The throughout analysis is probably a low-level formatting. It makes the bad sectors unused during the OS formatting. But it cannot predict when the disk will fail.So is there a way of testing the drive to see the amount of life it has left? I'm just curious because i had a browse on our local ebay and saw some people selling hard-drives with an approximation of hours left... all the drives do work, i just thought there could be some special programs that can do a thorough analysis on hard-disks or something
Of course, some electronics attached to smart disk devices can give predictive results, knowing the average lifetime of such disks, but I'm pretty sure this cannot be an accurate value.
After three years, any electro-mechanical device can fail at any time. Statistically, you may be lucky and use the disk during a very long time, but it can also last only some hours.

Just be careful on a small detail. Acronis, as other system backup softwares, create a backup image on your current system. This backup is designed for being reinstalled one the same computer. In most of cases it will not boot on a different computer (different processor, different devices). If your second computer is not exactly the same as the first one, you should not choose a backup/restore method, you should stick to fresh install methods.

I would first see if the disk can be used. I would connect it to a computer, and try to create a partion, copy a couple of gigs on it and simply use the Crosoft Windows disk verification tool.

Ha-Ha! I just lost my motherboard, will have to buy a new one, let's see if the current Windows will boot on my next motherboard.

Hi, Orgaralnum, welcome aboard.

OK, but think about the following : with standard USB cables, we are familiar with plugging and unplugging a cable at any time, at any end.yea but in practical i think a couple of microUSB ports should be sufficient
With the micro-usb cables, you have to always be careful plugging the small end first, the big plug secondly. Because the big side has a big plug, correctly guided inside the socket. And the small-end plug is smaller, less correctly guided, and has to be plugged when there is no current inside, until each contact is correctly fitting the corresponding side in the device. Else, while inserting the small edge connector, you can touch the wrong electrode and, if the other side is connected, call too much power from the USB outlet of your PC, draining more power than your PC main power supply can offer.

@wutske : you're right, your exemple is nicer, seems rather clear and makes me want to learn html. Each tag type telling his usage is the perfect way to demonstrate it.

I even had a PC powerdown while inserting the micro-USB on my webcam : short-circuit on the USB outlet! This was very stupid from this manufacturer, because at that moment plugging an external webcam was a very frequent action, so having a micro-usb entry allowing short-circuits was very surprising.Since they are much smaller, they are also more fragile; think about the many times you've inserted the cable the wrong way around

Correct. Or maybe we should use PFOL, because your location is "MyComputer", and my location is "MyComputertoo"so its the language that makes the acronym different... well that means in my mother language, it would be PFOL - Pule'anga Fakatahataha 'O Lusia
i think USSR should be the version used in conversations here because its an English language forum hehe

URSS="Union des Républiques Socialistes Soviétiques"didn't know that...
SSSR="Sovietski Saioust Socialistki Republiki"
USSR= "Union of Soviets Socialist Republics"
A lot of acronyms for the same concept, we should kindly accept each name as designing this concept, independly from our opinion concerning each guy or each government.

Plain text, are you sure? It's not plain text on my firefox screen, when I log to my cpanel, it displays big dots instead of letters. And also ftp in the Microsoft windows "cmd" command-line screen displays no password. How do you connect?

you are right, we are changing slowly. Could this be seen as a "step" toward a future evolution? Not sure. However, we are changing. Our children are taller than our fathers. Some tens years ago, old people were small and slim, today old people are fat. Something is changing in the way we react toward our environment. And maybe some of the genetic changes will be driven by the last nuclear accidents.

Great tuto, infotronix. However, two things could lead to discussion.First of all, if you use your home PC as a server, you don't need a ftp client.Secondly, there are some discussions on the forum concerning the idea of using your home computer as a web server. For instance, a standard home internet connection does not have enough banwidth for sustaining the traffic, your should have a professional internet connection, which could cost more than renting a hosting server from a webhosting provider.

There seem to be a network problem. Open a ticket to Xisto - Support.

These guys say that their nlite is for windows7 : http://www.windows7download.com/win7-nlite/download-jypqkssn.htmlAnd these guys http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/139077-7customizer-a-windows-7-customization-and-deployment-tool/ say that you should use 7custimizer. Make your own opinion... If you are familiar with nlite, you should first try it. And of course, the best one seems to be RT seven lite, http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
RT Se7en Lite is developed by Rockers Team to customize windows 7 operating system and to make it lite. You can add wallpapers, Icons, themes, integrate updates, drivers, language packs, applications, remove components, enable or disable features, unattended installation settings, bootable ISO and USB creator , etc. It will be very easy to operate and changing the style of your windows 7 operating system. That's the horrible point with Linux. It installs the X graphics once while installing the OS, then the changes are really horrible.I'm pretty sure that there is a menu somewhere saying something like "install the X-Windows environment", try it, it should ask you all questions concerning display, mouse and keyboard, this would re-install the suitable drivers for the new display.

No mystery. Like a lot of professional-type services, you have to pay for it. They let you try it for free, and as soon as you see it meets all your needs you start paying for it.The service seems to be good but there is one big limitation. There is some credit system (that I don't fully understand yet)m which limits the sending capacity of a new user to 50 messages. I don't know whether you have to pay for more messages or there is some other criteria but the fact remains that the service is limited.
I love that way of advertising. Let me try the full thing for a limited period of time, if I like it I pay, if I don't like it costs me nothing.

If you are on a Windows system and if you are not familiar with WAMP installations, I would suggest you to try easyphp. You find it here : http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/i need to install in my computer (localhost) server(xampp)

Got it!It works with Word 2010 full version. You go to view, new window, it opens the same document in a new window. It works also with the Word viewer. It does not work with Word 2010 starter edition, which is a limited version of the full product.

And we are familiar with using our current hard drives during five to ten years. Let's see if SSD users will be able to use their drives during ten years, with the full capacity available.
-
it works fine, you change something in the first window and you see in the second window that is has been changed too.Though I don't know the answer to @manuleka's problem, but I am wondering how is saving of the document managed when multiple instances are open at once. I mean will the whole document be saved (all changes made in all instances) when ctrl+s is pressed in any of the open windows or just the part open in the respective window will be saved. it is kind of confusing for me.....
Seems that this Office2000/Office2003 feature disapeared in office 2010, or I have to learn it again.

The 500 000 hours have to be compared to the 10 000 read/write lifetime of the SSD disk.mechanical hard drives are usually advertised with less lifespan (~ 500,000 hours) than ssd (~ 2,000,000 hours), one of my friends bought an intel SLC SSD couple of years ago and he said the trick to keep the drive last longer is to make sure it doesn't go pass the ~55% usage mark...
So, the SSD disk will not die because of mechanical failure, it will die bye loss of read/write ability, 10000 times is nothing compared by the standard current disk which performe about 100 read/write operations per second.

What do you mean by "they seem to last OK" ? A standard magnetic disk last several years, sometimes about ten years. I'm not sure that an intensively write/erase SSD disk will last ten years, I expect that the usable stoarage will shrink to almost nothing after less than three years.so what's the average lifetime of an SSD? i have a lot of friends who uses SSD and they seem to last ok, well i haven't heard any of them saying that they have issues with their drives so far... all they say is the performance boost is quite noticeable compared to the plater drives
Hower, this is only a bet towards future, let's see how your friend's disks will behave during the next few years.

Standard Windows formatting, write some gigs, and then a standard windows disk verification.
