  1. Hi -I just wanted to post something here to introduce myself.I do paid work as a freelancer (translator from various languages to English, database programmer, graphic designer), as well as unpaid work as a hobbyist (using executable specification languages such as Maude, and also high-performance vector-based or column-oriented database languages). I think it's finally time for me to set up an on-line presence for myself, and I figure I need the flexibility of a CMS rather than just a blog. After researching several CMSs I'm really excited about Drupal because of its built-in support for internationalization and localization (I'd like to do it as a multi-language website: initially in English, Spanish, and Portuguese which are my strongest languages - and later possibly also in French, German and Russian which I also speak) and because of its custom-database and social-networking capabilities. I've also been researching lots of free web hosting providers and I'm pretty impressed with Xisto - the staff seems well-informed and the community is very active, and the web hosting features and uptime look very good. Thanks for offering this service and I hope to hang around for a while.
  2. Thanks you for the detailed reply, Saint_Michael. I am still unclear on two points: (1) What are the correct name servers I should be pointing my domain to? (2) How do I complete the process now and sign up for cPanel access to my site? (1) What are the correct name servers I should be pointing my domain to? Is there a typo here? This conflicts with the "Important Nameserver Updates" referenced below: http://forums.xisto.com/topic/55193-important-nameserver-update/ https://support.xisto.com/index.php?_m=ns&newsid=10 which state that the new nameservers are: ns.computinghost.com (without the "1") ns2.computinghost.com Finally, both of the above sets of nameservers also conflict with a third set of nameservers referenced on the (possibly outdated and/or deprecated?) Xisto.com/manage page: https://support.xisto.com/# where it says: "If you have a Domain, Enter in the format "abc.com" or "abc.net". YOU MUST POINT YOUR DOMAIN NAMESERVERS to NS1.TRAP17.COM and NS2.TRAP17.COM ( your domain will not work until it is propagated )" In summary, there's three different conflicting sets of name servers referenced in various places on Xisto and xisto: (1) NS1.computinghost.com NS2.computinghost.com per Saint_Michel's post here (2) ns.computinghost.com (without the "1") ns2.computinghost.com per the recent Important Nameserver Update (3) NS1.TRAP17.COM NS2.TRAP17.COM per Xisto.com/manage (2) How do I complete the process now and sign up for cPanel access to my site? B-- No your application will be approve through the billing system from now on. ... D-E-- You want to register and create your hosting package through the billing website at Xisto - Support.com After my application was approved through the billing system, I ordered a Logic Plan hosting package through the billing website at Xisto - Support.com, and I applied the $2.00 I had in MyCents to the $1.99 Invoice. My Product Details when I'm logged in at: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ reads as follows: Registration Date: 2008/11/14 Product/Service: Linux Regular Hosting - Logic Plan Domain: net247.co.cc DISK SPACE: 1000 MB BANDWIDTH (Transfer Limit per Month): 10000MB E-Mail Soln. (Yearly Only): Free Google Mail (10x 7GB Mail) (Domain Required*) Web Builder/ CMS/ Gallery Pre-Setup.: none MySQL Databases: 1 SHELL ACCESS: No Addon Domains: 1 Parked Domains: 5 Dedicated IP: No Subdomains: 5 Setup Custom Nameserver: No FTP Accounts: 1 JSP - Java Server Pages - Support: No Frontpage Extension: No Payment Method: MyCENT First Payment Amount: $1.99 USD Recurring Amount: $1.99 USD Next Due Date: 2008/12/14 Billing Cycle: Monthly Status: Pending Then I went to Xisto.com/manage to create 8-character-max cPanel login and a password for my site and got the following error message: "You are suppposed to get approved for Hosting by ADMINISTRATORs." And my Invoices when I'm logged in at: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ read as follows: Invoice # Invoice Date Due Date Total Status 10148 2008/11/14 2008/11/19 $0.00 USD Paid View Invoice 10089 2008/11/11 2008/11/16 $1.99 USD Cancelled View Invoice (Note: Invoice 10089 had been Cancelled because I was previously thinking of switching to a different hosting provider, and then I recreated the exact same Order as Invoice 10148, which has now been Paid using the MyCents from the Cancelled Invoice). I'm confused becase apparently my application has been approved through the billing system, and I've ordered the Logic Plan package at Xisto and paid for the invoice at Xisto using