  1. Few things are more irritating than having to deal with a format that is incompatible with what you need it to do. It doesnât matter if itâs a media file, document, or shoe size; itâs just plain frustrating. To make your life easier, check out this list of 101 tools that will allow you to convert just about anything. http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
  2. Google is flirting with yet another effort to offer unfettered internet access over American airwaves, and as usual, it's facing endless back-and-forth with the FCC. http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
  3. A lot of times I connect my external USB drive, open up a command prompt and change directory into a folder inside that drive, then I do other stuff, I forget about the command prompt window still being open and when I go to disconnect the drive, it tells me it can't do it because the drive is being used. At that point, I simply close the command prompt window and voila - I can disconnect the drive.Maybe in your situation it's also something trivial like that.
  4. This is the one I use with excellent results. It is completely free and the only drawback - if you can call it that - is that it will show you a popup every few days when it connects to retrieve the latest version of the signature file. What I usually do is disable - set to manual startup, that is - both services that come with it, Guard and Scheduler, and initiate the signature update manually every so often, when I feel like it.Then, immediately upon the completion of the signature file update, I do a scan of active processes, just to check for immediate threats. And when I download files of questionable origin, before I open them, I right click on them and select "Scan with Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic".I have noticed that Avira also does malware scans. Although I tend to use AdAware and Spybot SD for malware, it's a reassuring feeling that you get a "third opinion" on those threats.I haven't been able to get the rootkit detection function to work with Avira. So I'm sticking with Mark Russinovich's rootkit revealer for now.By the way, I think this post belongs in a different forum, one that deals specifically with AntiVirus and AntiMalware software.
  5. Opera, the popular multi-platform browser has supported BitTorrent for some time now. After more than a year of development, the release of v9.50 Alpha sees the introduction of a uTorrent compatible Peer Exchange feature which will hopefully help to speed up transfers and reduce tracker load. http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
  6. "Envy" is an application for Ubuntu Linux and Debian, written in Python and PyGTK, which will detect the model of your graphic card (ATI and Nvidia cards are supported) and install the correct drivers. http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ _________________________________ http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
  7. My experience has been that you get the points for a tutorial immediately upon hitting the submit button, the only thing that might confuse you is that when you go to check your posted text a second time, you get a message saying there has been some kind of error. But the fact is that your tutorial at that point has been queued and is now pending approval.Personally, I don't like not being able to double-check or proof-read the text a second or third time, so I made a habit of staying away from the tutorials section, and posting my tutorials in the discussion forum that most closely matches the contents of my tutorial. If you weren't paying close attention to your credit score right before and right after posting your tutorial, you might have missed the differential. I know it happened to me several times, and I learned to check the credit system by closely watching my credit score. My conclusion is that the credit system works as advertised.
  8. Article "Five Things Microsoft Should Fix In Windows Vista Service Pack 1" http://www.informationweek.com/archives.asp?newsandcommentary=yes Many of the things he listed are not actually Microsoft's problem. Most people don't want gizmos and gimmicks. They just want their mice to work when their PCs awake from sleep mode. Fix that and they'll be happy enough with Vista.
  9. The Linux Vault, "The Linux Wikipedia", is a new wiki project founded with the mission of creating a centralized GNU/Linux information website. http://www.thelinuxvault.net/ Although to guarantee that all the information on this site stays current at the current pace of Linux-related development, you would require a wikipedia-size user base and that's not likely to happen. _________________________________ http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
  10. Newer drives intentionally lower the armature/actuator speed to decrease noise, which can sometimes affect drive performance, but to be honest, I kind of miss hearing the click-click-click of the days of old. Besides, if you can't hear the drive, it also means you can't hear the drive failing; the noise produced by most hard drives is meaningful and useful. http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ I want to see some defragging going on. And here's another video showing how much abuse a hard drive can take and still not give up trying to do work ("Get those files copied over or die trying"). http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
  11. Here's a chart depicting the evolution of web browsers. A very interesting look at the past and how far we've come. http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
  12. The storm worm has built a botnet of perhaps as many as 10 million PCs using a revolving strategy of current events and eye-grabbing "headlines" to lure victims into what may be the single largest operating botnet. http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
  13. It looks like Vista users that have noticed a slowdown in network traffic while they were playing music weren't imagining things, as Windows expert Mark Russinovich has reportedly confirmed that such a bug does indeed exist. Article: "Vista bug puts a snag in network traffic when music is playing" https://www.engadget.com/
  14. I'm curious how fast people's systems start up. As a side effect, I'm stress-testing Xisto's polling system. BTW, here's an interesting article called "Making Ubuntu boot in 19 seconds": http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
  15. A couple of interesting, related links on this topic: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ http://www.pendrivelinux.com/ http://archive.techarp.com/showarticle86ea.html?artno=431&pgno=0 http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
  16. Tech UK is reporting a startling new disc storage technology that could end the HD war between HD-DVD and Blu-Ray: the Tera-Disc. How much data? On a 1TB disc, you could store 212 DVD-quality movies, 250,000 MP3 files or 1,000,000 large Word documents. http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
  17. In order to append the output of a command to a file instead of overwriting the file you simply need to use the double greater than operator instead of a single greater than sign.I also think that, if you are going to do that, you may need timestamps before each command output. The native date command in Windows ("date /T" at the command prompt) only gives you the date and only in the format configured in your regional settings in control panel, but the date command in cygwin gives you both the date and the time and in a customizable format.
  18. I would certainly consider running an open source voice-over-IP server on my PC, opening a port on my NAT router and having my friends connect to me with headsets and a VoIP client / widget, but I ran a Google search using keywords "point to point VoIP" and nothing interesting came up. Googling is a skill I don't quite seem to have.Is anyone aware of a piece of software like this? Ideally my friends should not be required to create an account anywhere, since I would be running my server out of my home.
