  1. If you use Outlook Express as your email, client you can automatically forward your mail to your local computer.Just go to Tools > Accounts and set it up as your would any other email account. You will still need to move your email to a local folder on your machine if you want to save very much of it.
  2. Just a found a PhotoShop tutorial site that is new to me. It's in a forum version and has a lot of really interesting tutorials. I'm always looking to expand my Photoshop skills. If you'd like to check it out visit the forum.
  3. Hey Guys, Coming up April 5th is a special day for web standards. Dustin Diaz, who's blog about web standards I regularly read, is promoting everyone to take their CSS off their site for one day. What's the idea? As you probably know, there are many browsers that are not CSS compliant or at least don't read CSS the same as others. By completely removing your CSS you'll get a quick head's up about just how accessible and attractive your site is. Go and sign up. It'll be fun. It'll bring some unexpected traffic to your site. And, you just may learn something!!
  4. I guess I didn't understand what was meant when you were looking for examples. Good job, Quatrux! When my SSI (server side includes) menues on my old site didn't show up just now when I uploaded it to my new ASTAHosting site, I was reminded of another great use for the .htaccess file.SSI will only show on a page that has the .shtml extension UNLESS you add the following lines of code to your .htaccess file:AddHandler server-parsed .htmlAddHandler server-parsed .htmAddHandler server-parsed .shtmlActually, you don't need all of them just to handle SSI but I always add them because then all HTML page extensions are covered and show up when added to your site.
  5. Well, it's still the same story with AWStats this morning but maybe I'm jumping the gun. I'll give it a day or so and see if it straightens itself out unless someone has a clue what the error message means.
  6. Hi Guys, New to hosting here and SO HAPPY especially to see that you have AWStats. Had them at my old host and they are terrific! Can't believe how many features are offered here for FREE hosting However, I didn't have to configure my AWSTATS at my old host so I don't know how. When I try to access the stats, I get the following error message: What do I need to do to use this wonderful tool on my site?
  7. Unfortunately, you did not give us the keyword that you optimized your site for nor the url of your site.It is not difficult to get to the top of Google for obscure or little used keywords. However, if you want to stay at the top, even for those keywords, you had better offer your visitors some quality content.Google has also become very aware of "link-farm" links and are rapidly weeding those sites for their results and sometimes banning the sites entirely. It's true that relavant links do count and help your placement in all search engines but there is some talk that too many links too fast will actually hurt your placement on Google.
  8. My computer repair guy ordered a bunch of these cd's from ubuntu and now gives them away to anyone he can talk into trying Linux. He gave me both the Install CD and the Live CD so I could try it without installing it. I tried it and I love it! I'm going to do a dual boot install this week and I'll bet I'm a Linux convert by the end of the month!
  9. If you rename the ftvpg1.html to index.html I believe it will show up. If it does not, you will need to turn your index back on for that folder.
  10. I worked at one time for an endodontist and this is the program that we started with: Dental Software It is still relatively inexpensive ($99USD) and includes the source code so it is easy to modify. The program is based on MS-Access but could easily be converted to another database system if you desired. I don't know what changes have been done to the software in the past 4 years or so but I did have to modify it significantly for the practice that I worked at. I added several other tables to the database and was creating an online appointment interface when I changed jobs. If you don't have experience with databases, it may be easier for you to modify this program than to start out with nothing. You will be able to easily see how the different table and screen interfaces are created and inter-relate. If you want to have an online interface for your patients to make their own appointments I would suggest converting it to MySql as it is an easy interface to learn and there is a lot of free support available online.
  11. I recently updated Firefox, my favorite browser. Now, it will not install the flash player. Didn't notice if it was when Adobe picked up Macromedia or if it's the Firefox update.Anyone else having similar problems?
  12. I started learning programming with Python simply because it came installed on my computer. It is a fairly easy programming language to learn and you can easily pick up another language from there. I also found an excellent tutorial for Python when I was learning it and that really helped. There are tutorials for about any language you choose to learn available free online. Here is the Python tutorial that I think highly of: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
  13. Thanks abundantly!!The boot.ini file was the problem although not quite one of those that you suggested but you got me looking in the right direction. Your assistance is much appreciated by the old grandma.