MyCents - and as Saint_Michael has stated here, my "application will be approved through the billing system from now on". Earlier today I pointed my domain to the name servers: ns.computinghost.com (without the "1") ns2.computinghost.com (I was going with the second of the three conflicting sets of nameservers above - assuming that Saint_Michael just made a typo here, and that the nameservers specified at Xisto.com/manage haven't been corrected yet.) But now that I got the error message "You are suppposed to get approved for Hosting by ADMINISTRATORs" I've pointed my nameservers back to my previous free web hosting provider. So my two questions now are: (1) If applications are now approved through the billing system and I've successfully ordered a Logic Package and paid for the Invoice using MyCents at xisto, then why do I get an error message saying I still need approval? Should I be setting up my site name and cPanel login / password through Xisto.com/manage - or somewhere else (say at xisto.com or at Xisto - Web Hosting.com)? (2) What is the correct set of nameservers I should be pointing my domain to? I'm sure this will all seem very straightforward once somebody points me in the right direction. I've been evaluating a lot of free web hosting providers and Xisto seems like it's one of the best because of the informed staff and active community and solid infrastructure, so I'm very eager to get started! Thanks.
  3. I heard about BRAT from a friend of mine from a nurse. This is a good diet for people who are experiencing diarrhea. It is very important to rehydrate during diarrhea, and to get enough mineral salts (which is why foods high in potassium are good).
  4. Actually now I have 52.96 credits on the Xisto forums - how much is this worth in MyCents? Should I just wait a few hours and keep checking my email to see if more MyCents get transferred from Xisto to xisto?
  5. Hi -I joined Xisto and made some posts, and my credits were over 30, so I decided to sign up for a Package 2 hosting plan. Then I filled out the form for the Free Hosting Application request, and then I followed the instructions in the reply that later appeared underneath, telling me to sign up at xisto using the same email I used at Xisto, using the Logic Plan (which costs 1.99 USD a month).Very quickly I received 1.00 USD in credits to my xisto billing. My question is: Under the old system (using "credits" from Xisto forum posts after getting one's application approved by a moderator), being over 30 points was enough to sign up for a Package 2 hosting plan. Now under the new system (using "MyCents" transferred from Xisto to xisto), having over 30 credits apparently resulted in 1.00 USD being transferred from Xisto forums to xisto billing. But that's not enough to pay for the first month of hosting on xisto - which costs 1.99 USD.So under the old system, it seems that 30 credits were enough to get started and pay for a month of Package 2 hosting. Now under the new system, having over 30 credits results in 1.00 USD being transferred from Xisto to xisto - but that's not enough to get started and pay for the first month, which costs 1.99 USD. (I have an outstanding balance at xisto billing of 0.99 USD still.)Is this the way the new system is supposed to work? Should I simply continue posting on the forums to get more credits/MyCents and they'll eventually be transferred to xisto billing where I can apply them to my invoice?I want to make sure I pay off the Invoice using MyCents by tomorrow - because the free (sub-)domain name I registered is only reserved for the first 48 hours. I have to complete the setup for the free (sub-)domain name (at co.cc) within 48 hours of requesting it (I requested it Nov 11, 2008 at co.cc), or they'll cancel it. So I want to make sure I pay my xisto invoice by tomorrow (Nov 12, 2008) so that the new free (sub-)domain won't get cancelled.
  6. OK, I just looked here: http://forums.xisto.com/topic/61592-credit-system-v30-online-resolved-free-web-hosting-domains-dedicated-ip-digital-certificate-managed/ and it looks like the system of transferring MyCents from Xisto forums to xisto billing is new as of October 2008 - so maybe this means the procedures described here: https://support.xisto.com/ are no apparently longer valid. I'm still unsure about how to set up "Zone Records" and "URL Forwarding" (which are mentioned in the Setup at co.cc) - or maybe I don't need to do this at all. I did hear that Zone Records can be used so that a user can just type examplesite.com rather than http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ - is that the main thing they're used for? And should I be setting up my co.cc domain at co.cc or is it better to set it up at Xisto.com?
