  1. for the geeks in you -> make your own custom DVR box just with off-the-shelf software and components: more versatile, all-purpose, with easy remote-control interface, even programmable through the internet, and most especially, NO monthly fees! :D

i think the tutorial from the site above is pretty straightforward even for non-geeks. :(

:D wow...I read through the instructions...and I think I'd better take a few more comp classes before I think about attempting anything big with this project. Of course, me not being a gamer, and not needing anything with which to stream Mp3s, I'd only be installing a very bare bones version, so doing this woulndt be so hard. And to think...the approx. $300 USD that i'd spend on this project could more than cover the TiVo fees in just a short time!

    Thanks serverph!

  2. Personally...I'd go with neither of the two. I do have a better suggestion actually. :DI favor the XMB board. It's quite nice, especially since the Nexus version was released. XMB is opensource freeware like PhpBB, but has all of the easy controls like Invision. There are a wide variety of hacks and mods for XMB and the support at the forum is quite solid. The admin CP is very easy to navigate, and all of the mod controls are a breeze to use.On the outside, the XMB board looks more like an Invision board, and changing the skins is very, very easy....unlike PhpBB. It's also easier to install and get running than PhpBB.

  3. oh, I really don't mind doing a few posts every few days here... I have time for that. I just don't have time for the kind of forums where they want you to do 25 + posts a week to keep up your site.I'm from New England, btw. I'm a little paranoid, so I won't say where exactly for now. I usually dont give away personal information like that until I'm very comfortable with a board. I'm still new here.

  4. My favorite bands at the moment are Linkin Park, Evanescence, Hoobastank, and Velvet Revolver. I also really like Good Charlotte, GreenDay, and NFG.Really though, I think the best bands on the list are Evanescence and Linkin Park. Neither of them are exactly within a genre, and both have very original sounds.

  5. me, I sorta do none of the above. I just kinda get really introverted and quiet. Then I eat a little chocolate, and go somewhere where people can't bother me. I'm clinically depressed, so I can't really help myself too much. But one thing I do reccommend you is avioding listening to sad music and try to eat a lot of chocolate. A doctor told me that it contains a really tiny amount of anti-depressant in it, so eating it can cheer you up a little.

  6. Simply put, this place rocks. But i'm sure most of us have been hosted by places that haven't. So, here's your opportunity to vent all you want about how utterly useless and crappy they were/still are. Here's the lists of former hosting companies on my eternal blacklist:Tripod: utterly useless, even for a newb. Too many ads, too slowDistanthost.com: my former favorite webhost...until they started with this crap about mandatory ad-clikcing. And then collapsed into a fiery hole of embezzlement and bankruptcy (no kidding there, either), leaving me with no good host for my site...for 6 mo.!Shyper.com: I was just there last week. I had them hosting me for a few weeks...then they delete my account without any explanation, and leave me cold. I didn't violate any of the TOS, bend or break any rules, or use up too much space/bandwidth. they just deleted me. So, they must die.:angry:

  7. Personally, I hate pop-ups. Even though I have AOL, and that blocks them, they can still be really annoying. The reason why I go for adless-webhosting is so my site members and visitors don't have to deal with that stuff. Not only are they annoying, but they make people want to come to your site even less, too. Anyone who say, is running I.E., and doesnt have the liberty of getting a popup blocker (say if you netsurf out of a library..) can get buried in popups. which really bites.

  8. I heard about this before. It's kinda funny, though. I thought that of all files, that .jpg files couldn't be corrupted like that. I guess so. I'm glad that I really only go on a few personal sites where the webmistresses are friendly non-hacker types. I think that the patch might have installed itself in my recent updates, but if it didn't I'll install it anyhow. I kinda would need to. I make anime layouts for a hobby.
