  1. Here is a work in progress I would like to share it with Astahosters. Lately, a friend of mine joined my blogging team at Splat. She had been of great help even before when I was working on my website WiseTome.com though she just joined Splat. To show my appreciation, I thought I would gift her an artwork. And with this, I hope to improve my skills too. So, here goes. It is still a work in progress. I used her photograph as a reference and worked on it from scratch in Inkscape. The basic outline with flat colors is done, and I have just started to work on the details. I hope to complete it as early as possible, but every now and then, I would post updates here. Nothing much would change other than the shading detail I would be adding. Right now, little work has been done on the highlights - work still remains on the highlights. After that, I would need to work on the shadows. For those who know vector art, I would like to state that to this point, I have not used any gradients. I have only used bezier paths and polygons with flat color fills. I might use few gradients to give additional depth at the end of it. But as far as possible, I am trying to get this artwork done with flat colors. Effort Spent: 3.5 hrs Software: InkScape
  2. WinRAR! I do not use WinZip anymore. Long back I used it, but the latest setup of my PC does not even have a version of it installed. I got hold of WinRAR and am sticking to it. Anyways, thanks for the update saint-michael. Any software, we need to be aware of the security breaches and need to update it with the patches made available as often as possible.
  3. I am not sure how I could animate it with the tools available to me. I mean, I totally work with opensource softwares, and for this particular piece as I said earlier, I used Inkscape. I am not sure how I could animate it with Inkscape, and I am not even sure if Inkscape has the capability. But even if I did have the tool, I am not sure if I would be able to do it. Technique and theory wise I do know how to do it, but the methods I know, takes a lot of time and that is something I lack. Doing these works as a hobby (as I have a day job to put the bread on the table), I am not sure I will be able to afford enough time on this. Animation as a venture though, does tickle my thoughts. Thanks for the comments, kgd2006. I am working on another piece, that I will put up here (as soon as my crappy net connection is corrected by the ISP). It is no where close to finish, but I would put updates here. Photo realasitc imaging - that is a different medium altogether. I did try it out a few time, but I am not good at it. So, I stick to what I can do and try to improve it.
  4. Yes, KDEWolf, I too think that we have a bit lesser number of artists here at Xisto. I see that Xisto sets itself apart from Xisto in terms of in depth discussions that we involve ourselves in topics that we start - I do not see why artists would not be able to do that. I mean, they are the most expressive lot, are they not? (May be forum is not their medium of choice, ) Anyway, before I shoot of on a tangent, welcome to Xisto leafbunk. I see that you are already hosted here and that would mean we would be seeing a lot of your works around here at our forums. About the picture - nice! What software did you use? There are few thing that puts me off though - the horizontal stripes and the fat edge of the snow - was there any specific thing you were trying when you tried that out? Yet, it is a great concept and the emotions have been rightly expressed on the beings face.
  5. Thanks for the link to SQLite, miCRoSCoPiC^eaRthLinG. I sure will check it out. But from the brief description that you have given, it seems to be a database with APIs in C/C++. I can very well use C/C++ but for this project, I would like to use Java (and the Swing classes along with it). Can I connect to this database from a Java program? And about MySQL - it may seem like an overkill to go for this option, but if I can have a program written in Java connect to it, I do not mind going for a MySQL setup.
  6. foolakadugie, thanks for the comments. About the time it takes to create vector art - I think it is dependent on the person. I find it easier to work with vector art than with raster graphics, and I get the desired result in much lesser time working with vector graphics than with raster graphics. I will surely post about the next project here. And I am not sure vhortex was asking about the software I used to create the vector art - because as I stated in the first post I used Inkscape (https://inkscape.org/en/ '> https://inkscape.org/en/ ) to create it. (Not Illustrator - I cannot afford it yet).
