  1. Single quotes are parsed faster than double quotes because the PHP parser doesn't expect anything to be escaped or any special characters to be added in by single quotes. It just expects a plain string. Also, double quotes are used more often than single in HTML (unless you're one of those freaks that surrounds tag attributes with single quotes ), and even in normal speech. So it would make more sense to use single quotes than to escape 10 double quotes in your string, and also sacrifice speed.
  2. echo "<span class=\"mystyle\">".$giorno[$gisett]." ".$mese[$mesnum]." ".date("d")."</span>";Why not just use single quotes? They parse faster, are easier and faster to type, and allow you to type double-quotes without escaping them. echo '<span class="mystyle">'.$giorno[$gisett].' '.$mese[$mesnum].' '.date('d').'</span>';
  3. What I did was start by looking at a message board source, punBB for instance. Then I tried to learn what it did to the HTML by comparing the PHP to the HTML it outputted. Then, I went to http://php.net/ and looked at their tutorial. After that, I went to http://www.hackingwithphp.com/ and learned there. Finally, I started to try to add my own features to the message board source until I was experienced, while continuing to learn from hudzilla.
  4. Well, I went to PC Warehouse today. Their sign said that they were open from 12-3pm on sundays. Apparently, they weren't, at least at 1:30 when we got there! What a waste of an hour-long trip!My dad's gonna try again this week on a weeknight. Hopefully they won't fool me twice... shame on them! If this doesn't work out, then screw Microsoft because I'm getting a Linux!
  5. When Michael Jordan left the Bulls, the aura disappeared, and the magic was lost. Phil Jackson. Scottie Pippen (sorta). Dennis Rodman. Everybody split up. Since then, the Bulls have been one of the worst teams in the NBA, with around 20-25 wins per year. They started this season 0-9.Since then, the Baby Bulls have been on a major winning streak, and they are now back over .500, with the help of Kirk Hinrich, who looks like Mr. Spock and plays like John Stockton, Ben Gordon, who led the UCONN Huskies to the national championship, and Luol Deng, who has played amazing all season after starring at Duke. If the season were to end now, the Bulls would be in the playoffs! Are the Bulls... back?EDIT: Steve Kerr left, too. But nobody cares about him, lol!
  6. I am currently learning from 2 sources: 1. PHP and MySQL Web Development by Luke Welling and Laura Thomson - the only PHP book in my library and 2. http://www.hackingwithphp.com/ - the best PHP tutorial I have ever seen (there's a newer version of it at /phpbook, but i like the first version better) I also began learning at http://php.net/ but the other sources are better. How about you? Where did you learn PHP?
  7. if anything ran on linux, i gladly would! what if i want to play games like doom 2 or half-life 2? i don't think anyone made those for linux...
  8. i'm also 14 years old... still in eighth grade...but its all good because i'm the oldest kid in my school!
  9. well according to all my computer nerd friends: there is no true way to completely erase a hard disk... (well, maybe setting it on fire would erase it ) i also think that Microsoft would find some way to prevent consumers from using it ineligibly, and i guess permanently bruising the hard drive is the easiest way to accomplish it. also, its a known fact that OEM xp disks can only be used on one computer; that's one of the reasons its so cheap!
  10. the ads are there because ad-clicking is basically the only way that Xisto can get paid! if users stop clicking, then there will be no more free hosting! even worse, the site staff won't get paid! OH NOES!!1
  11. it still doesn't work for me: my full nightly command (midnight EST):0 19 * * * /usr/local/bin/php -q /home/gamefaqs/public_html/cron_omgwtflolbbq/daily_purge.phpdid i forget something? am i supposed to put a "GET" in somewhere?please help! this is really important for my site!thanx in advance
  12. UPDATE: my dad's doing me a huge favor and he will be taking my PC to a store called PC Warehouse tomorrow. i hear that they are very good, very professional, and they won't overcharge. i'll see how it goes... another update hopefully soon, if anyone cares...
  13. what makes firefox so great is its customizability. imagine what firefox would be without extensions, themes, and without an open source! when you let absolutely anyone submit improvements to the source, and allow for easy creation of extensions without touching the browser source!also, mozilla is really great at advertising its browser... i really do not though how they managed to do it!
  14. hehe, great posts, Opaque!i was wondering... would you be in favor of users who purposely test those "unlimited" plans and mass click their sites just to prove you right and destroy those hosts? i mean, it would lower Xisto's competition count by far!!!
