  1. I am a fairly new user. I have a few months practice with Fedora Core 4, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4, and Knoppix Live DVD. First, I would like to say that I like the stability, the free aspect of Linux, and the relative immunity from viruses and other nasties. I think Linux will be ready for the desktop of the average home user, when it is easy to do the common tasks in it. Most of those are already very close. I think the hardware support for certain devices needs improvement, as well as some software tasks such as installing new software, updating existing software, and configuring software. Linux has been time-proven to be a reliable operating system. Although the desktop is not a new place for Linux, most Linux-based systems have been used as servers and embedded systems. High-visibility Web sites such as Google use Linux-based systems, but nowdays you also can find Linux inside the mobile sets also like motoming by motorola.Linux is very reliable and secure and it has not been uncommon for Linux systems to run for months or years without needing a single reboot.Viruses are very less in linux and unix systems. Although it is possible to create a virus to target Linux systems, the design of the system itself makes it very difficult to become infected. A single user could cause local damage to his or her files by running a virus on his or her system; however, this would be an isolated instance rather than something could spread out of control because there is nothing like autoexecute functionality in linux which is there in windows and if we are logged in with a non root account then it is nearly impossible. Also SELinux enhances the security manifolds. In addition, all Linux distributions are upadted regularly by the supporting communities. The general philosophy of the Linux community has been to address possible security issues before they become a problem rather than hoping the susceptibility will go unnoticed.Linux was designed and written to be easily portable to different hardware. For the desktop user, this means that Linux has been and likely always will be the first operating system to take advantage of advances in hardware technology such as AMD's 64-bit processor chips.Linux offers freedom of choice as far as which manufacturer you purchase the software from as well as which application programs you wish to use. Being able to pick the manufacturer means you have a real choice as far as type of support you receive. Being open-source software, new manufacturers can enter the market to address customer needs.Choice of application programs means that you can select the tools that best address your needs. For example, three popular word processors are available. All three are free and interoperate with Microsoft Word, but each offers unique advantages and disadvantages. The same is true of Web browsers.Linux itself and many common applications follow open standards. This means an update on one system will not make other systems obsolete. Each Linux distribution comes with hundreds and possibly thousands of application programs included. This alone can save you thousands of dollars for each desktop system you configure. Although this is a very small subset, consider that the OpenOffice.org office suite is included as well as the GIMP, a program available for photo editing; Scribus, a document layout program similar to Quark Xpress; Evolution, an e-mail system equivalent to Microsoft's Outlook Express, Open office which gives most of the MS Office funtionalities like word processing, presentation and Excel shhets; and hundreds more. For the more technically inclined, development tools, such as compilers for the C, C++, Ada, Fortran, Pascal and other languages, are included as well as Perl, PHP and Python interpreters. Editors and versioning tools also are included in this category.Whether you are looking for Instant Messaging clients, backup tools or Web site development packages, they likely are all included within your base Linux distribution.More and more computers are being connected to networks. No system would be complete if it did not include tools to allow it to interoperate with computers running other operating systems. Once again, Linux is very strong in this area.Linux includes Samba, software that allows Linux to act as a client on a Microsoft Windows-based network. In fact, Samba includes server facilities such that you could run a Linux system as the server for a group of Linux and Windows-based client systems. In addition, Linux includes software to network with Apple networks and Novell's Netware. NFS, the networking technology developed on UNIX systems also is included.Other operating systems are the products of single vendors. Linux, on the other hand, is openly developed, and this technology is shared among vendors. This means you become part of a community rather than a customer of a single manufacturer. Also, the supplier community easily can adjust to the needs of various user communities rather than spouting a "one size fits all" philosophy. This means you can select a Linux vendor that appears to best address your needs and feel confident that you could switch vendors at a later time without losing your investment--both in terms of costs and learning.Because of a combination of the internal design of Linux and development contributions from a diverse community, Linux tends to be more frugal in the use of computer resources. This may manifest itself in a single desktop system running faster with Linux than with another operating system, but the advantages go far beyond that. It is possible, for example, to configure a single Linux system to act as a terminal server and then use outdated hardware as what are called thin clients. This server/thin client configuration makes it possible for older, less powerful hardware to share the resources of a single powerful system thus extending the life of older machines. Linux is a true multi-user operating system. Each user can have his or her own individual configuration all on one computer. This includes the look of the desktop, what icons are displayed, what programs are started automatically when the user logs in and even what language the desktop is in.
