  1. Hmm so the myCENT system is out of beta according to OpaQue and not, according to anwiii. While the new system may not be totally perfect yet, it is at least doing its job once a day and is spreading the wondrous reward of myCENTs all over the forum! Except for those members whose e-mail change caused their updates to stall, the rest of the members seem to be getting their updates pretty regularly. Of course there are a few who aren't satisfied with the amount they're getting, but it's still something which is better than nothing at all. If I have to wait for some more time for the system to reach a state where everyone will call it as "stable", then I'm prepared to wait, as long as it doesn't stop functioning altogether.

    @anwiii: <insert smiley here!>

  2. For durability nothing beats Nokia. If you want to own a phone that you don't want to change for a long time then Nokia will do just fine. But if you don't mind changing phones after a while then by all means go for Sony Ericsson! It's got great music player capabilities and designs. SE's slider models aren't so great though. Most of them end up failing badly. The other models perform well enough, or at least satisfactorily!

  3. Are you guys still looking for new logo designs? I have a few ideas if you are. Just curious :)

Sure you could display your idea(s) for the rest of the community to see. But as anwiii said earlier, there's no guarantee that Opaque will pick it as the new logo. You could still try though. If it's very good then there's no reason why it shouldn't be selected as the new logo :)

  4. ok.... you know what wd- just wait for your test results to see how good your english is. if you pass it, you know your english is up to par. if you don't pass it, well, then you can come back here and post about how your english sucks :)

I'm sure she'll pass - it's not too hard IMO. I've seen a lot of people feeling nervous before the exam but they always tell me later that it was nothing too big at all. Just takes a little effort to finish it.

  5. Depends on how much part is static. Parts like sidebar, footer and navigation remains static for almost any site. But if you just added feed to static page then it will serve no different than those static pages which are manually updated. Search engines rarely considers those pages as dynamic. More updated content(full posts or full feeds) in dynamic sites is what crawlers are looking for. Even short feed is not sufficient because that way crawlers can find out lesser updates of page.
If you want readers for your blog then getting static page is worst thing you can do-from both SEO and user point of view. But for portfolio and occasionally updated blog it's enough to keep feed and your folio on front page. But in later case don't expect search engine traffic and reader involvement to your site.

Now that's a scary thing, and I don't know about web_designer (who started this thread!) but I'm now certainly in a fix whether to concentrate on maintaining the look and quality of my site or focus on SEO rankings :P It's not like I want my site to be super-popular, so I guess I'll continue with the static home page for now and when the site's ready I'll put a link in my sig here and that should manage to grab a few eyeballs ;)

  6. well simpleton, not yet. i finished studying for the exam. i have two books, and they helped me a lot. i finished them three months ago, and i think i am ready for the exam but i have a reason not to take it now, so i am delaying things to the last moment :). now i keep on learning new vocabularies that may help me in topics. and when i take the exam i will make sure to tell you guys. thank you all for your responses.

Is TOEFL one of those exams where you get to decide the date? That's a very convenient system :) Anyway, here's wishing you all the best for when you take the exam! Give it your best :D

  7. Have you tried forex and stock market yourself ? Or you got this from some place as usual ? Forex is not an incredible opportunity, especially for newbies. It has more risk than any other business. Chances of losing money on forex and stock market is more than any thing else you mentioned. Why i always find grammar of your article at the start and the end is different, hmm. ;)

Forex and stock marketing have always been risky and this is what made them popular in the first place. I don't know much about those things but I do know a dialogue which is used often for describing this situation: if you know to make the right moves at the right time, then forex and stock marketing will reward you richly. It all depends on how much time you take to learn those moves!

  8. As said earlier, uninstall applications. Plus stop using facebook connect as way to connect or login to some sites. There is flaw with that as well these days. If applications are removed and still you're facing issues with the facebook then i suggest you to avoid visiting some group pages or profiles where there is apps running with weird JS.

I agree - using Facebook to link with other sites can be really risky if the site is not trustable. I would suggest logging out of facebook after every use so that even if we visit another site with facebook apps, they won't link to us automatically.