  15. there were major problems with my computer (reasons don't matter) and i couldn't reformat it the right way... (by popping in the xp disk). so i put it in another computer as a secondary drive in a different computer, and it was successful. those of you who are experienced with OEM disks are probably expecting the horrors i am about to relate to you... as anyone with a speck of knowledge about hardware knows, there is no way to COMPLETELY erase a hard drive, no matter which way you reformat it. so, when i booted up my computer again, it gave me a message "NTLDR IS MISSING". that sucked... badly.... very badly..... i immediately realized why. OEM disks of windows (like the one i ordered from zipzoomfly) can only be used once! somehow, the disk was thinking that i was trying to install the OS on a different computer. now i am screwed. i'll probably have to go to pc warehouse to ask them to somehow work around this problem and fix all the other problems that made me reformat in the first place! i'll inevitably have to buy another windows disk, another 125 dollars down the drain... and that's if i ever go back to cheap piece of crap OEM disks again!!!! all in all, my computer is screwed!!!!</my rant> thanks for listening!
  16. umm... so did you solve the problem? what happened?

    Phpbb

i use the wF gamefaqs spinoff source! it is very simple, it is very easy to create new files with, and it loads fast because its completely text-based! the only problem is, you'll need to know php to use it, because you have to de-bug and de-exploit it before you make your boards public! it gives me all the features i want; i'm happy with it! although i am in the process of creating my own gamefaqs spinoff source, it'll be awesome... if i ever finish it, lol!
  18. by the sound of it, i'd say that you either have malware, or some corrupted files/registry keys. you should download lavasoft ad-aware and see if it finds anything suspicious (most likely anything at all). if that doesn't work, my only guess could be that the firefox files on your computer got corrupted. if you have really important stuff in your cache, my recommendation would be to install another browser temporarily, automatically import everything into that browser, then reinstall firefox and import everything back to firefox. by the way, when was the last time you defragmented your hard drive? that might have *something* to do with it... (probably not, but its a good idea to defrag anyway)one last thing about popup blocking: Windows XP SP2 has a built in popup blocker for Internet Explorer. there are also numerous toolbars that can serve as a good popup blocker; i used google's until i got firefox myself. however, unless its absolutely necessary do NOT go back to Internet Explorer. get Avant or MyIE2 or Opera, but seriously, Internet Explorer sucks!
  19. cool tutorial, thanks a lot but shouldn't you use * * * * * for the time if you wanted it to run every minute?
  20. did he sue...??? did he do anything about it? obviously not.... so then he has no right to complain! i didn't say to leave it on the desktop. plus, what's the problem if its password-protected??? you know what, actually, i take it back. i'm wrong. not because of internal security, but because password files are exactly the kind of thing that spyware looks for. nevermind, my bad. don't put password in the name... i don't see why you would have to wait for a password management program to load when you can have a half-a-kb simple text file load in a split-second...
  21. i think you're missing the point of this topic. if you don't want anyone to use your passwords and compromise your profile, then why are you saving them for use by anyone, anytime? if you go to a website, and its in your browser's cache (my parents always look in the cookies folder), and you save that password onto your browser, who's stopping everyone else from going to that site and logging on and invading your privacy??? (nobody, that's right!) another problem with saved passwords is that there exists special software that can de-hash those hashed passwords! if somebody is really dedicated, they'll find a way. personal story: i haven't been acting really good in school lately. i usually don't do my homework. so my parents eventually took away the internet password (god, i HATE manual internet login)! yet being the geek i am, i found a way to get online without knowing the password. it only took me a few minutes! now that was without knowing the password at all. now, who is going to stop someone from getting on when the password is given to him or her?
  22. who says that people should be looking in your stuff? i just bury my text file hidden in my folder, give it a name with a warning or request or something (ex: passwords_PRIVATE), leave the sites' names and not the URLs and extra info so people can't go to the site without a little bit of research, and trust that nobody will look. if you see that your little brother has tampered with your account... well, you decide what to do... if you're really concerned about your password file's security... you should know what to do by now. PASSWORD PROTECT IT with an easy-to-remember, hard-to-guess phrase and remember it! that should be enough protection. one more thing, don't use universal passwords. if you don't know what that is, its when you use the same password for basically all of the site's you go to. if somebody figures out your password, consider yourself screwed! good day!
  23. i just use notepad. its not very hard! my system: site (username if more than one): passwordi don't need a special program to manage about 10-15 passwords... how many sites do you go on??? O_Omaybe i'm just used to using notepad for everything... i dunno. (my only problem with it is the lack of a good search tool, and no tabs like in firefox). its a pretty great program. simple, yet great! >_>
  24. so... if i had a file called in daily_purge.php in the public_html/asdasd folders that i would need to run daily at midnight EST, would this be right?: 0 19 * * * WGET /public_html/asdasd/daily_purge.php /dev/null or would it be this?: 0 19 * * * WGET http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ /dev/null or should i use GET??? what's the difference between the two O_O? and am i right in assuming that the server's local time is 0 GMT? please help! thanx in advance
  25. speaking of the hardcode... another question: is there any difference between the syntax of qbasic and that of visual basic?
