1. C'mmon, you can't say so... I don't know too much about Asia, but most of the Military dictators in Lantino America were a U.S. goverment thing. It has actually much to do with the interests the U.S. had (and still have nowadays) in latinoamerican countries. It doesnt even matter if a president was democratically elected by the country population, but if this president goes against those interests, in some way the U.S. goverment remove him from his position and ocasionally put a militar dictator (that was the case of Pinochet, for example) The apparent peace in some countries sometimes goes against real people's interests.

I agree. It's just like in Iraq, we put Saddam up as a dictator because we didn't like the previous guy. Now the media pretends we never supported him, etc.

Anyway, peace is possible if people just let go of fear.

  2. A seed flower grows beneath the soil

The energy sought is of purest white

It spreads to grow towards the sun of warmth

    For heat from the light

My feelings shall never completely die

    Despite this time of cold

My friendship will remain yours, barted gone

    For yours, it is sold

The petals will shine from the morning dew

The stem grows tall and strong

It always stands strong in the cold

    It stands the winter long

I lust the days that we have spent

Those times were wonderful to share

But now they are no longer remembered

For they are no longer there

One day we may look back and laugh

Of those times when we were young

Recalling the things we wished would have been

But alas, they can never be done

All around, the people we are unknowing

    Always left in the dark

    For they cannot be trusted

And that is why we part

Everything that we have shared was cherished

For you are someone special to me

And I hope one day we can continue where left off

Like a new blossom from a tree

    Thank you for being yourself

I think of you every day

You are someone I still love

So let's so continue being friends as we say

Starting over is the goal in mind

    It's desires are true

I wish I could only feel the same

Since those feelings are for you

One day we continue where we left off

But a sure thing I know I can tell you

    Nothing can be impossible

Since our efforts are for two

Here I am with open arms

    Wishing for this chance

This I hope will happen for us

I am willing to keep my stance

With all that has come to be

You will remain in my heart

I cherish you as a person and friend

    So let's not part

    coolness homie.

  3. Yea I saw it at a bookstore on sale for about 15 dollars.  I would recommend this outstanding book to anyone because it is very hilarious.  Also, my robotics team is based on this book.  Go team 481 Hitchhikers

    141207

yeah I just finished hitchhikers. It's one of the funniest books I've ever read. you can tell that the movie would be worse (even though I haven't seen it) because many of the jokes can only be made in book form. See what I'm saying? Dat's the way it works, homie. 5/5

  4. The same rules apply to a zine as to a website. Your first 2 considerations should be content and layout. Neither of those need fancy software. Until you hit the big time, you can do it all on Word and keep your money in your pocket.

Concentrate on your current subscribers. Find out what they want, what they like and don't like about your newsletter, then make it better and better and better.

When you're satisfied that your product is EXCELLENT, then start offering incentives to increase circulation. You need numbers to make it successful. 40 isn't nearly enough for a zine, unless you're running one of those super-pricey stock market insider $200 a year subscription price kind of things. If you're a top expert in your field, and people will pay anything to read what you have to say, then disregard this whole post--you can do anything you want.

Remember that turning your newsletter into a zine involves a whole lot more than just new software.

The quality of your paper must improve. $$

The quality of your printing must improve. $$

If you're going to produce it at home, it will go slower and use up more toner if you add glossy full-color photos, which I assume is what you mean by the difference between a newsletter and a zine, so that's still more $$. Same if you take it to Kinko's--color, photo quality, and glossy paper cost more.

All of this means raising your prices. Better poll your existing subscribers to find out if they'd be willing to pay more for a zine. If your newsletter is now free, it can be a big leap to get them to pay anything at all for your publication.

If you discover that your costs have gone too high, you may have to start selling advertising to offset your expenses. Selling ads is not easy, and, for most people, it isn't any fun, either.

Ask yourself why you're doing this. If your motivation is writing, sharing info with like-minded indivuals, or making easy money because you've found a nice little niche, maybe you have a good thing going and should leave well enough alone.