  7. Does any one have experience or solution for this? Here is what I want:I need to develop an application that would be running on only one computer which is not networked in anyway. It will be a standalone PC and it would not have internet connection. The application I need to develop would most probably be written in Java - and it may go for Java swing components. The application would need a database. I need to install the database on the same computer. What open source or free database options do I have that would let me develop an application using Java on it?Can MySQL be setup on a standalone PC and be accessed by Java on it? If not are there other options and what are they?
  8. Very funny. I actually do not want to work on this - because I need to show the simple patches in my blog to emphasis the point that vector art is composed of points, lines, bezier curves, and polygons (that are based on mathematical equations). The above image would serve as an example - but yeah - I too see the potential for adding more details to it. I am not sure if I will do it - I am working on another one, which I am going to put full detail into. Er... could you elaborate please? I did not get you.
  9. I wanted to create a quick vector art for a blog post of mine. I sought inspiration from a World Of Warcraft wallpaper, and created this in about 1 hour using Inkscape. It turned out pretty good. It is not a polished work but I would be using it in the same format for my blog article on Vector Art. https://g' alt='Posted Image' class='bbc_img' /> Comment and critique please.
  10. A week back or so, I happened to stumble across Inkscape (https://inkscape.org/en/) and I was hooked. In a few days, I was able to create some things that were recognizable, and I created two clip arts at my blog as give aways: Red Ornament Dreidel And after that, I went ahead to create a tutorial that explains the basic steps and concept of vector art - as I have learned. I put that too on my blog, and can be found at the following permanent link: 10 step tutorial to create shiny ball vector art Please give your comments and critique.
  11. Wow. I am not even sure how such thing can happen from my account! I mean, I have not disclosed my account password to anyone, and the couple of other people who have access to my website (on the side of adding content) are the only ones who are authenticated through the websites - Drupal authentication or Wordpress authentication. I do not give away emails from my account and I personally do not use any email account provided along with the Xisto account. Heck! I was not even logging on to Xisto account for the past one month because I had involved myself in NaNoWriMo. I do not know how someone else could have had access to my accounts. Thanks a lot for considering that I could not have been the cause for such SPAM emails, and the root cause seems to have been outside my knowledge. However, miCRoSCoPiC^eaRthLinG, could you please let us know as to what actions I need to take in order for such an thing to not happen in future? I am totally clueless!
  12. Hi admins. I am trying to stay calm, but I am sort of freaking out now. I go to my site hosted at Xisto: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ (without the parked domain: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ ) and it states: "This Account Has Been Suspended Please contact the billing/support department as soon as possible. " I do not see why this should be the case because I have 120 hosting credits. Could someone please look into this?
  13. I am not sure if the admins did look into this, or they did not - but I think it has set itself right now. The cron jobs are running smoothly for the past few days.I am just a bit superstitious about putting this info here because Murphy's Law had hit me last time. I said it was working and after few days it was not. Hopefully I will be spared by it this time around.
  14. If one goes by a compass, and always has to travel north west, then I think, after starting at any point on earth - assuming earth is a perfect sphere or even a bit bulged around equator - one would end up practically at north pole. I say practically at north pole because, once we start traveling north west, we will never reach north pole, but would spiral into it. Once we reach the north pole, we would be going around the north pole for eternity with the radius getting smaller and smaller a wee bit every time we come around, but theoretically, we will never reach the north pole point - as long as we consider ourselves to be a point in geometry - of course.
  15. I think it is still in effect. I was able to upload few files a bit earlier, but lately, the changes I made to my CSS were not seeming to effect and it was driving me nuts. I did not know what in the world happened to my CSS/HTML coding skills. Just before I was going nuts with Filezilla, I came here and checked up this thread - to effect saved my sanity. Thanks for noting it vujsa. At least, we are able to make changes to the database - else my blog would be stuck in a shameful state of incomplete theme. (Have set it to a default theme and am waiting for this to pass over). Why does it always have to happen when I am working on something! Murphy's Law in action! Hope it does not stay for long.