  9. That's exactly how the power of "critical" goes down, everybody is going to create a ticket and put it on "critical", for example if there are 3 critical and 1 urgent, im sure that the 1 urgent will be taken care of BEFORE all the criticals, if the urgent is older than the critical ticket. But I prefer to just try to figure out what my problem's urgency and this is one of the most complained problems, so i think urgent will be the correct one.

Really? I've never had a problem with the "Critical" status, and the longest time I had to wait for a reply was around 30 hours, which is sensible enough. I think I never opened a ticket when there were a lot of tickets being opened (like when the myCENTs were down) so I didn't have to wait for long anytime.

@Shahrukh: I understand that you're worried over the delay but just wait for a while for the support staff to reply to your ticket (that is, if you have already opened one) I'm sure you'll get your domain very soon.

  10. I think its about time we changed the FREAKING logo! Just pick one and just upload the logo. jeez... who long is it going to take to just upload a simple logo? 30 seconds? Or just use WD's code to create the banner rotating thing... I'm getting bored of this logo... I think its about time we change it... :(

Wow you must be looking at that logo daily if you're bored of it already! I hardly look at it anymore and unless someone mentions it like this I don't even remember that it's there! Hmm but I guess the new members will take notice of the logo so yeah, it might be better to change it.

  11. Good job getting rid of it soon. But have you made sure that it hasn't infected any of your other files? Once I had a similar worm which disabled my internet connection. I was able to get rid of it and just to be safe I re-formatted my XP installation. But when I scanned with an AV Program, it detected over 1000 infections! The original worm was deleted but it left behind so many infections running silently :( So use a good anti-virus program to run a complete system scan and make sure there aren't any traces of the virus left.

  12. And thats EXACTLY what they get at a OpenCMS Convention as a Project by Joomla, Wordpress, PHPNuke and everyother major CMS/Blog system developers. They were to told to create a website with a given niche and they were given a week. After a week, when they compared everything, Joomla's Website was able to handle the best designer and had more modifications and cool things than Wordpress or any other. Joomla can be modified into ANYTHING, thats why its the most powerful and it has even won awards for it, the only kinds of awards the Wordpress is FAMOUS for is the set up time and simplicity.
I personally like WordPress for the above reasons, for people like me, Joomla is only good when you order a theme or buy it, other than that -- making your own Theme is too complicated. That's why i prefer to stick with WordPress, for NOW :)

I'll agree with you about good Joomla templates being hard to find. Unless you get a premium template, there are very few free ones that are very appealing and offer a lot of modifications. In this case Wordpress wins, as it's got a lot of good-looking themes for free. But trying to bring a Wordpress site out of the "blog" look could take some time.

I remember when I first heard about a CMS, the only name everyone was talking about was actually PHPNuke, but nowadays it's all about Joomla!

  13. I haven't used a Mac till now but whenever I see the config of those computers I always wonder how people manage to keep those things up-to-date. But consider this - there are only a small chunk of loyal Mac fans and they spend a lot of money to buy these machines. So at least some of them might be people with lots of $$$ and so upgrading by spending a lot more money doesn't make much difference to them and Apple still gets its profits. The common folk who can't afford to upgrade too often just have to wait until they're ready to spend more to get more :(

  14. Another small word about Gmail - if you're the kind of person who uses Google a lot, make sure that you're signed out of Gmail while accessing Google.com, because if you're signed in, Google will keep a copy of all your searches. It's nothing dangerous, but it's like giving away your personal info to Google! So just look at the top-right of the window in Google.com to check that you're not signed into Gmail.

  15. That was a good article fermin25; it will definitely help those who seek out quick ways to make money off the net. But I'm surprised that you left out hosting/serving ads through Adsense and similar programs. It's a sure way of making money as long as you don't abuse it by clicking on your ads or try to get around it somehow. The only downside to this is that you need to have a popular site with a steady flow of traffic. So it's a slow process but it's an assured way of making money.

  16. Here I am a level 3 poster with 40 some odd posts and I haven't seen myCents yet. I imagine it will come along eventually. I have so many ideas I want to get off the ground. So hopefully, they will come. In the meantime I will keep posting like a made fiend. Well maybe not a mad one, more like a slightly irritated fiend.

