shadowx 0 Report post Posted September 5, 2007 Hi all, currently im looking for a PHP developers job and while searching through job sites etc i noticed several advertising a PHP/JAVA position, the job descriptions often stated that the company has a PHP based website that needs developing etc but also want to migrate it to JAVA.So basically what im asking is, is JAVA taking over from PHP?This isnt good news for me as im a reasonable PHP developer but ive just taken a look at JAVA syntax and because its OO i really dont get along with it. Ive always hated VB and C because they seem to be so complicated compared with PHP.Does anyone know whats happening or is this just a handful of websites migrating? Saint_Michael 3 Report post Posted September 5, 2007 Nah PHP is not dying, because php and java are two different programming languages; Java is application programming and php is server programming. I believe they are looking for people who can develop programs for both languages and then work those programs together. So you can breath a bit easier and sleep soundly that PHP will be here when you wake up tomorrow. shadowx 0 Report post Posted September 5, 2007 Ah i didnt know that Java was just for normal applications, i thought it was used for web applications to act as form processors and stuff like that and as such could replace PHPMaybe i got confused with flash or actionscript or something. When i spent my time downloading the Java development tools it seemed odd that it loaded in the command line rather than a browser, but this might explain it. Saint_Michael 3 Report post Posted September 6, 2007 Correction it is used for both Web applications and regular applications, interestingly enough java and php toughly came out about the same time; java in 95 php 94-95. Although actionscript is has the same syntax as javascript, but that would lead into the difference between Java and JavaScript.
Forbez 0 Report post Posted September 10, 2007 Saint_Michael is correct. Php will not be taken over by java. But there is an increase in the use of javascrpt, which is always good. This brings more dynamic websites. SO don't worry, php will be around for a long time yet.
adriantc 0 Report post Posted September 18, 2007 I don't think PHP is in any real danger, at least in the near future... but other programming languages designed for applications should be. Its just my personal opinion, but I think the future is java's. You'll ask why! Because more and more devices interact/connect/share information/etc. with each other so Java with its virtual machine means it can run on everything making that device much easier to connect with another one that also runs Java. Yeah Java is bad speed-wise, but with all the processing power available that shouldn't be a major issue!
Carson 0 Report post Posted September 18, 2007 I dont think Java will ever take over PHP. While there is an increase in the use of Java, php is much quicker and efficient. Perhaps if there was a new language which combined the two? Javascript is also C-script isnt it? I think that javascript is more flexible, but will not take over php. Yeah Java is bad speed-wise, but with all the processing power available that shouldn't be a major issue! This is a very late post but oh well!In my opinion, PHP will never be replaced, it will only be improved as it now. Java and PHP have their weaknesses, Java is secure and portable but requires some power. PHP on the other hand, is less secure but may be faster and a quick "get away." for simple web applications. I do agree that Java is very powerful and may have the future. However, you're wrong that java will be used for that reason because , it's very relative. With all the processing speed, people, meaning software engineers, will design even more powerful web applications or desktop applications that need the relative processing power at the current time. Also, Sun will be constantly improving the JVM which will increase the power needed to run, which may take up the same percentage of power it does now on current machines. This is why C++ is still around for creating games. No matter how powerful machines become, we still need all the power we can get out of them because software will always be demanding more power.
