Hi friends, I am an active on-line worker for more than five years to have a moderate home based earning. I grew up learning things and finally realized that the potential I have to earn from my work is much more than that of a number of sites which paid me for the same works in my earlier days. I shifted my focus from working for others to working for myself. Because, my own site will help me earn for lifetime for the labour I had put up in comparison to that of one time earnings I received from my valued works for other sites. But, I want help and suggestions from my friends whom I consider much knowledgeable then myself, so as to up-lift my web site in the form of a blog to the next level. I am really poor to understand web designing, web tools, SEO, etc. A lot of things pass above my head and I just keep scratching my skull all the time to understand the IT Jargon. I can afford to buy web space but, just for my lack of knowledge in proper utilization of the facilities available, I am not opting so far. I want to build a website where I can categorize and sub-categorize my works so that one can assist everything inside my site by way of tab clicking, just as we do in case of Microsoft Excel worksheets. I have the contents with me scattered over this online world and want to gather them systematically under single banner and continue to add to them newer things. Please suggest me how shall I approach. Whether, Microsoft Excel could be uploaded to blogs to avail the facilities we get offline? Thank you in advance for your support.

Starting from Moodle 2 the task of installing your own Moodle on free shared hosts is becoming kind of difficult compared to the good old Moodle 1.9. The PHP version and Unicode are the most critical requirements that are not available in most free hosting services. Even if you try their script installer if it has Moodle, you end up with either a blank white page or a writing permission error that you can’t resolve. Ideally you will be ok with a PHP 5.3.2 and a MySql 5 with Unicode collation but that seems to a very difficult thing to get from a free host plan. Some providers give you a link to their cPanel demo where you can find out which PHP version they’re using. The rest don’t say anything about it and you have to register an account then login to the cPanel to find out that they don’t have what you’re looking for. You end up with many accounts that you don’t know what’s good for what. Even if they give you the possibility to select a PHP 5.4 that still doesn’t work because of the maximum execution time limit of 30 seconds or because of the lack of some critical PHP extensions. I’m not going to write any detailed information about that because I already wasted a lot of time on that. After trying out about ten different free hosting services I came across Freehostia (www.freehostia.com/) which offers limited disk storage of 250 MB but with a customizable PHP ini and a selection of a higher version of PHP. Their script installer is able to fix the problem of the Moodle data directory which needs to be outside the web root with some hack in the Moodle config.php and eventually install a working Moodle version 2.1 on your web site. But does that solve the problem? No, because after installing Moodle you’re left with about 130 MB which is not enough to host a decent Moodle course with the required course files and users’ uploads. Also changing the theme doesn’t take effect at all. The end result? I gave up looking around for any freer hosting but still have some hopes in hosting here. Can anyone share their experience in installing Moodle 2.+ on the hosting service that this forum offers?

Hello,Offtopic: As this is my first post after a long time (I've gone offline a few years) I have to say I'm suprised to see that what was once Xisto has changed so much while keeping some of the good old stuff. One last thing... It sure is good to be back!Ontopic: All this time I have been busy developing some open-source software in my free time. They are hosted on Sourceforge, but the webupdate feature my software has a requirement that Sourceforge cannot provide. My software downloads the install package by a direct file transfer while Sourceforge does a redirect (to choose a mirror from the multitude Sourceforge has). One thing I really like about Sourceforge is their traffic analyzer so I would really like to see what impact the updates have. To be more precise I want to see how many downloads my softwares have (that is update downloads). Since the redirect feature kills my updates I need to host my file on my own website (hence my return to the online world). I have just registered for hosting and a domain. What I would like to ask you is what is the best way to get statistics for file downloads considering I need direct download. For my the best option would be something built in cPanel so I don't need to install 3rd party applications. I don't need anything very fancy, just total downloads, maybe some statistics with the country the downloads come from - basic stuff. So what do you think? Thanks,Adrian