One thing we all noticed from the myCENT script is that even if it is late, it doesn't miss a single post you make. So even if it's getting updated late for you, don't let that stop you from making more posts, because when the update comes all of those posts will be taken into account and you'll probably end up with a large amount of myCENTs :) So keep posting!

  17. @Simpleton, yeah I saw that I could get into my old account. But isn't again forum rules to use 2 accounts for hopes of getting more MyCents? I would hate to break a rule on my return, ya know?
Besides Zanzibarjones sounds so much coooooooler!

Lol yeah this one sounds much better; only downside is that you need to start form the beginning again in terms of post count. And if your myCENT problem is solved then you can enjoy this account completely :)

  18. Don't make your front page static- because that way it'll be hard for search engines to see if your page is new and updated. Search engines only care for text content as update not flash or images. I suggest you to check out some portfolios on smashing magazine or devlounge so that you can see how other designers are blending the front page with content and the folio or graphic.
I have seen many sites that do have static page with blog feed for readers to read and the graphic to keep readers busy in navigation or in folio. Check how other designers are doing this effectively, copy them and from there you can add what you want. Variation will always be there even if you imitate them .

If you add a homepage when search engines are already indexing your site, this will mean reduce traffic since search engines will think that the pages they are following was lost. this can be avoided however by putting all the keywords that was used before in searching your site at the homepage's meta and making sure that a sitemap is submitted or available to the search engine.
You have only added a single page but search engines will think it was a new website which they must crawl again. :D
Do not use static homepage, be sure to feed somewhere on that page all the new contents that you have posted and links to an archive type content history like wordpress do on its archive. You need this dynamic insertion of new contents and archive and possibly also dynamic titles to make sure that search bots can travel to this links.

So if a small part of the static page is dynamic, i.e. with updates from the site, would that be enough to please the search engines or do we have to remove the static home page altogether?

  19. I think it's a good idea to remove all applications from your main account and use it only for networking, while you can try out all sorts of crazy apps with your other account It's up to you in the end, but in this way you can relieve yourself of this sort of worries.

    totally agree

and as a program creator with facebook apps.. i can see the whole profile of anyone who visits my application and this application in question is not hosted on facebook but on http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ which is my site.

here are the things that i can see which surely is also available to spamming/viral programs on Facebook.

    1. full name

    2. birthday

    3. marital status

    4. join date

    5. school

    6. address

    7. friends (sometimes they don't work and you can't write on their walls unless they also visit your application page)

    8. email (sometimes it work and sometimes it does not, no idea if this is standard or just a bug)

and last, userid which identify you on facebook and was also used to get items 1-8 and have this format 100000025xxxxxx. basically it was your database ID and signifies how many registered before you do which is on my example says at least 25million registered before me.

and I can write on your wall using this info without you knowing it. which of course on viral/spamming softwares on Facebook will contain links and text or even images that will trick your friends to visit the same application page. this is possible since facebook uses a combination of cookie and session to maintain cross site login.

Wow thanks for letting us know about that vhortex - I always wondered what sort of info the app developer had access to. What you said has only strengthened my resolve not to let any app come near my main networking account, while I can use as many apps I like on my gaming account! :P

Oh, and I see that you quoted my words from the previous words but didn't use the quote tags. If you can still edit this post please do so before a mod notices ;)

  20. I certainly will. Thanks for keeping me updated of what's happening. I take it Opaque is a board moderator/admin?I just don't want to seem greedy, ya know? But the reason i came here and posted was FOR the benefits they offer, ya know?

And where might I find this 'Opaque' person? I searched the users but no luck....

Opaque's profile can be found here and yeah he's the admin who created the myCENT script so he'll find out the problem. In the meantime, have you tried posting with your old account? It's still active, right? Maybe you could get the myCENTs through that account faster. It's worth a try...

  21. Wordpress works best for people who don't like to spend too much time over learning how to handle the CMS. Joomla and the likes have got a huge learning curve and this makes them an unattractive option for some. Wordpress is simple but some people underestimate it to be too simple. With the proper modifications, Wordpress, Joomla, PhpNuke can produce almost identical sites, but of course that depends on how they are used.