  2. I am not a hardcore gamer but i played many games and here goes my list of my favourute games:In racing games I Like the following games from the need for speed series: - Need For Speed : Hot Pursuit II - Need For Speed : Most Wanted - Need For Speed : CarbonOut of these games Need For Speed Most wanted is my favourite. Its graphics are really amazing the cars and tracks looks so real.It is literally the best of all of the Need for Speed worlds. It combines the great car customization and open world of Underground with the police chases of Hot Pursuit and the solid racing gameplay that the entire series has been known for.In first person shooting games i had played the following games : - Project IGI I'm Going In - Project IGI 2 Covert Strike - Delta Force - Splinter CellOut of the above FPS games "Project IGI 2 covet strike" is my favourite one. The game’s graphics are good, but not great. The textures are pretty good, and the environments are huge and seemingly boundless. In strategy games i had played the following games: - Empire Earth - Empire Earth - Art Of Conquest - Empire Earth -II - Empire Earth II -The Art Of Supremacy - Age of EmpiresIn startegy games the Empire Earth series is really good one .It is much similar to the Age of Empire but it provides some advanced civilizations then the Age of Empires and its gameplay is simple.
  3. Firefox is much better then IE in terms of strength and the security. Like Internet Explorer 7, Firefox 2 includes built-in antiphishing, but overall, Firefox 2 is much better than Microsoft Internet Explorer 7. Firefox 2 offers forward-looking features, such as Live Titles, as well as practical here-and-now tools, such as search engine suggestions, session restore, and inline spell-checking. Despite its many improvements, Firefox 2, like Internet Explorer 7, still does not pass the Acid2 Web Standards test, although, unlike Microsoft, Mozilla says it is working toward full compliance. We can dowload Firefox 2 for free, and unlike Internet Explorer 7, Firefox is available on a variety of operating systems: Windows, Mac, and Linux. There are also a wide variety of localized language versions of Firefox in comparison to IE 7. Again unlike IE 7, Firefox 2 does not require that we should shut down antivirus protection nor does it perform a system reboot. Unlike IE 7, which has reorganized its toolbar, Firefox 2 changes only the look and feel of its buttons. The new shiny-glass look is much more sophisticated, as are the rounded tabs and the hairline borders around the address bar and the search engine box. Tabs have long been a part of Firefox. Now, with Firefox 2, we can open any number of tabs, rearrange them, and reopen a previously closed tab using the hot keys Ctrl-Shift-T. We can also save active tabs as a bookmark so that you can open the entire set of tabs at a later time. Firefox 2 provides several built-in search engines, such as Amazon and eBay--far more than provided by IE 7--with the option to add even more search engines. One of the greatest features in new Firefox 2 is session restore; if Windows crashes and we have several tabs open in Firefox at the time, we can now relaunch Firefox with all the tabs intact. I found this feature to be very useful because if the browser window crashes due to any reason in that case all the tabs can be restored to the original state . Firefox 2 also provides us the ability to correct your spelling mistakes online, just like using a word processor. This is great for typing blogs or posting to a newsgroup. Common dictionary words are checked, with misspellings identified with a squiggly red line. We can add more words and even include dictionaries available in various languages. Once we have access to inline spell-checking, you won't want to surf the Web without it. Possibly the coolest new feature is Live Titles, formerly Microsummaries, which allows Web sites to stream updated data to your bookmarks. You can add the Live Titles functionality to the Merriam-Webster dictionary site, for example, and once we have done so, when we bookmark a page, for news sites such as the BBC's, we'll see the latest headline. Think of Live Titles as RSS-like feeds for your otherwise static bookmarks. Mozilla remains very responsive to fixing its vulnerabilities, pushing out updates within a few days of public notice. Microsoft, on the other hand, parses out its vulnerability fixes a little at a time. In the five years since its release, IE 6 has accrued a large deficit, and we see no sign that Microsoft is addressing new vulnerabilities found in IE 7 any faster. The underlying Web rendering engine within Firefox 2 is Gecko 1.8, and it is largely unchanged from the previous release, Firefox 1.5. Firefox is truly innovative, yet it's also very practical for everyday use.
