  1. Hello all,I need to upgrade a computer to increase its performance for image processing with adobe photoshop cs. The problem I have is because digital pro-images are quite large (12megapixel) the computer totally slow down when opening, aplying a modification,etc.. anything you do will take a long time. The actual computer is a AMD athlon 64 +3400 with 1Gb of RAM. Graphics card is nVidia 5200. Hardisk is SATA 7000rpm (seagate)What do you improve to achieve more performance for this kind of work?As this computer is not for gaming, I don't know if a better graphics card would help.More RAM will speed up anything? The CPU is ok? or it is too much slow ?As you can see, in hardware I'm plenty of doubts so any expert's advice will be appreciated.

  2. ... If you want more info I can get you more, or you can check out Nvidias website or ATI's website.

I will be grateful if you can show me more about this.
If I buy a SLI motherboard I could put two nVidia graphic cards working together? or the graphic cards need to be special ones? The graphic cards could be AGP or need to be PCI ?

I'll appreciate if you can give me some example to understand it better.

  3. Gaming mouses are made with a unique kind of shape

its like an "ergonomic" mouse you could say, designed to fit your palm much better then ordinary mouses

and these buttons are very small, here is a link Logitech® MXâ¢518 Gaming-Grade⢠Optical Mouse

in fact I think endurance is the strongest point for gaming mouses. Resolution also is higher than normal so movement is smoother. Mine (logitech G5) also have two buttons in it's top for increase/decrease the mouse resolution (dpi).

  4. Finally I managed to have one of these lens in my hand !They look great ! the VR option finally means they have an image stabilizer inside, so you can shoot by hand with slow shutter speeds and the picture do not get blurred. Also is quite huge, lens has a very wide diameter (72mm) and their fastest aperture is f:3.5Surely Nikon has hit the nail with this lens, but the worse part is the price.

  5. Here's what I've got so far:
    ASUS nVidia nForce4 SLI ATX
    2 x BFG Tech Geforce 7900GT 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card
    Cosair 2GB's of RAM
    Creative Sound Blaster Audigy2 ZS SB0350 7.1
AMD Athlon 64 3700+ San Diego 2000MHz HT

A bit pricey but I'm saving alot of money building it myself. Any thoughts on these choices?

2 x BFG ... you are saying you have two graphic cards working together to double the graphics power?

If it is, how is possible to do that? It is possible to do with any graphics card? or must be a special one?

I am VERY interested in this issue.

    Thanks to all.

  6. Not too long ago I bought a Canon Digital Rebel XT. It was my first SLR camera and I've been really pleased with what I've managed to do with it so far. I have the basic 18-55mm lens that came in the box and a very basic 75-300mm lens that I bought later on. I was wondering what to do I have to do (hardware wise) to take my photography to the next level? I was wondering about maybe experimenting with some filters. Heard polarizers were good. Also I was thinking about buying an inexpesinve ( <$150) Macro lens to get some interesting close up shots. So if anybody has any ideas or thoughts, they would be greatly appreciated

The very basic (and inexpensive) filters to have are:
    a Circular Polarizer and
    a Graduated Neutral Density filter.

Also spending money in a good tripod and a TTL flash are always a good investment.
Canon Digital Rebel is a good camera (in europe is sold as Canon 350D) and the lens kit is not bad at all.

Personally I have no experience with it, as all my equipment is Nikon, but one friend of mine have it and I saw spectacular photos made with it.

Don't worry too much with hardware and take photos. Some of the best fotos has been taken with non-pro cameras ! :D

  7. In fact I agree with all of you, above 4 or 5 megapixel is not needed unless you need large prints.
But what sparx said makes me think...

...I still maintain that only a digicam SLR with at least 8 megapixels and an exceptional lens will make me get rid of my existing Nikon FM manual SLR. Granted - the longer processing times for getting an image does get to me at times.
    ...

The camera manufacturers in short will no produce film cameras. Nikon has announced recently the discontinuation of all of their film cameras except F6.
In my opinion, nowadays there is no digital camera that can outperform film, but seems the marketing guys are doing a good job promoting digital products.

I'm afraid that in short, film will start to dissapear from commerces... so we can't load our film cameras anymore.

  8. With Photoshop you can correct anything from color quality and tonal range to altering the composition and sharpening the overall quality of your picture. By following these basic steps you can make improvements to your picture: - Make sure that yor scan quality is best for your images use. - The image should be cropped to the size you intend it to be when it is finished. - Adjust the contrast and tonal range of your picture. - Alter or remove any color contrasts. - Work on specific parts of your image to enhance highlights, middle tones, shadows and desaturated colors. - And sharpen the focus of your image overall.