  19. Skype reports on the conditions which led to the company discovering a flaw in its P2P networking code. If you believe the official story, Skype's code wasn't prepared for a massive restart of PCs caused by the standard Windows patching process. http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Reboots caused by Patch Tuesday and Skype goes down on Thursday / Friday? Skype's own blog entry: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ The article leaves you seriously pondering why previous Patch Tuesdays didn't do the same thing. And what was it that caused their self healing functions to stop working? So are we all sure it has nothing to do with wiretapping? Are we sure it wasn't the NSA installing their software to monitor calls? Are we to believe such a suspect response from Skype? To prevent Windows from restarting after updates, do this: Start ->> Run ->> gpedit.msc In Computer configuration, Administrative templates, Windows components, Windows update Do a properties of ->> No auto-restart for scheduled automatic updates installations, and enable it. Let me be the first to say that yes, I am a little bit paranoid, and I think not without good reason: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ https://www.wired.com/2007/08/wiretap/
  20. Adobe today launched the latest version of its near ubiquitous Web video software, Adobe Flash Player 9. It's codenamed Moviestar, because it includes H.264 standard video support - the same standard deployed in Blu-Ray and HD-DVD high definition video players. Link to article "Adobe Extends Web Video Leadership With H.264 Support" http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Also check: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Adobe Launches "Moviestar" Version of Flash Player - HD Television Quality for Web Video http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ The player seems to be out now ... This is a sad statement: "... it is a higher quality audio, but at a lower bit rate." This is always the claim about new codecs, audio or video. Notice how nobody touts keeping the bitrate the same, and devoting the codec's advancement entirely to quality. It really doesn't matter. Flash 9 has been out for quite some time now, and yet the vast majority of flash video players online still use Flash 7. This is because 7 was the latest version for OSX and Linux until fairly recently, and the penetration of Flash 9 just isn't high enough yet. Anyway, seen as all the major sites still haven't moved their video technology to Flash 8 or Flash 9, it'll be years before we see widespread adoption of this new H.264 support. H.264 content is probably going to play too slow on my computer. Upgrading to at least a quad core CPU or better because it does not support hardware acceleration may not be an option for a while. I wonder if this version will have some kind of DRM support, as was rumored before. It sucks for consumers, but major players will not adopt without it.
  21. What happens if participants in a business meeting behave like Internet commenters? It's funny because it's so true. 90% of the comments people make in forums etc. would not be made in real life, where other people could (in theory at least) actually retaliate physically or at least identify the person making the comment. Warning: crude language. http://www.collegehumor.com/video/2563451/internet-commenter-business-meeting This is the same office that had that 'Lit - I'm Not Sick But I'm Not Well' home-made lip dub music video. It's even funnier if you happen to regularly look at http://www.collegehumor.com/ and their picture / video comments. Every single thread there is pretty much spot on with the video. Like when one guy goes "Why isn't my vote being counted?!!!!" That's about the collegehumor vote system that takes a while to update... All the comments on the votes go something like this: "Why isn't my vote being counted" "Hey, it didn't count my vote" Missing from the video are: - the guy who always points out stuff that the poster left out - the grammar Nazi - the guy who pulls out a Blendtec blender and starts shredding stuff up (will it blend?) Definition of "Pwned" http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=pwned A corruption of the word "Owned." This originated in an online game called Warcraft, where a map designer misspelled "owned." When the computer beat a player, it was supposed to say, so-and-so "has been owned." Instead, it said, so-and-so "has been pwned." It basically means "to own" or to be dominated by an opponent or situation, especially by some god-like or computer-like force. In Internet security jargon, to "pwn" means "to compromise" or "to control", specifically another computer (server or PC), web site, gateway device, or application; it is synonymous with one of the definitions of hacking. An outside party who has "owned" or "pwned" a system has obtained unauthorized administrative control of the system. What's interesting is that the term was one of 16 to appear on the 2006 "List of Words and Phrases Banished from the Queen's English for Misuse, Overuse and General Uselessness," released annually by Lake Superior State University. The slang term is now catching on in the vlogging or video blogging communities such as YouTube. In video blogging circles the word Pwn is being used in vlog wars. If an argument is won the winner is said to have Pwn'd his opponent.
  22. Take a look at: https://tinyapps.org/ "Small is beautiful" is their motto.
  23. Check out the method I'm describing in this article: http://forums.xisto.com/topic/93816-topic/?findpost=1064375345 When dealing with secure links (HTTPS) that method doesn't work, so you might need to download specialized software (I use EZ Save Flash and it has worked for me so far).
  24. It is very common that the only thing that doesn't work on a fresh Ubuntu install is the wireless. Here are easy, fool-proof instructions for how to get wireless working in Ubuntu 7.04 if it's not working because of the common bcm43xx problem. Requirements: 1) Ubuntu 7.04 installed 2) Internet access - on the same computer (maybe using a wired connection) or on another. http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ For wireless USB adapters, this is the best guide out there: https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=400236 The Trendnet TEW-429UB wireless USB key works with Ubuntu without any hassles. Here is a post from the Ubuntu forums that has a downloadable installer that will get your card working automatically. https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=405990 Alternative solution: cd ~wget http://ubuntu.cafuego.net/pool/feisty-cafuego/bcm43xx/bcm43xx-firmware_1.3-1ubuntu2_all.debsudo dpkg -i ./bcm43xx-firmware_1.3-1ubuntu2_all.debsudo rm ./bcm43xx-firmware_1.3-1ubuntu2_all.deb_________________________________ http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