  4. I have used the following Microsoft operating systems : - ms-dos, - windows 95, - windows 98, - windows me, - windowsXP - windows 2003 server Right now I have windows XP and Red Hat Fedora core 7 installed on my machine. Within the last year I have been moving toward using Linux. I like Linux because of several reasons. Most standard computer programs are available for Linux. Several Linux programs can read and write Microsoft Office files. So, if all you do with a computer is manage e-mail (Evolution can be used which is same as microsoft's outlook), create documents (open office can be used which supports all ms office formats), create graphics files (using gimp) and use spreadsheets, Linux programs do all those things very well. Until recently Linux has been more difficult to install and use than Windows. However, over the last two years there has been a effort by several Linux companies to make Linux easy to use by an average user. But why should one bother learning to use a new operating system other than the Windows one she is now using? Here are the reasons: Linux hardly ever crashes, mainly because the basic low-level operating program (called the kernel) that keeps the computer running is small. So, even when things go wrong with some higher-level part of the operating system or with a program, the kernel keeps chugging away. Linux almost never has to be rebooted after installing a new program. This saves much valuable user time and aggravation over the life time of a machine. In most cases the Linux file system does not have to be defragmented regularly, such as Windows does, to keep it from slowing down. Linux allows up to 16 different views of the desktop, I use 4 of them. In other words, programs that are running can be associated with different views of the desktop; you will see only the program windows for the desktop view of current interest. It is easy to switch from one desktop view to another by buttons on the task bar. There are many free or inexpensive programs available for Linux. It cost less to install and operate. By the way, most of the servers that provide web pages on the Internet are running Linux. Permission is not needed from anybody to move Linux from one machine to another owned by the same person. In fact, it can be installed on as many computers as there are in a given home at no extra charge. You can install it as a dual boot with a Windows system in order to try it out while still keeping Windows available. There are several different versions of Linux that are available for the desktop computers. I have tried Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Fedora, Open Suse10 and Knoppix. All are good in one way or the other. eg. Knoppix is a very good on CD/DVD operating system which you dont have to install and you can use it by simply booting the system with it. Its DVD version contains a huge amount softwares whereas SUSE's GUI is really very impressive and its packages are also really very good. Whereas Fedora is free distribution from redhat. Although it doesnt have vary good multimedia support like SUSE but it is very good for learning purpose.
  5. I am using file-zilla from six-seven months. It is one of the best FTP client softwares which i had used. It is very simple to use.The best thing about FileZilla is that it is a free software. It is not a propreitary software, its an open source FTP client for Windows. It supports FTP, SFTP, and FTPS (FTP over SSL/TLS). Some of the main features of filezilla-client are the site manager, message log, file and folder view, and the transfer queue. The site manager of filezilla-client allows a user to create a list of FTP sites along with their connection data, such as the port number to use, the protocol to use, and whether to use anonymous or normal logon. For normal logon, the username is saved and optionally the password. When we try to connect to a ftp site or link the message log is displayed along the top of the window. It displays the console-type output showing the commands sent by FileZilla and the remote server's responses. Filezilla-clients file and folder view, displayed under the message log, provides a graphical interface for FTP. Due to this graphical user interface Users can navigate folders and view and alter their contents on both the local and remote machines using an Explorer-style tree interface. Which helps the users to drag and drop files between the local and remote computers. The transfer queue in filezilla-client displayed along the bottom of the window, shows the real-time status of each queued or active file transfer. There is a FileZilla Server FTP server also with the help of which we can convert our personal computer into an FTP server also. Homepage for the filezilla client and Server is Filezilla Homepage