While I'm being the voice of doom, don't forget that paid magazine circulation is way down because of all the free ezines available online. I used to subscribe to at least a dozen mazazines. I actually had a mag broker who called me once a month to sell me more and I looked forward to hearing about anything new that I might like. Now, thanks to the Internet, I don't have a single paid subscription to anything.

If your dream is to publish a full-blown zine no matter what, unless you have deep pockets, ease into it gradually. You have lots of time-consuming, expensive surprises ahead.

Sorry to be so negative. If you go for it, I wish you the best of luck. If I've scared you off, you can always start your zine online. That's what I'm doing. You can have all the fun and creative outlet, free. Then let Google Adsense generate the revenue so you don't have to sell ads, yourself.

    Suz

    143144

thanks for all the info. I'm probably never to going to charge my current subscribers because right now it's just a newsletter. BUT, eventually, like I said I'll probably turn it into a zine later. I'm also thinking of using recycled paper eventually, which will probably cost much more too. Anyway, he reason I don't want to do a zine online is because...well...it's more traditional or something. I'm recieved responses from some of the people that get it saying it's better to get it through the mail. Besides, when reading from paper you absorb more stuff than from a computer. heh.

  5. Should it be abolished? You know what? That's really hard to say. To be honest, I am anti-abortion, but in some cases, it may be necessary to abort the baby. It MAY be necessary. I'm not saying it is total necessary without question, but I guess I have to be a bit "open-minded" per se. I see it as murder if it has to do with the mother not wanting to take care of the child or if the mother can't give the baby the "love" it deserves. I understand that it's the mother's decision to abort the baby (which I understand is a fetus when inside the mother's womb), and it really doesn't matter what several people think about what is to be done, but if babies are being aborted just for the sake of being aborted, is this no better than a man being shot in the head, or a kid being killed in a forest? Are these not "premediated"? I digress.

    141383

people tried to have a 13 year old foster girl give birth after she was raped in florida. that's going too far. They said she wasn't capable of making decsions, which was dumb. Eventually though, with the help of some organizations she was allowed to have the abortion.

  6. yeah, these two are classics

If you ever walked through London (or probably any other British city), you might have noticed all these cameras on the walls, the "Closed Circuit TV"-system. Most of the people I've been to London with did not feel that these cameras might be something one should be afraid of but I thought it's scary if there's someone who can trace all your way from the hotel through the city and back.

Nowadays there's just an endless tape running on the other side of these cams and everything's untraceable after a day or something but what will happen if there's a high-end computer running some expensive face recognition software? I'm always open for new developments but something like this is nothing a sane person would do.

Anyway, something to make the CCTV-system look better: On our second day in London, Lena's backpack was stolen in a subway station. Half an hour later some cop returned it to her...

... Orwell was a little bit mistaken with the time but it's a pity that many people read this book but not many recognize that orwell's world is not too far away from what we live in ... 2030 is my guess :/

    142695

I've never been to anywhere in Britain. I guess they have more cameras than over in dah US?

lets hope we're not dead by 2030. Someone will probably start a nuclear war for no reason and get everyone killed. Besides, it's obvious that Bush's plan is to try to "create" the rapture. I don't believe in that, but he's trying to end the world. Of course, while he's ending the world, he lets his rich buddies take over the country.(and other countries too. :( )

check out this very weird rapture site, by the way:

http://www.raptureready.com/ . what the hell are they trying to prove with their timeline central? That all these events are causing the world to end? Abortion is causing the rapture!? scary stuff.

  7. i used to stereotype for real stupid things like if someone wasn't vegetarian I would think they were mean and stuff. Kind of dumb.kids on my bus scream at hasidics and stuff, its evil. Some of them tell stories about how they threw rocks at Hasidics walking by. And tons of people in my school make fun of mexicans too, for no reason.

  8. @ DREADSTUFF

What's it like repeats many times to make the song catchy and to give it more feeling.

    @ MIDNIGHTVAMP

I feel the song's beat has a resemblence the beat of Boulevard Of Broken Dreams but it's not exactly like it.

