iGuest 3 Report post Posted January 7, 2005 a good example that linux is the best, NASA uses linux! FlightLinux to be exact Developer: NASA Advanced Information System TechnologyWebsite: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/Languages: EnglishCategories: EmbeddedPlatforms: OtherDescription: FlightLinux is a concept that uses a real-time variation of the open source Linux Operating System for onboard spacecraft use. The open source Linux concept, with a modified real-time, embeddable kernel, will address the unique problems of spacecraft onboardcomputers better. would NASA trust microsoft to make a good OS... iGuest 3 Report post Posted January 16, 2005 I run XP with no probs, but I like the response, performance, and software availible for Linux. I find myself looking for Windows ports of that software all the time, wishing I could get away with pure linux. LOL. I recommend Linux unless your a multimedia nut, cause Microsoft has a monopoly on Audio/Video compression on the web. (WMA/WMV)
iGuest 3 Report post Posted January 16, 2005 what specific features are better in linux - other than 'security'? I've never really used it - why should i switch.
iGuest 3 Report post Posted January 16, 2005 He is asking what to use,not wad u all are running.Linux is a little more powerful and has a GUI,X Windows. It's not exactly safe, but because most virus attacks are targeted at Windows,Linux is seen as safe. There are not much programs for linux....But on the plus side, you can run something like Windows for free!Use Centos with it's built in X Windows system...But u wouldn't be able to run most windows programsyou can always use OpenBSD i believe... supposedly it's very secure. i wouldn't know. iGuest 3 Report post Posted January 17, 2005 Deadly blue screens? Kernel Panic? As far as i know it, all OS have problems. Linux is well known for it stability and security features, on the other hand window is a fully functional, very user friendly operating system, both comes in many flavours, choose the one you like. But if you are a heavy windows user you will find that you have many problems with it. If you work in datacentres you will always need to patch the windows update now and then. Majour jobs will be all done in the night, else administrator for linux can stay at home and relax while those windows admintrator do the patching. There's always a price when things are too good... Virus, Spyware and many adwares targets windows users, when the time you get to know it.... *BLEEP* already happend.....haha!