  16. Thanks for the comments, seec77 and tezza. Yes, I will try to keep you all updated on this work, but I must tell you that, I have put my self on hold on this for some time. I will not be working on this design for a while - till end of November to be exact. What will I be doing till then? Check out: http://forums.xisto.com/topic/91669-topic/?findpost=1064358896
  17. Well, I searched the forums and found that NaNoWriMo was mentioned remotely only once at Xisto - and I thought it deserved a thread of its own - noting that it is taking up almost all of my free time. At NaNoWriMo.org people race against time from November 1st 12:01 am to November 31st 11:59 pm to write a novel that has a minimum word count of 50000. All concerns for quality is thrown to the air and only the quantity is given importance. I happen to get myself into this indulgence this year and thus I would be having very sparse activity here at Xisto forums. Luckily I have enough hosting credits tucked away and I can afford it. Here is a widget that displays my progress. (Click on it to go to a detailed report on my progress). Though I have put it up at my blog, I thought I would post it here to so that my fellow AstaHosters can see how I am doing. I am already behind schedule, and I things are looking very bleak. Wish me luck guys. And if it happens that there are other NaNoWriMo addicts here at Xisto, put up your progress bar as well.
  18. I do not think we have shell access through our accounts. So, I do not know if I can try that. Moreover, the odd thing is that it works once in a while. But for the past few weeks it does not work.It is really a nuisance - admins, please look into this.
  19. I see no problem in the approach you are taking vujsa. I have been and am a forum administrators myself, and I know how tiring it can be to keep the forum clean and tidy of all the spammers. The present setup is good, and I take this occassion to say that all you adminstrators and moderators are doing a great job. And I will make sure that I will just use the 'Report' button in the future whenever I come across such junk/spam.
  20. Yes, I would be using that as the next step, before I actually go in and move those vertices to give the base for muscle groups. The thing with 'smooth' in edit tab is that it tends to scale down the geometry a bit. Also, there would be some places around seams where I do not want to smooth. I think, for doing this, I will select groups of vertices and 'smooth' them and then scale them up a bit to retain proportions.
  21. Well, if you have gone through some of the forum threads I mentioned at http://forums.xisto.com/topic/91581-topic/?findpost=1064358349 and you want something specific for Blender, you should go through the following link: https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Blender_3D:_Noob_to_Pro It is a book in the making but pretty much basic stuff are covered. And what is the basic and easiest thing to make? Well, you should try some simple architectural modelling in the begining - like a dog-house, or a simple house, and then some objects like bottles, vases. Parallely you can start making organic modelling - start off with cartoonish looking models and then you can create real looking and even character modelling. I do not know beyond that because, I am still in a phase where I can make only amature cartoonish models.
  22. No, I did not use a graphics tablet. I used simple mouse - I do not own a graphics tablet. I am not sure though how a graphics tablet would help in 3D desing where most of the work is done in perspective view - a mouse would give much better control. But for all 2D CG works, I believe tablets would be greatly helpful.
  23. This model?Well, it took about 10-15 minutes to do it. It is really easy to do it if one has a visualization of what one wants. And I used Blender latest version to create this. But it actually took me more time to get the screen shots uploaded to ImageShack. Man! My connection and their server - the combination can be too slow sometimes. So, yes, it took 10-15 minutes to create the above model from scratch using Blender.
  24. Well that is quite contrary to what I knew about Homeopathy. But it might be... I am not sure of it.
  25. Now that you mention it, yes it does look a bit like monkey. I think I have to make the jaws and the front shoulder a bit more bulky to give it the feline look. And hopefull, when I draw out the ears, it will make it look more like a cat.And how I came to this stage? Well, it is actually simple. You start from a cube, and then start extruding it at its ends. Then you move the extruded edges/vertices around and rotate them a bit, and keep doing them. Once it is done from tip of its nose to its hind, then we just need to start extruding some selected faces on the torso and there by we get legs. Do the same on the quad on its beind, keep extruding, moving and rotating, and you get a tail. I woudl require to do a similar thing for its ears, and then it all comes to tweaking it a bit more, so that the body structure is got, and then it is all about detailing.
