Ah yeah, you have to be careful with those. That's why I'm using Xisto, so far it appears to be very accomodating Just whatever you do, avoid byethost as I've used them before and they were absolutely horrible

Coder Or Designer? HELP ME SOLVE THIS DILEMMA
albumfreak replied to phill3112's topic in Websites and Web Designing
You should probably have a good idea about both if you want to be decent at web design. But if you wanted to choose one to learn more about, i'd make it coding. You can only go so far when making a webpage graphically when you need to dip into your coding skills and mix around with the php and css to make your site look exactly how you want it to. It might seem a little bit harder at first but, trust me, it will pay off. It's also good because you loose the bottleneck that is coding because with coding, you can only do so much as your knowledge allows you however with design, you can do as much as your creativity lets you do. the choice is easy -
I use dashcode for mac, it comes with the developer tools. It's not particuarly advanced and it doesn't have as many features as dreamweaver but now that i'm using databases and php, i don't really use dreamweaver as much. I've actually been wondering if you can load an entire database and bunch of files into dreamweaver and edit it visually as you can with html, but it seems unlikely to be honest. I used to use dreamweaver and I still use it at school sometimes but have found myself using it less and less as i dont really need it as much with what i've been doing.

Why Smf Has Lost Its "touch"
albumfreak replied to karlosantana's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Doesn't seem that groundbreaking but it does seem nice. I'm actually working on a simple machines forum installation at the moment and i'm not entirely happy with the interface that it uses after coming from an IPB background. But, for something that is free, i guess you can't really complain. I'm actually more interested in PHPBB3 because it looks like it might be a bit better than SMF but I think it is too late now because i've already done too much work on my simple machines forum to turn back now and install a new one. -
If i were you, i'd be more inclined to use PHP. As the web is moving towards 2.0, its better to have dynamic content and it is more future proof. Plain old html is boring and dynamic content is what is interesting to people and what will give your site the edge when compared to other sites. I recommend that you install Joomla (free content management system) and use it to make your website. I'm currently using it and it works great! It is completely customizable and you can change everything about it. But not only that, but it is very powerful and will allow you to do pretty much anything you want with it. Do a google search about it and make up your mind as to whether you want to try and do something like that. However if your site is only really simple, i would probably just use html because it would be easier. joomla is better to use if you're thinking of having a lot of content or at least a fair bit and you want a better way to manage it so it doesn't all just get lost. You can archive and whatever in joomla so i still think its your best option

Start getting some tutorials and following them and just have a look at the sites you like and take into account the certain aspects that you like about them, and then think to yourself why it is good and why it is better than what you have, and work on making yours better. Design can be difficult so you need to do your research and be creative if you want to have a good design

I'm sure that I saw something on the SMF website that mentioned a web install, if that's what you mean? I'm not sure exactly what you mean. It isn't that hard to install it though so maybe you should think about doing it the regular way. All you have to do it modify the config file with your settings and you're good to go.

Where Is There A Good Site To Learn Web Html?
albumfreak replied to Hayabusa123's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I second the idea to visit w3schools, its a great site with a lot of great ways to learn. I used it when i first started out and it taught me a lot about css and html and the like. Now i'm trying to learn php and i'm sure that will come in handy. Apart from that, just do a google search for "learn html" or "html basics" and i'm sure you'll find plenty of results that will teach you all about the magical and mysterious world of html and css. -
Firefox is so great because of all of the additions you can make to it by using extensions and because it is much faster and easier to use than IE with a better interface. Just the .png problem with IE6 is enough to keep me away from it. I'm surprised that people still use IE a lot when there is a much better browser out there for free. Get firefox

The Best Browser In Your Opinion for WIN32/64 systems
albumfreak replied to jacob's topic in Software
Firefox <_<Have used it for a long time and I love it, wouldn't use anything else (except safari sometimes). -
I'm surprised you feel this way. I am using the Firefox 3 beta for mac and I think its great. There are heaps of new things, mainly small ones, that really stand out and make a difference when I'm browsing the web. Maybe you should have another look around and be a little more open-minded when looking at the new features and i'm sure you'll find things that you enjoy.

I've seen this before and wasn't entirely sure what the difference is as I have a gmail account and somebody that I know has a googlemail one. Thanks for clearing it up

I tried this once but it didn't seem that great. I just used the built in mail program that comes with my mac "mail.app". Works great and very easy to use, i'd recommend it to anybody

I get these all the time too, its best just to ignore them. It's hard to believe that people fall for these scam emails when it's so obvious that they're completely fake. I do feel sorry for anyone that might accidentally fall for it though because once somebody gets ahold of your details, like what would happen if someone were to fall for that spam email, their whole lives could become ruined. It's sad to think about it, but things like that happen every day.