  7. Hi - This is the first time that I'm trying to register a (free) domain name (at co.cc) and get (free) web hosting (at trip.com) and I have some questions to make sure I'm doing everything right. I'm still a bit confused about how Xisto, xisto and (in my case) co.cc interact. This is what I've done so far. (1) I registered the new (sub-)domain "net247.co.cc" at co.cc, which offers (some, not all) (sub-)domain names for free. They sent me a message saying I have 48 hours to perform the setup for this domain. There are three Setup options at co.cc: "Manage DNS" where it asks for two or more name servers; "Zone Records" where you can create "A", "MX", "CNAME" and "NS" type records, and "URL Forwarding". For the moment, I didn't do any of these - I figured I'd first apply for the free hosting at Xisto, and once that was done, I'd come back and do the Setup at co.cc. (2) I made a few posts in the forums here at Xisto (which I hope people found interesting), and eventually I had over 30 points. (3) I filled out a Free Web Hosting Application. My request now appears here: http://forums.xisto.com/topic/62345-free-web-hosting-application-updated-by-stefanscottalexx/ (4) Later a reply (I'm not sure if this is also an "approval") was added underneath my request, and it said I should go here: https://support.xisto.com/ to sign up at xisto (using the same id I used at trip17) to request the Logical Plan, which normally costs USD 1.99 a month, and I should use MyCents as the form of payment, and I should wait about 5 hours for my credits at Xisto to be transferred to xisto. Actually about an hour later I got an email saying that 1.00 had been credited from my Xisto forum posts to my xisto billing, and I applied this to my invoice at xisto - but there's still an outstanding balance of 0.99 USD. Now I'm a bit unsure what I should do next. (a) Should I wait and see if Xisto posts any more credits to my xisto account? Or should I make some more posts in the Xisto forums to get some more credits which could then be transferred to xisto? I initially had over 33 points (after 18 posts), and Xisto credited a dollar to xisto - so maybe if I posted some more on the Xisto forums then there would be more credits to xisto? ( Should I also wait to see if my Free Web Hosting Application request in the Xisto forum gets approved by a moderator? © The instructions for registering my new (sub-)domain at co.cc said that I would have to perform the setup within 48 hours. I'm not sure what, if anything, I should fill in for the second and third options ("Zone Records" and "URL Forwarding"). For the first option, I see here https://support.xisto.com/ https://support.xisto.com/ that I should fill in "ns1.trap17.com" and "ns2.trap17.com" for the Name Servers under the "Manage CNS" setup option at co.cc. There seems to be some overlap between the functionality of https://support.xisto.com/ and the fucntionality of Setup at co.cc - both allow me to designate the name servers for the new domain. I'm not sure if it matters where I designate the name servers - at Xisto or at co.cc. (d) I'm not sure if I should be using https://support.xisto.com/ to create the new account (which involves getting approval?) or if I should be using https://support.xisto.com/ (which involves waiting until credits are transferred from Xisto to xisto). (e) I'm not sure if I need to do anything with the second and third options on co.cc ("Zone Records" and "URL Forwarding". Maybe I've done everything right so far - I understand that it takes time for the forum moderators at Xisto to approve applications, for credits to be transferred from Xisto to xisto, and for DNS changes to propagate through the internet. I would appreciate any feedback or advice as to whether I'm doing things correctly so far - and what I should do next! Thanks.