  7. You will need lan cards on both of the computers. Then follow the following steps :1. Connect lan cards of both the computers with a cross cable.2. Assign private IP address of same class to both computers (say 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2).3. Make sure that workgroup of both the computers is same to share files among them.4. To share files and internet connection you can run network setup wizard from control panel>network connections.5. To share your internet connection you can use a proxy server also.I hope this will help you.regards abhay
  8. 1. Run fdisk on your hard disk, converting your partition to RAID AUTO(type 0xfd). Save changes and reboot. Remember that the example is assuming your partition are /dev/hda9, /dev/hda10, /dev/hda11 and /dev/hda12. your actual partitions may wary. 2. initialze your RAID array: # mdadm -- create /dev/md0 --level=5 --raid-devices=4 /dev/hda{9, 10, 11, 12} this will aslo start the array. The array will immediately begin the construction process, but it can be used immediately. In a spare terminal window, run watch cat /proc/mdstat to keep an eye on the progress of array construction. 3. While waiting for this process to complete. we can start using RAID device. format the partition with an ext3 file system. We will use 4k blocks. # mke2fs -j -b 4096 -R /dev/md0 4. See if you can mount /dev/md0 /data. This command should work, even if the array is still building. 5. The mdadm --detail command can be used to display used to display useful information on the state of your RAID devices. Try out this command, mdadm --detail /dev/md0. 6.Try creating some files in it /data. Add entry to /etc/fstab and test mounting and unmounting the file system.
  9. Its quite often problem occurrs, There are onliy few steps to come over the problem 1. Put the CD of Windows 98 in your CD ROM Drive 2. Boot from the CD-Rom 3. go to the CD-ROM's Win 98 folder by typing (a) cd your drive letter: ( cd win98 4. the last step you hav to do is type the following command as fdisk /mbr It will install the windows BOOT LOADER again 5. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del 6. Remove your Windows 98 Cd 7. your Window will start with no error on that. Have a nice Day
  10. Firstly create the Directory you want to share. 1. #mkdir /share give the directory the permission of the others users too. 2. #chmod 777 /share 3. add the users who are able to access the directory #useradd -s /bin/false xyz 4. for giving password use command #smbpasswd -a xyz 5. Now go to the file smb.conf as #vi /etc/samba/smb.conf 6. go to the bottom of the file, there will be entries as [share] comment = the comment can be anything path = where the folder is valid users = whom to give the permission public = no writable = yes printable = no browsable = yes If you want everyone to access the share then put 'yes' in the public field. 8.Start the SAMBA service by using the command #service smb restart 9. now check the SAMBA share by using the command #smbclient -L IP Address -N there is one more command to check the configuration error as #testparm
  11. Installing an Internel Modem is quite heavy task. me too having an internel (Smart link Modem). I mhaving the drivers too. But not able to install it successfully. Then now i musing the Airtel GPRS Connection and there is the problem too i m not having the Drivers for the CA-42 cable. So If u are able to install the modem then tell me too.
  12. If i have to use a graphical user interface then personally i prefer GNOME over KDE because when i started my RHCE training since then i m using the GNOME . I think Gnome is more minimalistic then KDE, while KDE likes to let you know that it has all these cool features by putting lots and lots of stuff on the toolbars. Gnome has a more consistent human interface. KDE does a few things better (bundled apps, burning CDs).Gnome is more simple and uses less resources and in my opinion GNOME is more STABLE and faster than KDE.But normally i uses command line interface rather than graphical user interface. regards Abhay
  13. The RHEL installer provides the GRUB boot loader, GRUB (the GRand Unified Boot-loader). /boot/grub/grub/grub.conf has a format of global options followed by boot stanzas. Here is a sample grub.conf: timeout=5 splashimage=(hd0,0) /grub/splash.xpm.gz password --md5 $1$/iX9y$Bkskfdsd4443gnff default=0 title Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS (2.6.9-648_EL) root(hd0,1) kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.9.EL ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 initrd /initrd-2.6.9-648.EL.img title Windows XP Pro rootnoverify (hd0,0) chainloader +1 IF ggrub-install fails for some reason try the following: 1. type the command grub and press enter 2. type root (hd0,0) 3. type setup (hd0) 4. type quit IF still problem occures, then reinstall the grub by /sbin/grub-install /dev/hda or use these three commands: Have a nice day
