  1. I would say go with Mandriva. That was my first distro (well it was Mandrake 9.0, but close enough) and it was VERY user friendly. After you get your feet wet with Mandriva, you'll most definately want to grow out of it since it isn't exactly getting to the true essense of Linux. Then after that I would recommend SUSE, FC4, or Slackware. This is my own two cents, here is a link to read the different reviews about the distros out there. But for a newbie to Linux, Mandriva is a great start to make sure you don't get scared off. http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
  2. That is a common misconception about Java. True that you will never have to use C-like points like -> to access them, but behind the scenes Java is FILLED with pointers. Google around the topic about Java and Pointers and you'll read better stuff than I could ever explains. But it is true, Java has pointers, just not what you would expect to be pointers.
  3. That's an option, but I would also have to make sure each computer has Java Web Start installed on it which is separate from the basic Java Runtime Environment.
  4. Here's what my Main.java file looks like right now. It used to be just a one liner that called another class which did all the work. When I launch this through my web browser I'm getting an NoClassDef Error. Also if I am creating an Applet using Eclipse as my IDE can I still compile it and launch the program from there as if it were a normal application? import javax.swing.*; // for JApplet and swing componentsimport java.awt.event.*; // for ActionListenerpublic class Main extends JApplet implements ActionListener { public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) { init(); } public void init() { // Launch Tracking_GUI Tracking_GUI window = new Tracking_GUI(); window.show(); }}
  5. What you want to be researching is how to "bridge" the two wireless routers without any physical cables. I've done this before where I want to extend the range of my in home router, and I happened to have an extra wireless router available. Depending on who makes your router, it could be easy or easier. Look into your manual if you still have it, and probably should be in the index.
  6. I love playing FF3 on SNES, yea I'm sure I'll get flamed because I didn't put what the "real" number is in Japan, but this is how I know it.Sooooooooooooo, many playable characters and the game is long and interesting. Except for the part where you kinda run out of things to do, and just spend 10 hours just leveling. Other than that, I love this game.
  7. Do you have a lot of PCI devices? (i.e. modem, ethernet card). I have a problem before when the computer would randomly shutdown and restart. After some debugging, I found that it was because Windows XP wasn't comptatible with my WinFax Modem. Go figure something called WinFax not working correctly with Windows.But anyway if you do have PCI devices. Start taking them out one by and one, and see if it still happens. I resolved the whole issue by actually purchasing a new modem because there weren't any drivers for the current modem. Hopefully you won't have to spend money on that.Good luck

  9. Just keep in mind that have CUPS running doesn't neccessarily mean that your printer will work under Linux. Some printers like Lexmark and I think Dell just WILL NOT work under Linux. You might want to check this out before going through all the trouble just to get CUPS working.
  10. I like playing the old classics on my Palm like Snake and Tetris.I tried getting an emulator for it, but they never worked. I was getting excited to play Mario Bros anywhere I go.I got a Palm TX by the way.
  11. I don't remember if GMail stopped with the invitations, but if you do get one, then definately sign up.Its got a huge amount of space to store stuff other than e-mails. There are even tweaks for it to turn into a file storage system if you have Windows. You can access it just like another drive on your computer. Just search on Google for something called "GMail FS" which is the Gmail file system.Also if you are looking for a e-mail to use as your "fake" e-mail then GMail definately has its uses. I think I have about 4 GMail accounts for various reasons. I log into them about once per every couple months.A while ago there was a security exploit for GMail that some teenager found out. Since it is HTML based web messages that are sent out, you could embedd malicious Javascript to do some harm to the computer. Obviously I'm sure Google resolved this issue. Just be wary of something so good that something so simple could damage it.
  12. Thanks for the suggestions. I still have some tweaks to figure out in my program, then I'll start trying to turn it into a Web App. The thing is I only have a couple more weeks left at my job because its just an internship. So either it turns into a Web App or I'll just throw an executable on the intranet site.I'd only have to fool around with the main file because its only a one liner which calls another class which does all the work.
  13. Atari, I don't know the numbers after, but it was the classic one with joysticks and pong and stuff. (My older sister had it)NES, old school Gameboy, SNES (given to by a cousin), PS2, and most recently Gamecube.How about you?
  14. To add to my obsession with Mega Man, I ended up buying The MegaMan X Collection and MegaMan X: Command Mission for Gamecube (which I recently bought because it's now only $100).I knew what I was getting with The MegaMan X Collection...a bunch of jumping and shooting, but I already knew that since I'm a die hard Mega Man fan. But MegaMan X: Command Mission threw me a curveball.I never read anything about it prior to purchasing it, I only bought it since it was a newer MegaMan game. It's kind of like when a new Mario and Zelda game comes out, you just buy it because its there. To my surprise its an RPG. Something I wasn't used to at all with a title like MegaMan. After playing for a few hours, I was actually impressed. For a title to come from basic jumping and shooting to a pretty decent RPG (it got a 8.4/10 in IGN's website) is a huge turnaround. It was nothing like Final Fantasy or any other well known RPG, but it was well worth the buy.My kudos goes out to the boys at Capcom to bring new life to my childhood obsession. Now I have something to hold me over until they decide to do a MegaMan FPS...that will be the day!
