One of the biggest problems I have with some Web sites, whether professional or personal, is that some people go nuts with graphics. Not everybody has a super-high-speed connection. And even those of us who *do* have good access don't necessarily want to see half a gig's worth of images loading. (Okay, that's an exaggeration but you get the idea.)That and Flash intros. Most designers put in a "skip intro" option because, oops, we don't care about it and want to get to the actual content. Many of the intros are very pretty and skillfully done, but I skip them anyway. They're unnecessary and don't bring me any closer to the real reason I'm visiting a site.*steps off soapbox*Okay. *grins* I'm done.

The "What's So Bad About Microsoft?" article is in a word fascinating. *grins* I already know that Microsoft is evil incarnate ... but I wasn't overly familiar with their vaporware scam.Excellent post - thanks for the info.

In addition to what ganeshn11 said (excellent advice by the way): you just promoted your site for free by asking Xisto forum members for suggestions. Spreading word-of-mouth information about your site via forums is a good way to attract attention, as you just did.But remember not to spam forums and to bring up your site in relevant threads and sub-forums.I've also heard that craigslist.org is a good place to post various notices. You might want to check them out to see if it's worth a shot.You can also include the URL in your e-mail signature. That works pretty well, especially if you send lots of e-mails like most of us do *smiles*

You know ... this would be great if I actually paid any attention to my boot screen. I'm rarely even at the computer when it's booting up - mainly because I'm one of those people who can only sit still when I'm actively doing something, whereas staring at a boot screen just drives me insane.But I'm in the minority, so there are probably a lot of other people who would really enjoy this *grins*

911 text messaging sounds like a good idea to me - for the most part, and in specific situations, of course. If there's any way that I can have a spoken conversation with emergency services, I'm going to go that route because it's faster and easier. For me, anyway. I don't text at 60+ WPM like some people *grins*

Yeah - what abhiram said about a short circuit.I would whack the keyboard a few times on the edge of the desk - not too hard, mind you - before going to eBay with it, just to see if I could fix the problem. Then again, I wonder how much money one could get for listing a keyboard that shuts down the computer when you hit the Caps Lock key? I bet a whole group of pranksters would all see that listing and start a bidding war just so they'd have something new and wholly entertaining to do in the office *grins*

Baseball's my favorite sport. Period. I love hockey and football too, but baseball is IT as far as I'm concerned.So of course I'm super-happy because the pro season is underway and the Texas Rangers are actually hovering somewhere close to .500. (Despite their horrible, horrible first week or so.)I've been a Rangers fan since I was a tiny little summer-leage ball player and I'll keep cheering for them even though they stink and will never, ever win a pennant - at least not while I'm alive to see it.Then again, a lot of people said the exact same thing about Boston (another team I've liked for years). AHHH! The "You need to restart now" thing that recurs ever 10 minutes! It's like ... it's like this super-annoying mother figure who's trying to get me out of bed when I'm not in the mood to get up and go to school. It's all, "You have to do this. I'm going to bother you until you do it. I know what's best for you. Neat idea - not worth over $300 to me, but I can think of plenty of people who would use something like this. Judging by the photo, it looks like the text is SUPER-huge, so older people with failing vision - like my grandma - probably wouldn't have any problems reading even the stock pages in the newspaper with this. Sweet.

Ask other Web site designers in your area about their rates. You can get a pretty good idea of what your market will bear from their answers. Getting an idea of what the going rate is will keep you from undercharging for your services - and from overcharging, which would chase off potential customers.Good luck with your venture *grins* Be sure to let us know how it's going from time to time.

I'd rather just let Xisto deal with all the technical-side things, like keeping hackers out and maintaining server uptime *grins*But I can see how this is an attractive option for people who have the time and resources available to dedicate to the task.

I use Times New Roman. My site's pretty much nothing but written content, so I figured I should just go ahead and go with one of the most popular fonts for print publications. Why not, right? *grins*I also make the text fairly large. One thing that I loathe is going to a Web site specifically for its written content only to be stuck trying to read twenty long paragraphs that are all encoded with a 9-point font. Especially when the Web designer decides to do something super-cheesy, like change the text color to green but keep a white background.

I'm lazy. I have a LiveJournal account. It's set to friends-only because I mainly use it to keep up with my relatives - and a few friends - who don't live near me.I've heard good things about WordPress, but I can't testify to that one way or another. The advantage to that, of course, being that you can put it directly onto your own Web site instead of having to link from your site to livejournal or Xanga or whatever other blog site you choose.

It sounds like Opera's devlopers are putting thought into their latest release. More than what can be said for *cough* Microsoft's IE team *grins*But still ... I'm a huge Firefox fan, so I probably won't be checking this out anytime soon. It's nice, though, that Opera fans have something new to use.

Wow, that's probably the worst video-game-related name I've ever heard. Ever. I'm with all the other people who are thinking of really bad jokes when they hear "Wii." Sheesh. If you have to explain how the stupid name is supposed to be pronounced, you need to change the name.I liked "Revolution." It's a little long, but fits the system pretty well.Nintendo can forget about me buying one of these systems.

Interesting how some of the IE add-ons require a fee. I bet Microsoft puts all of the halfway-decent add-ons in that category - along with all the ones that actually work *grins*

There's a surgical adhesive that replaces sutures and staples. I heard a while back (a couple of years ago or something like that) that this could become a common option for surgery on humans. I don't know if this is actually being used on people yet, but I know that we're giving it a try with animals.My brother's female cat came back from the vet a couple of weeks ago with adhesive instead of dissolving sutures over her incision (bro. had her spayed). As did my Mom's cat, who went in that same day.Unfortunately, the adhesive didn't work very well. Both cats had to go back in last week and have staples put in becaue the incisions opened up again.My thinking is that if you do that with a human, you can tell that person to sit still and not run around or do any other crazy things that will cause the site to re-open. But try getting a very active kitten to listen to that!

Yeah - reconnecting the spinal cord would be the big problem, I would think - like some other posters have said.But my first question after reading the original post was, "Man, how much would it suck to wake up from that transplant surgery and have some other guy's memories?" *smiles*

It looks a lot better when put against the intended background - i.e. the second link you gave. Good job.The colors blend pretty well from the Web site's background to your logo. But maybe there's a little too much white, especially around the left side of the neck? It just seems a little blinding to me.

If Sony can put out a solid PS3 system - no major bugs or problems - right from the start, then they'll have a big advantage over the 360.Then again: if Microsoft doesn't concentrate on getting a better selection of games, they're going to have problems anyway once PS3 drops. That was what I really liked about the PS2: you had so, so many titles available, and they were good about rushing to make the most popular games cheaper.

Apple's trying to make its computers more popular. It seems to me that, if this succeeds, there will be more reason for virus writers and other malicious programmers to target Mac operating systems.

*drools*Oh man - if I got my hands on a HD that big I would then start spending insane amounts of money on new CDs just because I'd have so much free space to fill up with MP3s.Yeah, I think I'll stick with my 30G for now *grins*