    142894

The repetition reminds me of the lyrics of slave sprirituals, where they repeat things as they work to the beat. see what I'm saying? wat genre is this supposed to be?

  9. I am interested in writing a ezine as well, but if you want some practice Blogger is good and easy to use. Blogger and if you are hosted by Xisto, wordpress is in fantastico along with some other blog programs. You can customize them to your liking even put up ads related to your ezine. Im not as technically inclined as some people on here but the good thing is you can learn at your own pace and a lot of the programs have support forums.

I also would like to know if there are any other programs out there too

    141382

oh yeah Cutenews is great for that but I mean actual zines, not on the computer. see what im saying, homie? I mean like people sign up and they get sent thru the mail.

  10. Well, it's definitely a creepy story, in my opinion.  The worst part is how the main character grows to not just respect or fear "The Man" (if you will), but that he loves him. *shudders*  I also recommend reading "Brave New World" for another creepy science fiction story--that connects with the rich and some of the children problems I see now.

    141428

yesh. ill check brave new world out homie

  11. I think that we should continue to strive to advance our technology to make common life easier.

    141208

see thats where i disagree. Life isn't supposed to be easy. Life is life, and it's good that way. see what i'm saying? computers, phones, etc are all right, but having robots get our food or doing the garden for us is going to far. then you just end up doing repetitive activities like doing treadmills instead of actually doing anything.

  12. everyone's probably read this book. what's your opinions. The US (and other countries) are turning into something like the world in 1984. yeauh. I was watching Daily Show a few days ago on comedy central, where one of the "correspondents" was talking to some public relations type guy about making things sound better. He was saying all these bad phrases that a company or whatever may be accused of and the guy was saying the near opposite to make it sound good. At the end the "correspondent" said the word "Orwellian" and the guy just stared at him. It's the the concept "doublethink" in 1984. yup. everyone read it if u didnt already.

  13. Hi everyone! Well, I'm back with another essay from my experiences in Japan. I wrote this one as more of a reflection on living and working in a small town in Japan and a review of some of the things I learned. I guess you might also notice that I - as well as other teachers on the program - were struggling to find something to write about. Eventtually, something comes up and we write what was on our minds at that time.

Okay, enough rambling...hope you enjoy this entry!

    The "Imachu" Chapter

Wow! Hard to believe I'm already in my third year in Imazu! It seemed like it was only yesterday when I made brief (but impressionable) introduction on the stage at my school's culture festival. Now I'm an ALT "senpai" about to write my final essay before I head home to Canada for the holidays. Like many of you, I found it very difficult to find someting to write about this year. There's a lot I'd like to say, but only a limited space in which to do so. After countless revisions and false starts, I thought I'd just settle on some key things I discovered during my time here.

Living in Japan has taught me many things. Even though I was to be the one teaching at my school, I am constantly learning things both inside and outside of school - anytime and anywhere. Here are some of the key things I've learned in my two plus years in Japan: I've learned to be more patient and tolerant, I've gained a better understanding of both the English and Japanese languages, and I've tapped into many different creative ways to communicate my language and culture to others, not to mention that I've also learned a lot about communication in general.

Overall, I've adapted to life in Japan quite well. I'm not saying that it was easy. To be sure, I've had my share of hard times, but who doesn't? Bad days happen no matter where you are. Thanks to the many people I've met (both the locals and other ALTs) during my time here so far, though, I've had many more positive experiences than negative ones.

Another year is passing by and the "Imachu" chapter of my life will come to a close next summer. I feel that it has been worthwhile for me to stay the full three years. I'd like to thank the town of Imazu and the school for having me as their ALT. I often feel that I was lucky to be placed in such a friendly town because it helped me enjoy Japan for what it is.

    140357

cool. one of my friends has been to Japan and told me that it was like a different world, unlike other places he's been to. The only things I've read about Japan were Akira Kurosawa's description of it when he was a kid in his autobiography (greatest book ever), and a semi-kid's book by Burton Holmes. Do you think most places there are conforming into something like the US? i don't know, i've never been there so i might not know what the hell i'm talking about.

