  1. Nils I have edited the tutorial to include URL placement. I am sorry I didn't include it initially. It was 4 am when I posted. Go to: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ This is a site that I am building for a local concern here in New Mexico. The script is in use both in the left vertical navbar and in the foot navbar. There are a number of ways to change the look and feel of this script simply by playing with the different property settings in your table. (i.e. cellpadding, cellspacing, table borders and the like) Play with it to become familiar with the scripts versitility, If you need help, just ask Pete
  2. This short, but consise tutorial presents how to create a dynamic navigation bar using simple scripting verses using an image roll-over script. Using text instead of images offers 3 benefits while sacrificing only a little in design. The end resault is a navigation bar that looks great, dosen't bog the server down with images, loads fast, and is search engine friendly. In addition, you save time by not having to design two images for every link required. Using simple combination of Html, CSS, and Javascript we are able to create links in which both the color of the link and the background of the table data cell change when the user interacts with the link. To accomplish a text roll-over navbar there are three sections to the script The first step is to write a CSS script to control the link's color, font, size, and decloration. Here it is: Change the property values to match your site and place this code in the head tags of your document. <style type="text/css"><!-- a:link {color: #FFFFFF; font: arial; font-size: 13pt; text-decoration: none} a:visited {color: #FFFFFF; font: arial; font-size: 13pt; text-decoration: none} a:hover {color: #FFFFFF; font: arial; font-size: 13pt; text-decoration: none} a:active {color: #FFFFFF; font: arial; font-size: 13pt; text-decoration: none} --></style> The "a:link" controls the link when the mouse is out. The "a:visited" controls the link once it has been clicked. The "a:hover" controls the link when the mouse is hovering over the link. The "a:active" controls the link when the link has been clicked. You will notice that you can control each property of the link in each phase. The second step is to control the background color of the data cell the link is in. To do this we will need to place two variables inside of a script tag and place it in the head tag of the document as well. Here it is: Change the background variables to match your color scheme and place this code in the head tag of your document. <script language=""><!-- { var colorchange='#009C00'; var colorback='#074605'; }--></script> The "colorchange" variable is set to the color we want the background color of the data cell to change to when the mouse is hovering over the link. The "colorback" variable is the color of the background color of the data cell when the mouse is out. This must be the same as the bgcolor property value of the data cell the link is in. The third step is to create the table with data cells for our links: Here is the code: Change the property values to match your site and place this code where you want your navbar to appear on your site. Remeber that the bgcolor property in the data cell and the "colorback" variable have to be the same. <table width="100%" border="0" align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="1" bgcolor="#009966"> <tr><td width="10%" height="20" id="link1" bgcolor="#074605" align="center" valign="middle"> <a href="http://example.com/" target="_blank" onmouseover="{link1.style.backgroundColor=colorchange};" onmouseout="{link1.style.backgroundColor=colorback};">link 1 </a></td></tr> <tr><td width="10%" height="20" id="link2" bgcolor="#074605" align="center" valign="middle"> <a href="http://example2.com/" target="_blank"onmouseover="{link2.style.backgroundColor=colorchange};" onmouseout="{link2.style.backgroundColor=colorback};">link 2 </a></td></tr> </table> Also notice that the "id" property changes with each link. You can put the actual name of the link here if you desire so long as each "id" is different. You can add as many links as you want. The above code is for a vertical navbar, but you can go horizontal as well. In the above example the target is set to open a new window, if you want the page to open in the same window change the target property to target="_top" I hope this script will be useful to you. It is not as hard as it may seem. I will be uploading a new sub domain in the next few days that uses this script exclusively for all navbar if you need a visual.
  3. There are serveal good shopping carts in the script addon section in cpanel. All you have to do is click the link and the are installed for you, all you have to to then is customize it to the look and feel of your site. With the fact that it is just as easy to uninstall them as well, you should test them all out to see which one will best meet your needs and which one is easiest for you to comprehend.
  4. Thanks for the site on browsers. It is good to test your site in several browsers. The link will come in handy.
  5. I took the either as meaning both.I think that a good site designer/builder needs to be at least adequate at both. personally that is where I feel I am in both. I know html, javascript and am handy with cgi. I think, however that to be really good at site design you have to be able to conceive the entire project in your mind first. The goal is to end up with a site that performs its intended function, while at the same time, it is eye appealing. How much you understand about both aspects (programming and design) will determine how sucessful you are as a designer.I also think it is important to have a bit of marketing experience when designing a site. Where this comes into play is in the design of the site's navigation, the design of the ads, and the wording of its content.
  6. As I was working on a sub domain for my new site I decided to protect the email addresses on the site with a simple javascript to prevent harveters from grabbing them and flooding the mail box with spam. Hadn't seen the script in the forum yet so I thought I'd share it. Change the information in blue to yours and place this code where you want the link to show. Left as is no line decloration will appear under the link. If you want the link underlined then change none to: underline <script language="JavaScript"><!-- username = "usernameHere"; siteURL = "siteURLHere"; document.write('<a href=\"mailto:' + username + '@' + siteURL + '\"style="text-decoration: none;"> Contact Us</a>'); // End --> </script>
  7. I like the appearance of the site. Had a problem with all of the cookies the site tries to set. As well as the automatic download. Went to the site twice and each time it froze my browser.
