Tips For Slim Health And Long Life Dos and Donts of Healthy life.
cargeek replied to OpaQue's topic in General Discussion
What I Learned in the Military...As was previously stated, when you take in less, your metabolism slows down. And I'm sure you've also heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day...but did you ever wonder why?The answer is this... each morning, your body sets it's metabolic rate based on how much you take in when you first wake up. So if you're going to be cutting back on your calorie intake, you shouldn't cut the amount you take in at breakfast...and if you don't eat breakfast, you should start. If you don't eat a good breakfast, then your metabolism is slower for the day than it would've been if you had eaten something for breakfast. So if you're going to cut back, cut back on lunch and supper. That way, your intake is reduced while your metabolism isn't reduced (as much). Now, I know that there are those of you out there who are just itching to reply to this to flame me and tell me I'm an idiot, but it's how the U.S. Government teaches people to lose weight...it's not my method or my opinion...it's your tax dollars at work...just a thought...Thanks,Stephen -
http://sectools.org/ The above link is a list of free security software for Linux, Unix, and Windows. IMHO, some of the best programs on this list are these: NMap SAINT SATAN SARA OpenSSH PGP LSOF OpenBSD Bastille HPing FPing snoop this is also a very good site that contains tons of .iso files for countless Linux distributions: http://iso.linuxquestions.org/ and that should keep you all busy for the next five or ten years...have fun, everyone Thanks, Stephen

Software Engineering start an interesting topic
cargeek replied to bx93's topic in Science and Technology
I know nothing about SE... I am starting school for software engineering in June.. I hope to eventually get a job as a programmer....So, basically, I'm a newbie to everything...I've played with programming a little perl and am starting to play with php and mysql a little bit...I am pretty interested in working with security and hope to get into that area of programming as I start to build a career...this may sound like a stupid question, but I was under the impression that "Software Engineering" was just an official sounding title that they gave to programming..am I way off-base in this assumption? Could someone, maybe, define what we are talking about when we say "Software Engineering"??Stephen -
lmao "I think people who speak in metaphors should shampoo my freakin' crotch!" --Jack Nicholson in "As Good as it Gets" "Microsoft, ladies and gentlemen, is a cheap *****. She lives on the fringes of the law, but thereâs no getting rid of her because she fulfils a certain need in our society. People want what she is selling. Thereâs a certain painted-on mystique to her, of course. Weâve all been indoctrinated with the propaganda, the hooker with the heart of gold, the disturbingly wide-mouthed Pretty Woman. When you find her, though, beneath the paint sheâs really quite plain. You take what you need from her, but reluctantly and because you have no alternative. You get what you want, but she is almost peripheral to the act. Apple is a lover. From the moment you meet her, you know that she wants you to be happy. She wants to be a part of your life, and you canât help but be drawn into wanting to be a part of hers. She is beautiful and elegant in ways that the layers of paint on the Microsoft street-walker can only desperately try to imitate. There is one danger, though. So long as you are careful to protect yourself from infection, Microsoft can not hurt you. Microsoft is a transaction, and if the transaction goes sour, youâre only out of pocket. When your lover hurts you, she can break our heart. And Apple, for all her charm and grace, is notoriously thoughtless at times: scratch the surface of the Internet and youâll find a string of bitter, abandoned ex-âs who still curse her name. Linux (on the desktop, at least) is the psychotic girlfriend. She seems exciting at first and you pour an enormous amount of energy into the relationship, but she keeps demanding more and more, and she never gets any more predictable. Youâll find yourself awake at 4am arguing with her about where you left the toilet seat. And while the fact that her idea of a good night out is a trip to McDonalds means your wallet is thanking you, you end up wishing for someone a bit more refined. If youâre lucky, youâll come to your senses and do your best to keep her at arms length. If youâre unlucky, Stockholm syndrome will start to kick inâŚ" You can find this all in these two posts: The Fishbowl: Totured Metaphor Fishbowl: Psychotic Ex stephen