  14. Probably not in the right forum ... but, help!I have a compaq presario with XP home.Yesterday, I followed some lame link and this morning all my .dll files are skewed.I tried downloading and installing the missing .dll's but that didn't solve my problem so I am now attempting a "non-destructive" (yeah, right!) recovery. My system uses 6 CD's for recovery disks. I have six sets of disks (another story). Anyway, none of the sets will get me through a complete recovery. It always hangs up at one place or another, most often on Disk 3 at about 42 percent finished. If I attempt to boot from the hard disk, it now tells me that hal.dll is missing.Any clues what might be causing the problems? Thanks in advance.
  15. Hello Everyone,Having been on the Internet for four years, I can't say that I'm a newbie anymore. However, I sure haven't learned as much as I wanted to in that time. What I have learned:HTMLDHTMLCSSPHP (sort of)PhotoshopPSPI am so glad that I've found this forum because I see there is plenty of help here for the rest of what I need to know!!!On a personal note, I am a retired carny who now has a construction company with an online presence. I am also a farmer and a grandma to 6 wonderful kids.I won't be a lot of help in the gaming sections unless you're looking for help playing pinochle or poker but, hey, I'm willing to learn I'm looking forward to getting to know a few people in the forum but that's quite enough babbling from an old lady for now.
  16. They have invented a new polyester fabric that disables the effects of Taser guns. If you're planning a bank robbery or some other shenanigan, you might want to look into this new technology. Of course, the say that they are only going to sell it to the "good guys" but it always seems that the "bad guys" find a way to get their hands on it just about as fast
  17. I use Xenu's Link Sleuth. No only does it find all the broken links but you can configure any links that you don't want it to include. Then, it will build a complete report for you that you can save. This is a great help if you have a site with many links on it. The program is free and can be found here: Xenu
  18. There are many template that you can adapt to Mambo, in fact almost any that you find. There are also several designed especially for Mambo or Joomla which is an off-shoot of Mambo. You may find a free one that you like at one of these sites if you haven't already found one. http://www.mamboteam.com/ http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ http://www.mambotemplates.com/ http://www.mambohut.com/ Many of the better templates however are not free. I like several of the Mambo templates featured here: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Unfortunately, I don't quite understand your other question. What is it exactly that you are wanting to do? Oops, I didn't see that this was an old post. Sorry.
  19. Wow, thanks especially for the "Clear Type". What a world of difference.Old eyes really need this one.
  20. I'm one who uses both AVG Free and Panda Titanium, which I pay for.I used to use Norton because it came installed on my new computer but I didn't like it because it was hard to configure with my Anti Spyware programs which I also use. And, I just didn't personally find it easy to use.My Panda is the greatest. Has firewall, antispyware and even detects viruses before they are defined. If you pay for 3 years at a time, it is very reasonable as well.
  21. There is also a fun (sort of) typing game at Yahoo Games called Typer Shark. You have to look under the Word Games section for it.I used it to get my typing speed back up when I wanted to apply for a new job where I knew there would be a test. Your typing speed during the game will not really reflect your average typing speed because a part of the game is typing numbers and symbols which are not really included in most typing tests. However, it is good practice for general typing and, as I said, almost fun.
  22. Creating a custom error page without PHP You can easily create your own custom error pages by making an .htaccess file Now, here is the code to put that .htaccess file to work: Custom error pages make your site look professional and also encourage your visitors to stay on your site and look for what ever it is they wanted. You can make a custom error page for any kind of error as long as you know it's number. These are some of the most common errors: 401 - Authorization Required 400 - Bad request 403 - Forbidden 500 - Internal Server Error 404 - Wrong page To add a custom error page for a page not found, for example, you would need to first create the custom page and upload it to your site. In this example, I'll call the page "oops.html". If you want it to work for all your directories, you should install it in your root directory. Then you add the following line of code to your .htaccess file: ErrorDocument 404 /oops.html Then you would upload the .htaccess file to your root directory also. You could also put all of your custom error pages in another directory, say, for example "errors", but then you would need to indicate the path to the directory in your .htaccess file: ErrorDocument 404 /errors/oops.html I hope this little tutorial helps someone. I'll be back later to add some other neat things you can do with an .htaccess file. Notice from szupie: Partly from http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
  23. I had more Firefox favorites before the last Firefox upgrade but here are my current favorites that I've not seen already mentioned in this thread:DOM InspectorView Formatted SourceBlog ThisImage ZoomGoogle ToolbarI am really hoping that they come up with an upgrade for my Roboform toolbar soon. I really miss it.I also really liked the Edit CSS extension as it is a great help when you are just learning CSS. You could edit your CSS file for the page and watch it change right before your eyes. Anxiously awaiting an update for this handy extension.
