Need Free Ftp Client

FileZilla is a good one. FileZilla is a free FTP client for Windows. (Supports FTP, SFTP, and FTPS (FTP over SSL/TLS).
Its pretty straight forward, site manager, message log, file and folder view, and transfer queue.
The site manager allows the user to make and save a list of FTP sites along with their connection data: port number, protocol, and anonymous or normal logon. For normal logon, the username is saved and optionally the password.
The message log is displayed along the top of the window. It displays the console-type output showing the commands sent by FileZilla and the remote server's responses.

I've been using SmartFTP for a long time and I think it's a fantastic FTP program. One of the best out there, free or paid. It's very easy to use and has a lot of features. It will probably have more than you need for basic FTP functions. The url is https://www.smartftp.com/

Among all, I'd prefer SmartFTP because it is able to autologin to our webhost without keying in your password again. Simply opening SmartFTP and you will land up in your webhost directory and your administration of your own webhost gets started. It's so convenient using SmartFTP as it is also fast and easy. It took me 10 minutes to understand how it basically works.I think it's the best FTP client programs among all the rest. It's free to use actually. That's the best part.

I personaly use FireFTP, it loads as a tab in Firefox and I find it has all the features I require, or atlease want anyway.

Really easy to use, good clear documentation, open source, continually being developed, plenty of features etc.

 

I used to use Cute ftp in a previous job a few years ago when it was freeware so when I recently decided to make a website for myself I was shocked to find that they had starting charging $40, or $60 if you want free upgrades for a year (plus you get support, but who needs support for a program that you are just using at home?).

 

I am really glad that there is so much good free software available these days, you only have to look to find it, I don't know why, but I hate paying for software.

Personaly, i would choose the WS-FTP pro 2006 because it is the best, no doubt about it, but flash fxp has many awesome functions, like for example, it uses hacking techniques to enter in ftp servers better then all the others, just for you to know, some ftp servers are only reachable with flash fxp because of the forcing techniques that it uses.

I used to use WS-FTP when they had a free home version. That was pretty good - now days you can only get 30day trials I believe. SmartFTP is probably the best alternative.

Yep, I agree with a few of the posts that recommend smartftp. It's a fantastic ftp browser I've been using for a couple of years now. It's easy to use is realiable and performs all the tasks you'd want to do on an ftp browser.I've tried cuteftp before, but found this quite complicated (may just be me) so I uninstalled it and that was when I went over to smartftp.There are bound to be other freeware ftp clients to download that are as good or if not better than smartftp. You could try a google search, but I can't recommend any as I've only used cuteftp and smartftp.Hope this helps :-)

FireFTP is a good tool for Firefox users, but it is not reccomended as it is still in Beta Testing (with an official 1.0 version still to be announced), and is VERY unreliable. I tried it recently to try to access two different FTP accounts I own, one for my site here and one somewhere else.
FireFTP allowed access into the Xisto FTP Server (after the initial warning that the server may not be secure because it is licenced to gamma.xisto.com and not Xisto.com, which I know is on purpose), but did not allow access to anything. As for the other site, I was allowed to see a list of folders but could not view the contents of them, and despite the fact that it had recognised a subfolder was existant in one of the folders, was disregarding it whenever the folder it existed in was opened.

In sum, DO NOT use FireFTP!!!

Oh yeah, I just tried out the SmartFTP installation File and found something alarming. Even though the software makes out that it is free and that Download.com even lists it as having "No Limitations", I read the Terms and Conditions and discovered that the program is unregistered and...

...is subject to a 30-day Evaluation Period, after which a licence must be obtained from smartFTP.com. ... After doing this, a licence key will be obtained that will allow continued use.

Free software? Yeah right! Has anyone installed this software and been able to use it despite this apparent caveat?

The 30 day trial applies only to commercial use. After 30 days launching the program usually causes a nagware popup to display from 9am-5pm weekdays, but you just click "ok" to close it. I've been using SmartFTP for over four years now, without ever paying for it -- although I suppose I should send some money their way sometime. They also support fxp (direct server to server transfer) which is really pleasant. Pretty much my only qualm with them is that while they support FTPS they don't support SFTP.

Hi!

I'm using LeechFTP. It's a little bit old, but it really works fine and is very simple to use. You can download it at LeechFTP. It provides multiple downloads (not only one as for example FlaxhFXP), which I think is very important for a good ftp program.

Quick Start turorial:

-connect to a ftp: just click on the lightning symbol and enter the login data
-add a bookmark to avoid entering the login data at every login: click on the book sign, choose "edit", "add folder", enter a name for the new folder, the choose "edit" and "add bookmark". Now you can log in to a ftp by simply clicking on the book sign and than double clicking on your bookmark.

On the left, you can choose how many threads (files) should be handled simultanously.

I think this should help to get a quick start with the program.

I think that the majority of the people that use FTP programs tend to go with SmartFTP. But since Xisto gives cpanel with their host I just prefer to use the file manager instead of having to ftp things. I find that aloteasier to do tan anything else. Like also said, Filezilla and CoreFtp are awesome to use if you are going for the whole free aspect. But you can still continue to run SmartFTP even if you do not have a serial number for the program.

I vote for FileZilla too. It's very simple and easy to use. And best of all, it's free and open-source software. You get the source too.
I've been using it since always on my windows box. It never crashed or something like that, and it is just getting better and better.
