There is a topic around here someplace about configuring Outlook for your mail.
Might have to use the search feature.

Microsoft Outlook support GMail, but you have to put options correctly, you have tutorial, in gmail i menu item settings>Forwarding and pop>Configuration instructions

If outlook still doesn't work for you try Mozilla's Thunderbird. It supports extensions like spellcheck, calendar, weather, yada yada.

I use Mozilla Thunderbird and it works like a charm. I recommend it. If you search the net you will get a tutorial on how to configure thunderbird for Gmail.

I think this page covers how to configure: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Using_Gmail_withd_Mozilla_Suite