linux for developmentmac for productivityunix for stabilitywindows for solitairelol.... Okay, I currently only have one computer and it is running Win 2K Server (but is not setup as a server...just a home computer w/ dial-up internet...don't ask;). It's alright...some of the service packs/hotfixes are a little buggy, but not too horribly bad...it's definantly better than previous versions of windows. I just don't like the lack of agility. I have ran many distributions of Linux and never found one that I couldn't make it do what I wanted it to do. Yes, sometimes it is very complicated to keep up with it...but I like being able to re-program anything I want to do anything I want. I also like open source for philisophical reasons, but also realize that (Like bootlegging), if it were to become the industry standard, it would ultimately kill it as an industry and make it strictly an underground affair...either way, I'm still a source of the GNU Copyleft and the like... I don't like the lack of quality software for POSIX... The entire software (and gaming) industry is more or less based on the Windows platform (although it wouldn't break my heart to see a hostile takeover by Apple...Macs are pretty sweet) ...as a software engineering student I hate that this is so...maybe I'll be able to get a job with Sun Microsystems and won't have to deal too much with M$...one can hope...Anyways...Windows is the most user-friendly, but Linux and OSx are more stable and more secure... I was thinking, though: If the majority of home users were Linux users, then wouldn't the people writing spyware and viruses just start writing them for Linux?? I dunno...anyways...that's about all I have to say...StephenP.S. To Cryptonx: If someone is worth their salt as a hacker, then they really aren't going to be too worried about some home user who's mouthing off about how he likes windows...No, anyone who's half a hacker has bigger and better things to be doing with their time....no offense, but get over yourself.. -

That has to be the best description of "nothing". I don't know why...I guess I just like that it points out a very basic but very real flaw in the way we look at "nothing"...I don't know...I'm not contributing to the conversation any, so I'll go back to my corner now. stephen -
I'm glad you said that, because I was about to.....As for the question...I can't really say I have a favorite song. Wish You Were Here is really good, but then again, so is Comfortably Numb, Breathe, Time, Mother, Dark Side of the Moon..and the list goes on and on....suffice it to say that I LOVE PINK FLOYD....heheheheStephen.Oh yeah, and Dogs of War is a really freaking awesome song!!

okay....What kind of 80's music do you like? (what styles, bands)?the cure, ministry, skinny puppy, depeche mode, danzig, radiohead, metallica, megadeth, the ramones, violent femmes, cyndi lauper (goonies was an awesome movie!), blondie, madonna, billy joel, damn yankees, warrant, def leppard, ac/dc, twisted sister, motley crue, van halen, aerosmith, digital underground, and i could keep going on and on forever and ever so i'll just shut up with the list before this starts looking like an inventory list for amazon.comWhy is there something like subcultures?because within each culture there are many different types of people and people tend to gather in groups based on common interests, so we form smaller groups within the culture which are made up of groups of people who share a common interest (such as a common interest in cyndi lauper's heart of glass video). What subculture do you preferall of them except those partaining to annoying groups like new kids on the block, vanilla ice, lfo, 98*, bsb, n*sync, etc., etc.Is there something else you'd want me to know about the 80's music ?yeah....the 80's had some of the best music ever...the cure was/is some of my favorite music...Stephen

okay... so i'm wanting to get into php...and if i'm going to do this, why not go ahead and learn sql too....so i don't need someone to spell out sql commands or anything...i just need to know what to do in php to work with mysql (i.e. what php commands would i use to send queries to mysql)...i know this is an idiot question...but i hope someone will at least give me a hint as to where to look for help....i don't need it spelled out for me, but just give me some things to get me started....any help would be greatly appreciated...thanksStephen"Beware of programmers who carry screwdrivers."--Leonard Brandwein

hmmmm....well......i guess what it comes down to, as far as i'm concerned, is you've got to find something that works for you and have faith in it. whether that's science or buddhism or christianity or paganism or atheism....it really doesn't matter what...just whatever works for you....i am, personally, a pagan...i follow mostly celtic and kabbalistic teachings, but jesus said "my sheep will know my voice." i think he made a good point, there. just look within yourself and listen for that quiet voice deep within you....call it your soul or the holy spirit or your deep mind...what ever you like to call it, everyone has it...listen to it and follow it....as for "good" and "evil"...those are both relative concepts as well....in Massachusettes during the Witch Trials, it was sinful to be able to float/swim while there are people in remote parts of the world who still view cannibalism as perfectly moral....so just look within yourself and let your conscience tell you what is good and what is evil (and what is neither)....**shrugs**imostephen"beware of programmers who carry screwdrivers."--leonard brandwein -
The Meaning Of Life An philosophy discussion
cargeek replied to hast-webben's topic in General Discussion
AAAhhhh....okay, first you have to see that perception is everything. i would say that life is really meaningless, when it comes right down to it. but as was said earlier, why does that have to be a bad thing. I think people just don't like the idea that life has no real meaning. Then again, as was also previously stated, you must find what makes you truly happy and pursue(sp?) it. that's where perception comes in. while i percieve that math is all the reason or explaination for life and all that is needed to explain life, you may percieve that music is the sole reason for our existance. So, I guess you could say the meaning of life is to enjoy it. Really, though, that's a reason for a single life, not for the existence of life....I don't know...I'm just babbling...Anyway... That's my two cents.StephenP.S. Maybe that's the more important question: "If you offer me a penny for my thoughts and I give my two cents, where the hell does that other penny go?"
