Desktop, Settings (or icons, idk I don't use XP anymore) and then you can download or make an icon pack, put the images on the folder/place and start replacing. I just warn you, changing everything manually will be a waste of time.

I'm new to this , hence have no clue how to go aboout doing this. I'm using win xp pro sp2 and want to use win 7. What is the procedure to do this ? can I keep both and select on start up which operating sys to boot? IF not then how can I go about materialising these changes ...

 My system is a pentium 4

2.80 Ghz , 500 mb ram and 80 gb hard disk.

will this change harm my system ?

is my system competent to handle win7 or the harware requirement increases for Win7 ?

Giving XP the Vista look -- Changing the icons and much more!!How To Change Xp IconOk so you want to edit the whole icons for XP. So here we go...1)First of all download a software called IconTweaker which is a freeware. You will get it here...http://www.crystalxp.net/)Next, download vista icons or vista iconpack. You can get it yurself. Alternatively, you can get it from http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ or from http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/)Next step is to set up the icons for my computer, my docs etc. In icon tweaker by clicking the iT button (or you may call it a tab)4)When you are done, simply apply all your changes.5)You will have all your icons changed!***6) [This step is optional but may be useful to you]Now that you want a vista look to your icons, I think that you may also want the system tray icons to be changed as well...For this you need to use ResHack or ResEdit which is a very complicated process...But our friend has DopeySneezy from deviantart has done this very easy for us. Now you don't need to use ResHack or ResEdit at all! Simply download the system tray icons from http://dopeysneezy.deviantart.com/art/Windows-7-System-Tray-for-XP-115205461 . Now you will say these are win7 icons and not win vista...But they are almost the same as vista! Also they are better looking as well. Click yes...(but I do reccomend that you take a backup of those first and then replace them.Thats it! Restart your system and enjoy the vista eye candy on xp!!****7) [Another optional step but you will enjoy it as it gives xp almost the same look as vista. You will not be able to differentiate between them anymore] Download Vistart and Viorb from http://lee-soft.com/ and run them. You will observe their system tray icons in the left of your taskbar in the system tray. Right click the vistart icon in sys tray and then go to options. Check the start with windows options and then click ok. Do the same with viorb...You will not see viorb icon in system tray, right click the orb instead and then click start with windows.
