  2. Why not? However, from an architectural point of view, a server is a machine dedicated to be accessed from remote, with a lot of network bandwidth and disk throughput.I guess you will never find a Mac machine with 70 NIC's and a few thousand disks, but this is very common on real servers with a lot of simultaneous users.
Typically, a server has some hundred simultaneous users, and a workstation has mainly one user.
On a server you don't need a nice graphic adapter because this is not the main goal of this system.
On a mac you do a lot of graphics, the graphics has to be efficient. Moreover on a gaming PC who will never have one hundred disks but is very efficient for shooting games or for animated landscapes.

Dude, I'm sure you can find something like the XServe to be something that a lot of users will access to and grab resources off of. I know there are credit card companies that uses MacOS X XServes to handle credit card transactions.

  3. In half of language you have translate to "Happy Holiday" and in other half you have translate to "Happy Christmas" ;)
    In french :
    bonnes vacances (" happy vacations/holidays ")
joyeuses fĂŞtes (" happy celebrations/holidays ") ( new year and christmas)
joyeux noĂŤl (" happy christmas ")
bonne annĂŠe (" happy new year ")
    ;)

lol, i know, but in English, at least in Canada, it's proper to say happy holidays. However, in Quebec and other French speaking communities, it's Merry Christmas is the proper term.

  4. There are indeed improvements to Windows 7. However, if you're on Windows Vista, there's not much important improvements that is worth the $100+ upgrade from Vista. If you're on Windows XP, you have to get off XP and go Vista/7. I've had almost no problems with Vista ever since SP1 even if there were problems they're just minor user solvable issues. xboxrulz

  5. I just got a license for Windows Server 2008 R2, it's not bad, but not much of an improvement over Windows Server 2008 (you can replace Server 2008 R2 with Windows 7 and Server 2008 with Vista as the server versions aren't much different than their consumer counterpart when you don't count the server features).

    More on my impressions here:

  6. Have you tried it out already ?

Even compared to Vista SP2 it feels a lot faster because the complete architecture of Windows 7 is just better than that of Vista.

Ya, I'm running the RTM version of Windows Server 2008 R2 since 2 days ago.

I did my full impression/review of it at my website here:

    http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/

The RTM version is basically small tweaks and critical bug fixes of the RC version. RC version is 90+% of what RTM is.

  7. from what i have seen of mac laptops they cost nearly ÂŁ1000 when windows laptops cost ÂŁ300 - ÂŁ500 i d say that is a big giant hole in price range.this is another reason why i prefer windows and don't forget there is less games for mac's because a mac is designed for media and windows is designed for gaming and among alot of other things.
another thing which i have heard about mac's is that you can not change as many parts as you can on a windows computer so i d that wins over mac any day.

Most of those laptops in the 300 - 500 pounds is usually poorly constructed compared to laptops in the 1000 pound range regardless if it's Mac or PCs.

I have a Mac laptop and it is built sturdier than my friend's PC laptop, my laptop requires a lot less repairs than the PC counterpart. However, PC laptops that are in the same price range for my Mac is about the same in sturdiness so, it's all about you get what you paid for.

Also, I'm no artsy guy, I'm a computer science student and I would rather have a Mac for a laptop than a PC laptop. For desktops, I have a PC at home.

  8. Except if the other cores are disabled by physically removing the internal wires before packaging the chips.

AMD didn't do that which I was surprised they didn't. I'm pretty sure AMD's doing this a marketing ploy since some enthusiasts would actually buy extra processors just to see if they can unlock them.

removing the wires would cost them more money to do so i would have thought they would just leave them in and have another way of doing it. I hope that someday they have 1024 cores in processor's and each core is 1000 thz in size. could you all imagine that i know that i would be imagine that specticule.

We are already barely keeping up with Moore's Law right now, so I doubt we can get 1000 THz w/ 1024 cores. It's gonna be a tough squeeze as there may not be enough physical space to squeeze so many cores.

I bet in the future we will have to invent a better point-to-point connection and have regular consumer running 2 physical CPUs just to keep up the performance demands. That and require programmers to be much more efficient than they are now.

  9. so is your computer running a quad core processor?Because i m only on dual core this is something that i wish that i had, then my computer would run even better.
    Don't you think so?

yes, the Phenom II 810 is a quadcore. The full name for this processor is the Phenom II X4 810. However, most people don't bother to write that as the model number already signifies that it's a quad core.

Phenom II 500 --> quad core with two cores disabled w/ full 6 MB L3 Cache
Phenom II 700 --> quad core with one core disabled w/ 6 MB L3 Cache
Phenom II 800 --> quad core with no cores disabled w/ 4 MB L3 Cache (2 MB of its 6 MB L3 Cache disabled)
Phenom II 900 --> quad core with no cores disabled w/ 6 MB L3 Cache

There's no Phenom II 600 as of yet.

  10. Hmmm.. alright, haven't updated here for a long while but this is what I'm running:

  11. I never found out if Windows 7 has a good compatibility for computer games. Anyone know if it does?

whatever works on Vista will work on Windows 7. Don't treat Windows 7 is like a godsend as it's just a tweaked up version of Windows Vista. Actually with Windows Vista SP2, it's about just as fast as Windows 7 RC.

So, don't believe what Microsoft is promoting as a saviour to Vista.

  12. I've never found an interest in Macs. The only reason I would get a mac is it is a bit cheaper and is pretty good for general tasks, such as facebook, homework, etc. Windows can basically do all of the things a mac could do.

how's it cheaper? Even I own a Mac and don't find them cheap at all.

  13. Personally using Google Chrome over Safari. I love the WebKit engine ... fast, stable, open source. Gotta have to hand it to KDE for starting the KHTML engine which Apple forked to make the WebKit.xboxrulz

  14. So I am planning on finding something for my daughter's used PC... I don't know if I will be able to do anything with Windows 7, but maybe I will have to give it a try. And with that maybe even try the Media Center... unless it is having a lot of those issues.

You should start a new thread and post your daughter's old PC. I'm using Windows 7 RC for my media centre and it's working flawlessly.

  15. Sounds like the system is dying but damn are those computers ancient artifacts. You really need a new system.

Get something along the lines of this:

    AMD Athlon II 250 ($87):

    ASUS M3A76-CM ($64.99):
    http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
    G.SKILL 2 X 2 GB DDR2-800 CL5-5-5-18 ($46.99):
    http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
    Samsung 500GB 7200RPM HDD ($59.99):
    http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
HEC 6K28BBX585 Black 0.8mm SECC Steel MicroATX Mini Tower Computer Case 585W Power Supply ($54.99):
    http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
    HP Black 22X DVD+R 12X DVD-RAM SATA 22X Multiformal DVD Writer ($24.99)
    http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/

Total: $338.95 (tax and shipping extra)

Much better than keeping that dinosaur.