  14. I dont know- to tell you the truth what religion I am. I never went to Church, and neither did any of my family members. I dont know what religion I would pick if I went to Church, so I tell people I dont go to Church. Then they get mad at me and think I am going to hell (can I say that?) since I dont pray/believe in the 'right' religion. I do believe in God, I just dont know why religions make such a difference to some people. : angry : If you thing about it, most religions dont have much difference....

    SO STOP ASKING ME.

    :(

    138878

yeah you're right. Most religions are the same. Anyone ever read any Joseph Campbell books? He compares religions/myths and shows how similar everything is. Check out this Zen story about Christianity and Buddhism and their similarities:

    http://users.rider.edu/~suler/zenstory/christbudha.html

show that to whoever's buggin you about your religion.

  15. TEMPLE BELL: The distant sound of the temple bell?Azul continued along the pebble road. Every few seconds he would kick the pebbles and stones. He was approaching the marketplace. A dog was licking his bloody leg near a large, grey pile of stones. It looked nice enough. Azul scratched the dog?s head. It didn?t respond at all. It just kept licking the leg. Azul shrugged and kept walking. ?What a strange dog,? he thought to himself, ?I wonder how it hurt it?s leg.? He looked back, but could not see the dog. It was sitting silently aside the rock, probably in deep pain. ?Funny thing about animals,? Azul said aloud, ?they don?t feel any pain.? He remembered his grandma said that. Must?ve got stuck in his mind. He knew plenty of animals who showed pain. He reached the highest point on the path. Something feels funny on his arm. Pulling his toga away from his arm, he found the cause of the itch. His sunburned skin was peeling off slowly. He scratched it, and watched the white flakes fall down to the pebbles. It was addicting. The whole way to the market he scratched and rubbed the flakes off. The temple bell rang once more. It was an hour since he met that dog, and there were still flakes peeling off his arm, after the constant scratching. Perhaps some water would relieve the annoying itch for a while. He waved to a friend passing by, then sat down next to the fountain, sighing. The water was bluish green, and thick. Azul put his arm into the pool surrounding the statue fountain. It was freezing cold. The shock from the water soon disappeared, but it remained cold. He tried to think of something to black out the ?pain,? but trying just made him think of the coldness more. Alas, he couldn?t take it anymore. After drying his arm, the itch returned immediately. Oh well. SSSHARABA! --- An arrow whizzed by and shot an old man in the back. Down he went. Then another arrow appeared from behind Azul and went straight through a lady?s side. Azul sat there, dumbfounded. All the arrows going by sounded like a weird musical symphony. WHIZ. After about a couple 100 people had died, Azul made up his mind to leave his village. He may not make it out alive, but that wouldn?t matter much. Now that his whole family was dead. Most likely. Ahhh. After stretching for a minute among the catastrophe, he strolled nonchalantly to the Corot Lake, the town?s water source. Hmmmmm. Something across the water on the other side? What?s that? Azul grabbed his boat that was resting near the lake and started to paddle with his hands. He began to whistle an old tune his grandma taught him. He whistled it to the pink ostriches and sloths in the forest. There were Three Logs lined upAgainst the Morning BackgroundThey were cut last NightFor Display in the private yardRow Towards the LandIn the DawnOn your Finished Cherry-wood BoatThe last verse repeated two times. The memory of his grandma singing it made him shiver violently? The cool morning breeze before death. Yeah his grandma told him that too. Now he could see clearly what was at the other side of the lake. It was the leader of the Army, accompanied by five men. One aimed his bow and arrow and shot Azul in the shoulder. The shooter had a weak, fatigued, but happy expression on his face. Azul continued rowing, with blood pouring from his right shoulder. Slowly, it filled his small boat. The general and his five men stared at him, waiting for him to reach the land. Finally, Azul stepped off the boat, pushed it aside, and approached the men. While staring into their eyes, he quickly removed the arrow and handed