  15. I found a free massively multiplayer online role playing game. The install is pretty big, but the game runs great even on my laptop. Pentium M 1.6 gHz, 512mb of ram, and 64mb video memory. The game is at http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ For a free game, it is really good. A lot of pointing and clicking, but there are a lot of other people playing too which suprised me. I just spent 4 hours leveling up my character and running around areas where other people were killing monsters much higher than my level (and picking up items).
  16. I have this Java Application that is already coded which interacts with a database. Is there any way that would be easy enough to launch this application via a local intranet? It is not in any Applet package, but I do have the JARs. Can this be done without too much effort?
  17. I like KDE a lot better than GNOME. KDE has more bells and whistles, and in my opinion it just looks better overrall...from a visual standpoint.KDE and GNOME are great window managers, but if you like to look at pretty things, KDE is the way to go.
  18. I was always good at this game for Gamecube, but recently I want to see how good I am amongst other good players. So I went out and actually bought a Gamecube (I didn't own one previously) and the game, and now I'm reading all this stuff about advanced tactics and techniques.I mainly play as Yoshi and Falco. I was already good without the advanced tactics, but now that I know them, I'm starting to incorporate them into my regular play. Its like relearning how to play the whole game again. I have to stop doing some bad habits and start doing new stuff.Post here if you play SSB:M, and play at an high level.I'm actually going to go to a tournament this Saturday to check out "elite" players. And I want to enter into the MLG (Major League Gaming) event in NYC and Philadelphia. Most likely I'll get seriously owned, but I really want to see if I can hold my own.
  19. What are your thoughts on the news of the PS3 costing nearly $900 alone just for the parts? https://www.engadget.com/ I think Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo are trying to do way to much with a gaming console by turning it into something that it shouldn't be...an over priced computer. The XBOX 360 costs costs $300-400 depending on the model you buy, and Microsoft loses $150 or so in profit just to make one. Sony will have to be selling the PS3 around the same price range, so Sony will just end of eating more of the cost. Since when was it a good business strategy to lose profit on each sale? How much technology can be pumped into these newer consoles before people start to realize that its literally just not worth the money. Game developers are getting scared of these costs as well and are veering away some console systems. You can't be making much money if you are banking on developers to bring you a profit when they don't want anything to do with your system. Or maybe I'm just getting too old for games (I'm only 20).
  20. I don't know of any off the top of my head, but search around SourceForge.net (it's an opensource software site). Look for terms like music conversion or mp3 utility.SourceForge is a great place to find decent (and free) software to meet basic needs without dishing out $30 here and there to get liscenses.
  21. I was going to post this in the Gaming Boards, but I really think this has more to do with Computer Talk than Gaming. Recently my one friend, "hacked" his XBOX to allow it to become a Media Center computer. Through an exploit from Mech Assault for XBOX, he can run executable code from a Memory Card. Home brew developers created a easy to follow walkthrough to load OS-like software to the XBOX that turns it into a real easy to navigate Media Center. We can stream video, music, and photos from the computers on our LAN and download from the internet. I haven't seen lag affect the quality of the video at all, and we have DVD quality movies that we watch from it. I don't remember the exact link to the website where he got all the software from and the walkthrough, but I'm sure if you Google "xbox media center" or "xbox home brew", you'll find it sooner or later. I only have a PS2 and I was thinking about doing the same thing. Of course the PS2 doesn't have the processor power of XBOX, but it should be pretty fun to test out. I just need to grab a 200gig IDE hard drive for the expansion slot, something to hook PS2 memory cards up to my computer, and the network adapter which I already have. If you are interested in turning your PS2 into something more than just a game console, then here's a link that will give you a good start. http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ There are software packages that will basically turn your PS2 into a Linux-Like console. You'll have all the development languages, network capabilities, and everything else your geeky little heart desires.
  22. Try the same mouse and keyboard on another computer. If it works fine then the problem lies with your computer, if not then the problem is the mouse and keyboard.
  23. 1. You should be able to set width. textarea1.setWidth(some number); 2. I don't think you can get just a row in the text area, since getText() will return the entire string. But you can break up the giant string into the rows by some simple string manipulation. You'll probably want to find an escape key such as "\n" in the string which would be the same as a return character. If you need help on the stringl manipuation then post again. 3. Hmmm, the only way I can think of would be to have some error checking function after you hit submit. Which would count the number of characters in the whole text area. Taking what you have from my answer in #2 this should be pretty easy. if (row1.length >= 4) { //pop up box to indicate warning }
  24. Star Ocean is pretty good. I've only played a few hours into it, but I like it so far. Its a real-time RPG, so if you don't like that then you might not like this.
  25. I like using MySQL for my own development while on Linux. Just real easy to use. However Corporate America is in love with Oracle and more or less DB2. I want to start using those just to be familar with it.I have aspirations to possibly be doing database administration or database software development. I have no problems managing a database, tweaking it up, backing up, all that stuff DBAs have to worry about. But I think the software development with a database backbone would be more for me. I did that before at a job I worked at as a co-op, it was fun stuff. I learned so much stuff there.
