Classical Or Contemporary Guitar? What do you prefer?

Recommended Posts

I used to play the guitar contemporary style a few years ago using the thumb and index finger to strum. Just recently I took up classical guitar lessons and I found it really cool because I've been able to play a lot of contemporary songs, such as the Acoustic version of Pardon me, stellar and other contemporary songs with lots of plucking in them, that I couldn't play before using the the thumb and index techniques. And I find a lot of spanish ballads and other pieces with excellent mellodies -- Forbidden Games, Sunburst, Leyenda, Alahambra. I prefer classical over contemporary style thumb and index finger way of playing because there are a lot of techniques that will help you develop your guitar playing skills.

Why do I have to choose between the two? It's like me deciding between classical and electric guitar. In fact I love them both quite a lot and I can use a lot of what I use on classical on the electric also. I think to be a real classical guitar player you have to follow somepretty strict rules, ie fingernails, position, etc.. These rules are not present in contemporary guitar which maybe seems more attractive to some for this reason.