it to the general, never blinking. ?I know what will happen next,? said Azul. ?You are going to point an arrow into my face, build up enough suspense, then release it into my pale skin?.Yes? That is what you are going to do, right?? Azul scratched his ear. ?Yes,? spoke the general. ?Mm. So why are you attacking my village?? ?Don?t know.? Azul stared at him. The general looked down, trying to avoid his glance. ?Aahem.? The general gave one of the men a nudge. ?Beeeegin.? Azul?s little black pupils were reflecting the light of the sun. ?Shoot him.? The mist behind Azul made the village hardly visible. Sweet smell of lavender. But how did he know what lavender smelled like? ?Kill him you son of a *BLEEP*.? The soldier raised the bow and arrow. ?Yeah, I was just wondering, before I die, why did you attack my village?? ?Why are ya getting so nervous, sir?? the solider asked the General. ?I don?t know, happens?sometimes.? His hands began to sweat. ?Take him over there and kill him.? ?Wait, I ant to see what he has to say first.? After a brief period of awkward silence, Azul restated the question. ?So why did you attack the village?? Finally the general responded, ?Gold.? ?Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah,? said Azul. ?OK.? He nodded slightly. Both the general and the men had nearly forgotten that pale young man in front of them had been shot with an arrow. His whole toga was soaked in blood. ?So, what are you going to use the gold for?? ??? The general?s eyes widened. ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??S..? ?What?? mumbled the soldier. ?Shoot him.? ?SHHHRRABA!? The arrow went threw his thigh. ?What did you shoot him there for?? ?Sorry sir. Thought you liked when they die slower.? Azul attempted to pull it out, but only snapped it in half. Standing up straight, he walked to his boat, pushed it forward, and rowed slowly toward the opposite end. Eventually, the winds took his place, so he lay down, facing the standing figures of the six men. His future killer waved and smiled, and Azul managed a weak smiled back. The BLUE SKY. The FLAMING BIRDS. FALLING DOWN. DISSAPEARED. MORE COME. SURREAL IRREAL. He was hardly alive. The sky was blue, and the sun bright. It hurt his eyes, but he could not look away. Perhaps he could have if he wanted to, though. He closed his eyes and the image of the injured dog came to his mind. The queer dog licking his gashed leg. The pain of his two wounds now began to become much more apparent. Aside the rock, the maroon colored dog licked the gash repeatedly in his mind. Yes, there was pain. And the sky was blue. And the water was green with his weak reflection. And the water shimmered when the blood from his shoulder dripped into the lake. And all animals show no pain. By two hours poor Azul was still alive, stuck in the middle of the small lake, with no wind pushing him on.--- When his grandma used to sing the old tune she played a oddly shaped circular instrument. You went ?pluck? on the three strings with your thumbs, and the vibrations echoed in the hole. It was so beautiful it made goosebumps shudder his face. -- It was all right dying in the boat. It was all right. THE END.

  16. yeah, well, its sounds kind of corny when you explain it. This guy sees an ad in a paper that says - Students needed. Must have a desire to save the world. When he gets to the office, there's an ape there and he starts to talk to them. Most of the book is them trying to understand how to fix the world. For example, they suggest such topics as overpopulation, civilization vs. non-civilized, etc. It's really good and it inspires you to try to help some world problems. It's by Daniel Quinn. Check it out, homie.

  17. Yeah it really stinks.  I liked that thing alot.  But for some reason the thing just stopped working.  The volume won't turn up and the buttons just all of a sudden just stopped working.  I have not done anything to it eaither like drop it or throw it.  But the big thing is the fact that I am not able to return it.  I wish that I could but it has been over the return date.  So I have to make one-hundred dollars to get an mp3 player.  That is going to be something really hard to do also.  I make very little money off of my websites adds and I do not want to get a real job because I am afraid that the work would affect the grades that I have in school.

    138284

too bad about your mp3 player.

just remember its only a material possession, see what im saying?

    yeah man.
