I back up my info on DVD-RWs. They have a lot of space, the backup process doesn't take that long. I can erase the contents when they become out-dated(, and thus do something for the environment ; instead of throwing them away). Of course you could buy another hard drive, which would be cheaper in terms of GB per dollar.Probably the fanciest method is using a RAID system. You wouldn't have to pay attention to backing up your info. Everything would happen in the background, usually without perfomance impact.

Censorship Should we fight it, or allow it?
NTNguyen replied to pr3dr49's topic in General Discussion
The documentary Fahrenheit 9/11 is a combination of 9/11 and this book Fahrenheit 451 - The temperature at which book burns (or something like that). It's about a fireman, well, they're called firemen. But it actually means book burner in this book. It reflects the problems of censorship in the US in the past - anti-communism, and burning of the books by the Nazis. -
I have 160 GB hard disk. My old seagate (40 GB) got damaged after I plugged out the IDE-cable too often. I'm still looking for my 8GB, but I can't find it...it has to be somewhere.

Bittorrent, Limewire, and Kazaa aren't download managers. These are programs that access a P2P-Network. solankyno1 meant by "download managers" programs that download files over a http or ftp (mostly) protocol. If you have ever downloaded a file with the Internet Explorer, you may have noticed that closing that download window causes the download to be aborted. Consequence: You have to start downloading again. The main feature of download managers is the ability to resume cancel/paused downloads. You can queue (We know that word from those P2P programs) multiple downloads.
-
But you can't resume downloads with the download manager integrated into Firefox.

It really depends. School building isn't dirty, we have an elevator, a kiosk, which is quite unusual in Germany. Teachers are OK. The school yard is relatively large.

In Germany school starts at 8:00 am and ends at 1:30 pm. We have two breaks, about 25 minutes in length. In secondary school (grammar school)We have:mother tongueEnglishmathLatin/French (You have the choice)-PhysicsChemnistryBiologyGeographyArts/Music (Got The Choice)HistoryPolitics (Goverment)SportsReligious Education

Rumoured New 60gb iPod! Color screen, picture viewing, etc.
NTNguyen replied to krofty's topic in Science and Technology
Steve Jobs denied it. (Who would not?) But why would they want a PhotoIPod? You can't watch photos and videos while you're jogging, eh? And the battery capacity of the iPod is already low, and "a 2-inch color liquid crystal display" consumes a lot of energy. So photo slide-show for 2 hours on your iPod with music and then you have to look for a socket?! -
Which Is Faster Broadband, Dsl Or Cable
NTNguyen replied to football123213's topic in Science and Technology
In Germany DSL is way more popular than cable. The speed is pretty good. My ISP allows up 3MBit. The connection is very stable. But cable is cheaper than DSL. The only problem is that my ISP uses interleaved-mode instead of fastpath (for an extra fee I could get a fastpath connection). So when playing computer games, my ping/latency is relatively high. -
Windows XP Registry Tweaks ... Post yours here
NTNguyen replied to rowita's topic in Operating Systems
Have you ever considered using X-Setup Pro?It allows you to do nearly the same without so much fuss. It even offers a recording function so that you can set back your configuration. Every option is explained. And why would I want to disable services with regedit (or any other registry editor)? -
I considered installing Linux, and I actually did. KDE looks great and it's easy to use (for some reason Konqueror crashed all time time when I started searching files). But when it comes to installing new software for Linux and upgrading your old software, it's so complicated. Of course, there's RPM, DPKG (I hope I wrote it correctly), and god knows what, but there're so many packages, that's simple overkill for me. And most of the software packages have to be compiled. And after installing your self-compiled software it's hard to keep track of the libraries, config files, and binaries in order to delete them oneday in case I don't want that software anymore. You have to pay attention to dependencies. I know there's debian with apt-get, but the installed software isn't cutting-edge. It's old, and there're features I want but aren't in the stable version yet. And you can't expect a beginner to use Debian.

PCs are definitely better because they're faster and they can be upgraded easily. Macs aren't designed for gaming, they're mainly used in desktop publishing. You even have to wait longer for mac games to come to your retailer because porting takes time. And some pc games don't even appear on the mac platform, because would you want to spend a lot of money on 1-2% of the computer market (and how many of those 1-2% actually play computer games)?I think Blizzard is the only company that starts to sell both Windows and Mac versions simultaneously (well, it's on the same CD).Anyway, if I had enough money, I'd buy a mac.

If you have a mac, what about GarageBand? It's free with every new mac and costs only $50 in the iLife '04 package.

Well, those responsebooster.com links don't work. "Can't access that web page. Sorry!" The links are sometimes the same: smithfam.com wants me to buy those e-books (I thought they were free) The only link that worked was: I didn't dare to open those crestco.com exe-files. Who knows what they are...

no you can use a feature that is called SkypeOut. You pay about 2 ct per minute if you call to eg Australia, Canada, Ireland, Germany, US. And sometimes even mobiles! The downside is that you need a credit card, and outside the US you won't find them very often. SkypeOutRates