  17. Hi - Many times when you're designing a website (or planning on painting your home!) it's helpful to have a bunch of color samples or "swatches" which you can mix and match to experiment with different color combinations. There are several websites on-line which allow you to do this. I think my favorite one is Kuler from Adobe (Flash-based): https://color.adobe.com/ Click on the "Create" button and try dragging the knobs around the color wheel to create new color combinations or "palettes". You can also click on "Select A Rule" to change the method used for picking the set of colors in your palette (ie, it changes the way the knobs in the color wheel interact with each other) - using options such as Analagous, Complementary, or Monochromatic. This is a very helpful interactive website which is fun to use and which can help anyone learn more about the art and science of color. - Scott

  19. Hi - I'd like to share some simple basic ideas about nutrition which I've learned and used over the years. Fortunately, good nutrition doesn't have to be complicated. There's just a few simple basic principles to be aware of, and everything else flows from there to keep you healthier and younger looking. Also, you don't have to be a fanatic about nutrition. It can be overwhelming to try to change your whole diet at once. Instead, you'll have more success if you're just aware of what's more versus less healthy, and steer yourself gradually in the right direction as much as possible. (1) Learn which foods are ACID-forming, and which foods are ALKALINE-forming - and try to eat 80% ALKALINE-forming foods. Maintaining an overall alkaline pH in your body is the main way of fighting diseases, many of which flourish in an acidic environment. These two websites provide listings of acid- and alkaline-forming foods: http://www.liferesearchuniversal.com/acid.html http://www.rense.com/1.mpicons/acidalka.htm (2) Try to eat more (ie, 80%) RAW foods (or foods which *could* conceivably be eaten raw, ie in the caveman days: vegetables [except for starchy vegetables or beans] and fish, poultry, and meats) and less (ie, just 20%) COOKED foods (or foods which *must* be cooked in order to be edible: ie, grains and beans). This is because your stomach is actually more adapted to the prehistoric diet - grains and beans are comparatively new to us, and harder for us to digest. There are some good books on raw food by David Wolfe ("Eating for Beauty" or "Sunfood Diet") - plus you can just google "raw food" and find lots of ideas: https://www.google.com/search?num=100&hamp;btnG=Search (3) Pay attention to food combining: non-starchy vegetables go with anything, but starches, fats and proteins don't combine well with each other. This is because your stomach uses different enzymes (which tend to cancel each other out) to digest starches, fats and proteins - so if you combine starches, fats and/or proteins in the same meal, you'll have a harder time digesting your food. In other words, meat/chicken/fish and salad/veg is fine - or starchy vegs (potatoes, or grains) and salad/veg is fine - but meat/chicken/fish plus potatoes/pasta/rice will be harder to digest and leave you with a "heavier" feeling. This is also why beans can cause gas - beans contain starch, fat and protein, so they take a long time to digest in your stomach, and can cause gas. There is good info from Donna Gates (inventor of the "Body Ecology Diet") on food combining: http://bodyecology.com/ (4) A couple final, specific notes: (a) The biggest things to avoid are trans/hydrogenated fats (actually butter, olive oil or coconut oil are better for you than margarine - because the hydrogenated fats in margarine can disrupt cell membranes, letting all kinds of things invade your cells). Also avoid artificial sweeteners (women's brain cancer rates in the US doubled the year that Nutrasweet was released - I suspect because of the diet sodas so popular among women) and avoid sodas (which are highly acidic - it takes 30 glasses of water to neutralize the acidity of just one Coke!). ( And, strange as it may seem, soybeans aren't all that great for you - because they contain phytic acid, which can leach minerals from your system. Sally Fallon and Mary Enig have written about the benefits of coconut oil and the problems with soy: https://www.google.com/search?num=100&hamp;btnG=Search PDF! http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Diet and nutrition can seem very complicated at first - but eating healthy can actually be very simple. (1) Eating more alkaline-forming and less acid-forming foods, (2) eating more raw and less cooked foods, (2) paying atttention to food combining (avoid combining starches, fats and proteins all in the same meal), and (4) avoiding the worst things (trans/hydrogenated fats, sodas, artificial sweeteners) - just following these few basic simple guidelines you'll start feeling and looking better right away. Finally - nobody's perfect, and you don't have to be a fanatic about your diet. It's often better to try to eat right "most" of the time rather than "all" the time - so that at least you're taking steps in the right direction, without feeling guilty for those moments when we all have "cravings". For specific information on specific foods, try out this excellent website: http://www.whfoods.com/
