True2Earn 0 Report post Posted April 27, 2006 I am wondering if Xisto.com (free web hosting, no ads) supports mod_rewrite and htaccess or are these features disabled. I have tried many different hosting services and so far I've found none that support it. These two features are very valuable when one wants to have a web presense and have an SEO site. Additionally, it would enable one to earn enough cash to be able to purchase hosting. Sometimes I wonder if it's possible for "low-income" people to even earn a little residual income. LoL. I hope someone can shed a little light on whether these features are available or not. If not, do you know of any free hosting that does provide them? Albus Dumbledore 0 Report post Posted April 27, 2006 i am not sure about the hosting of mod_rewrite and htaccess, but i do know that from Xisto.com you are not capable of buying hosting from this site.. not even additional bandwidth, but another website (which is run by the same person who is offering the completley free Xisto hosting) offers webhosting pretty cheap, the exact price for the lowest one i see on there would be 3.33/Mo. for 33.3 GB of bandwidth, but i do see the Micro plan on there which is 3.33/YR but you only get 100MB of bandwidth. the Xisto - Web Hosting website cam be found Here
jlhaslip 4 Report post Posted April 27, 2006 .htaccess is fully supported and available.I believe mod_rewrite is also available as a standard feature requiring no additional permissions or set-up. I'll do a phpinfo and check it out. If it is disabled, I will post back here, but I'm certain it is allowed. Loaded Modules = mod_fastcgi, mod_auth_passthrough, mod_log_bytes, mod_bwlimited, mod_php4, mod_frontpage, mod_ssl, mod_setenvif, mod_so, mod_expires, mod_auth, mod_access, {{{mod_rewrite,}}} mod_alias, mod_userdir, mod_actions, mod_imap, mod_asis, mod_cgi, mod_dir, mod_autoindex, mod_include, mod_status, mod_negotiation, mod_mime, mod_log_config, mod_env, http_core
True2Earn 0 Report post Posted April 28, 2006 Ok, so far what I've read is cheering me up. Let's see if I have this correct. With the free, no ads, hosting I can create a file named .htaccess with the following:RewriteEngine onOptions +FollowSymlinksRewriteBase /RewriteRule ^\.htaccess$ - [F]and I would not get a 500 error, it'll work and I can get rid of URL's such as hxx domain.com/subdirectory/index.php of garbage here>&x=<more gargage>$etc ???That sounds like a pretty good deal. Also, I checked out http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ and nearly dropped a load in my pants. Are these features with all the plans? And the prices? I don't think I've ever seen hosting this affordable and feature packed in a long, long time. It looks like I may have to go with free hosting with Xisto until I earn enough $$$ to afford hosting with Xisto - Web Hosting. I think I may even have to give free advertising to the company and promote something this good!
Hamtaro 0 Report post Posted April 28, 2006 I actually know for a fact that mod_rewrite is enabled for the free hosting, because WordPress uses it for permalinks, and I had a WordPress blog for a while. In the .htaccess file, were many RewriteRules! I don't really know exactly what all used with it would work (I guess everything would), as I don't know much about that particular module. Also, Xisto has many more features that most others do not have.
jlhaslip 4 Report post Posted April 28, 2006 I think I may even have to give free advertising to the company and promote something this good! It is a tough decision isn't it. Whether to tell anyone else about this great service or to keep it a secret for ourselves... I tell others and then the Owner will expand the service and we all benefit.