  9. I'll bet for PS3. Always is the same history: Microsoft lauch first it's console and some people buy it because there is no competitors with its performance, but when new Sony's arrives, the Xbox practically dissapear from the stores.I'm not exagerating if I say that I don't know where I could buy a brand new Xbox now in my city. But if you want a PS2, go to any supermarket and here it is.

  10. Hi all !I need to put online a little shop and I am really a newbie in this.I have found a software called osCommerce, it is php based and is free also! What do you think about this software? is good enough ?Anybody know any other solution (freeware if possible) ?Is there any tutorial on how to put a store online and how to do easily ?I'm concerned about what could happen if someone steal information of customers of the shop's database. What things I need to have in mind about security ?I'm plenty of doubts, so I'll appreciate any suggestion.

  11. I may recommend you a very good book. Hope it work sfor you, it's very complete.
    C Programming
    Deitel/Deitel

Hope it works (it did for me years ago)

Also a book that worked for me was

    C programming
    Herbert Schildt

    it is from McGRAW-HILL editorial.

I learned C with this book a lot of years ago and still is my companion when a doubt come around ! :D

  12. Yuppie food. heh.
I like magnetic equilibrium and all, but I bet it costs way more than it needs to. If it costed like 10 bucks I'd buy it though. I'm suprised the magnetism doesn't mess up the screen.

Also if you have magnetic sensitive devices around like floppy disks or maybe a microdrive (used in digital cameras and MP3 players) it could be a very big problem because all data in this devices will be corrupted.
In fact if your computer is very near, their hardisk could be adversely affected too.

  13. Hi !I just buyed a new LCD monitor to replace my old CRT monitor. The new monitor have two conection options: VGA and DVI. Now I have it connected to VGA, because my graphic card do not have the DVI conection.I don't know if image quality will change between VGA and DVI. If I buy a new graphics card with DVI output I will see any quality improvement? The graphics card I have now is a nVidia 5200 so in fact I am not needing more graphics performance and if I buy a new one will be only for the DVI output feature. Do you spend the money for DVI ? :D

  14. It's quite simple. There are several chip makers, but the 2 biggest are ATI and nVidia. What they do is just creating the GPU (like, for example, the NV350 wich is an ATI Radeon9600PRO).
Now, they sell those chips to different companies who put those chips on a PCB, together with memory and all other stuff needed to have a videocard and then they sell it.

Now, ATI also sells it's own cards, but those are the most 'stock' cards available from ATI. nVidia does not sell cards and let other companies do this.

Why they do that? More companies that sell cards means more diversity (memory configuration, cooling, ...) and better concurrency (and broken cards go to the companies and not directly to ATI & nVidia, wich also saves a lot of time and money)

I always have the same doubt. In fact there are only two technologies of graphic cards: nVidia and ATI , but what is better ?
There are any substancial diference between them? Despite of the different model of cards of course, I mean if you compare two similar cards but one nVidia and the other ATI... what will be the key to make a decission? :D

  15. Who actually has a gaming mouse, or a mouse designed with the concept of gaming involved.
    To start i have a LogitechÂŽ MXâ˘518 Gaming-Grade⢠Optical Mouse

Its pretty sweet, costed my dad around $40 since it was my birthday present.
It has a button above and below the scroll wheel, that adjust sensitivity.

It also has a button a little farther up that acts as the *alt-tab* combination in windows, to switch between applications.

It also has a forward and back buttons on side for browsers and other stuff that can use it.

From a gaming standpoint though it supports up to 1600-dpi ( i run it on 800-dpi because 1600 is too much for me ).

It also has some sort of boosted data rate for the USB and graphics rate. In all its pretty sweet.

So what kind of mouse do you guys play with?

Currently I am using the Logitech G5 Laser Mouse. I know it is a gaming grade mouse, but I really use it for programming and desktop applications. :P

I'm working a lot of hours in front of the computer and I buyed this because my previous mouse ( a 50$ microsoft optical mouse ) died after several months of use. In fact the left button do not click anymore. Microsoft said it was not mouse construction defect, the problem was I used the mouse a lot and it get old in only few months. What an answer, no ? :D

Returning about the logitech G5 mouse, this is a pretty beast. The optical part is now laser and by the way you can't see any red light at the bottom. It seems to be a infrared laser or something like this, because I can't see the laser beam at all. But surely it is there because the mouse works and performs very very good and smooth. I have the corded version because I prefer corded mouses in the fact they are lighter than wireless as they do not need to carry the battery. As a curiousity, the mouse case construction is the same (wired or wireless) and in the wired version a plastic box that fits in the battery place is included. Also some weighted pieces are suppied to put in this box and adjust the mouse weight to your personal feelings.
