I back up my info on DVD-RWs. They have a lot of space, the backup process doesn't take that long. I can erase the contents when they become out-dated(, and thus do something for the environment ; instead of throwing them away). Of course you could buy another hard drive, which would be cheaper in terms of GB per dollar.Probably the fanciest method is using a RAID system. You wouldn't have to pay attention to backing up your info. Everything would happen in the background, usually without perfomance impact.

Bittorrent, Limewire, and Kazaa aren't download managers. These are programs that access a P2P-Network. solankyno1 meant by "download managers" programs that download files over a http or ftp (mostly) protocol. If you have ever downloaded a file with the Internet Explorer, you may have noticed that closing that download window causes the download to be aborted. Consequence: You have to start downloading again. The main feature of download managers is the ability to resume cancel/paused downloads. You can queue (We know that word from those P2P programs) multiple downloads.

But you can't resume downloads with the download manager integrated into Firefox.

And the battery capacity of the iPod is already low, and "a 2-inch color liquid crystal display" consumes a lot of energy. So photo slide-show for 2 hours on your iPod with music and then you have to look for a socket?!

In Germany DSL is way more popular than cable. The speed is pretty good. My ISP allows up 3MBit. The connection is very stable. But cable is cheaper than DSL. The only problem is that my ISP uses interleaved-mode instead of fastpath (for an extra fee I could get a fastpath connection). So when playing computer games, my ping/latency is relatively high.

I considered installing Linux, and I actually did. KDE looks great and it's easy to use (for some reason Konqueror crashed all time time when I started searching files).But when it comes to installing new software for Linux and upgrading your old software, it's so complicated. Of course, there's RPM, DPKG (I hope I wrote it correctly), and god knows what, but there're so many packages, that's simple overkill for me. And most of the software packages have to be compiled. And after installing your self-compiled software it's hard to keep track of the libraries, config files, and binaries in order to delete them oneday in case I don't want that software anymore.You have to pay attention to dependencies. I know there's debian with apt-get, but the installed software isn't cutting-edge. It's old, and there're features I want but aren't in the stable version yet. And you can't expect a beginner to use Debian.

PCs are definitely better because they're faster and they can be upgraded easily. Macs aren't designed for gaming, they're mainly used in desktop publishing. You even have to wait longer for mac games to come to your retailer because porting takes time. And some pc games don't even appear on the mac platform, because would you want to spend a lot of money on 1-2% of the computer market (and how many of those 1-2% actually play computer games)?I think Blizzard is the only company that starts to sell both Windows and Mac versions simultaneously (well, it's on the same CD).Anyway, if I had enough money, I'd buy a mac.

no you can use a feature that is called SkypeOut. You pay about 2 ct per minute if you call to eg Australia, Canada, Ireland, Germany, US. And sometimes even mobiles!The downside is that you need a credit card, and outside the US you won't find them very often. SkypeOutRates

If a website doesn't work with mozilla, then it has been poorly designed and programmed (especially those active-x controls and proprietary tags; Why did microsoft invent such crap? Why? ) because mozilla sticks to the w3 standard.

I use the firewall integrated in my router. It's safe. It blocks DOS attacks, just forwarding ports is troublesome. And if the app doesn't support NAT, you have a problem. And sometimes you don't even know why certain websites don't work. A friend of mine can't access SSL web sites when the router is plugged in.

I don't like WindowBlinds:1. It takes up a decent amount of memory, and thus slows down the computer, and sometimes you have a completely black window (repainting failed)2. Fullscreen apps (eg games) don't work for me:(3. You have to pay for it!

I've downloaded Slackware, but then my 2nd hard disk got damaged. :rolleyes:I already had the chance to try MacOS X. it's great, but those macs are pretty expensive, and macos x hides a lot of things from you (well, I don't care about that ). Uninstalling by simple deleting folders doesn't work all the time (just with small programs), programs like ms office v.x have to be uninstall the "ordinary way".

I use the GIMP, although the UI isn't really user-friendly (you know...gtk). It crashes sometimes on Windows, but under Linux is pretty stable. Photoshop is too expensive, especially as a student. If you consider that Photoshop costs in the US about $ 650, and in Germany about 1200 euros, you understand why...

I use WS_FTP Lite, because SmartFtp is too bloated in my opinion.I have two views, drag&drop and I'm done. It's fast.I wanted to use fireFtp (an extension for firefox), but it doesn't support passive transfer.

I use Spybot Search & Detroy on conjunction with Ad-aware. Since I use Mozilla Firefox, the immunization doesn't help much.

(Of course, you can use a plugin that then allows Firefox to support Active-X)Firefox can use themes, and the UI is fully editable. E.g. I have no menubar so I have maximum space for web content.

I use ICQ because all my friends use it, although I don't like the design.I've never tried MSN, AIM (and probably I never will) but I think I'll give GAIM a try.I just hope that it's stable and won't crash my computer.
