My New Boss

Recommended Posts

Ok, so I just got a job as a general maintenance person in a laser cutting/machining shop. First day, I painted all day and was told I would basically be a janitor. Today, my second day, my boss asked for a bit of help taking apart a machine. I stand there for an hour while he fiddles around inside of it before he comes out swearing and cursing that he will have to cut the bolts because he cannot find where to put a wrench. I think wow, my boss is the head of the maintenance department, and can't figure out how to take out a few bolts. So I say are you sure you will have to cut 'em? At which point he tells me "If you are so smart why don't you do it yourself?" Needless to say, I had all four of his problematic bolts out in 5 minutes, 8 tops. So my boss must have decided then that I was worth at least my weight in gold around there, as no one seems to know much of anything about machines. Turns out he was the maintenance guy at a bank before he signed up for this gig. Later on today he asks me, "So, you know how to weld hmm?", to which I reply "Yeah, I go to school for that". So he tells me great, we need a welder around here, we have a welding machine and stuff. Again I think, wow how can this guy be maintenance and not now how to weld? Especially in a machine shop! Well, it gets better. I asked him what kind of a welder it was, and he told me Lincoln, which is just a brand of welder. Wow I think again, maybe I should get more specific. I ask whether it is MIG, TIG, or ARC, as those are the main 3 types of welding, and he says "I dunno, it's got a tank of gas on the side of it though." It turns out that it's a MIG welder, and it also turns out that my boss is a complete moron, and mostly all he does is change lightbulbs. So, I have decided I'll stick it out here, because at the rate I'm moving, I might just take his job.

Nice story man I always love hearing about these kinds of stories. I'm amazed at how many people hold positions where they are not even near qualified for when theres qualified people out there with no jobs because its taken up by unqualified people. Stick it out maybe you will ended up with his job eventually.

You seem to have found yourself a 'niche'. Good catch.Continue to be productive, and continue to show your 'worth' to the Company and, indeed, you just might get his job.I also need to express my opinion on the Manager, though. Chances are that he is very good at his job. He is responsible for getting things done, on-time, and on budget. Not really for doing things himself. Chances are that he does have 'people' skills, instead of 'hands-on the tools' skills. A real asset in a Manager.

That is hilarious... I imagine he completely bluffed his way into that job.... I imagine he lied quite a bit during his interview... its pretty bad when the people under you are better at your job than you.

That's great! Well, I wouldn't worry too much about your moron boss. It just means that you're gonna be more valuable, you have more leverage for getting a raise-like you said, at the rate you're moving you'll probably end up having his job. Plus, at least he isn't a total jerk boss or something (or maybe he is) but, anyway, good luck in your new job, though it doesn't sound like you'll need very much! :o

my boss sunk to a new low today. So I know how to weld, and am pretty good at it at this point, to start with.A machine broke today, actually a steel plate in it cracked. This part apparently costs five thousand dollars to replace. WOW thats alot right? Well for all of maybe ten bucks I could weld it back together (I say ten, since I make nine an hour, and it might cost a dollar for the electricity to weld it, and the wire I would use up)I say hey boss, want my two cents on this? No he says, but I told him anyways, to which he replies I don't think you can weld steel this thick. My certification test is to weld two pieces of one inch steel together, this is three quarter inch. Easy as pie. Oh well, if he wants to spend that five grand, it's no skin off my back.jerk.