  8. What's ironic about the whole Bush thing is that he isn't makeing any mistakes, or least according to his hidden agenda (secure the oil). Don't you get it? The problem Bush faces is not how to fix mistakes, but how to keep the media focused on these superficial mistakes while he covertly places this vast oil supply in the hands of those he is working for.Sound rediculous, it is! Not the theory, but the fact that he is getting away with it all. Ask yourself these questions: Why is it that we only go to war in oil enriched countries when a Bush is in office? Why is it that Bush, a personal friend of the Bin Laden (sp) family, still maintain relationships with them while he is sending our sons and daughters off to die in a supposed all out effort to get Osama? If have not yet seen Farenheit 911 you should view it. Not that this is the end-all on Bush, but it sure does open alot of doors for one to do personal research if they desire. Checking out the corpoate life of both Georges is an interesting endevor. The corpoates ties to the middle east are too numerous to ignore. Bush has an aganda, but it is all personal. And, he is using our tax dollars and the lives of our sons and daughters to carry it out.If you do not believe that an individual (Bush) with a personal agenda, who wouldn't hesitate to act on it, can get in the White House, than you have not done enough personal research on the matter yet. Don't believe everything on the news. We are only told what they want us to know. You really want to know whats going on behind American politics, listen to, or watch the BBC. Ironically, the Brits get a more accurate picture than we do.
  9. I was just interested to see who many members are professional web designers or if they only work on their own site.
  10. Count me in as well. I know Html, Javascript, CGI, and really want learn php. I have considerable experience in graphic design and being totally self taught, can improvise (using a combination of free stuff and self-written script to accomplsh my goals).I know I have alot to learn while at the same time I feel I can contribute as well.
  11. An iframe is a mircosoft property that allows you to place a frame inside of a table to receive another document. They work like a frame page but allows for readable content (outside of the iframe) for the SE spiders. They are extremely handy on the design end, but do not print when someone prints the doc off the internet, or only prints the content of the iframe if the right click/print option is use over the iframe itself. When I first learned of Iframes I loved them. Still do, however, as far as I know, Netscape doesn't read them, or at least the older versions don't. (Someone let me know if Netscape has added iframe, please) While ie is the browser of choice for most, far too many people use Netscape to even consider using iframes for publically viewed sites. I use text area boxes with CSS when I want the iframe effect. This basically will accomplish the same thing minus the graphics, and are entirely readable and indexable by the search engine spiders.
  12. I have read the agreement several times and no where have I found that we can't post ads. I plan to post affiliate ads on my site which will be up and running soon.
  13. It seems to me that hosting your own is the way to go. You have enough posts for a 20 meg site. Find yourself a photo gallery script and put your own up. Check out http://www.hotscripts.com/ or http://a1javascripts.com/ (lots of pop-ups here though) for the gallery script.
  14. I like the reputation option in this site. The only thing that is that it could easily be mis-used. I recently had a debate on the big bang theory with MajesticTreeFrog. Because of the subject matter and our strong and opposite positions It would not have surprized me to have gotten a negitive point from him. It never came. He/she understands the system. This I feel would have been a grave mis-use of the system, to give a negitive point because of a disagreement. The system is there to ensure that we each treat each other with respect, (language and such) and to ensure that info posted is accurate, and that the poster knows what their talking about.
  15. We use the term Friend, loosely. What is a friend? A true friend would lay their life down for you. A wise man in his 90's once told me that if he had made 5 true friends by the end of his life, he did well.
  16. I agree with ChronicLoser. I use Corel Draw, but only because it is what I learned on. I use Corel 7. I have 11, and I have photoshop, but for me to change would mean a learning curve that I don't have time for. If you haven't made your choice, I would lean to photoshop, mainly because there seems to be more designers who use it and it seams it is easier to get help though forums.
  17. In a previous post I stated that Flash sites, althought plesant to look at, were not as search engine friendly as static pages. This to me is flash's biggest problem. It is a catch 22 however, the people want both flash, and sound.I have gone to mixing it up using small pieces of flash embedded on static pages. What I have started to do is to support the flash sections with text hidden throughout the page, usually at the bottom of the page, that is colored the same as the background. While invisible to the viewer, the spiders are able to pick it up and index the page accordingly. This seems to work well, the customer is happy because they have some flash, I am happy because the page ranks in the engines, and for those on dail-up and with slow computers are still able to see the majority of the page while the falsh loads.
  18. Have you ever given thought to the fact that the child is in liquid and an Intelligent Designer designed it that wat for a purpose. How do you know it takes a long time and where are the missing links between species. Lucy, link all others for example, was proven to be an ape years ago. that there is no evidence saying that they did not commit the crime. It never ceases to amaze me the effort put forth to deny that there could be an Intelligent Designer, God. A Supreme Being who is in charge, probably because along with the Creator might come some rules He wants use to live by. Us humans want to "do what we will", it the whole of the law according to Alester Crawley, one of the world's predominent satan worshipers. We are saved through faith, not the perponderance of evidence. Why is it that scientist do not take into consideration a catistrophic event link a world wide flood, which would account for alot of what is thought to have occured over so called millions and millions of years. St. Helens carved a huge canyon in a matter of hours when she blew. Layers and Layers of sedimentary rock form in a heartbeat in time. I recommended to visit Hovind's site because it does raise the possibilty that perhaps there is another perspective that is not being taught, or even put forth to the general public by our state run school system. I thought the idea in search of the truth, which is what science is really all about, was to evaluate all of the evidence. Creationism is not taught in school because they would have to admit there is a Creator they might have to answer to. Again, Why is it that scientist do not take into consideration a catistrophic event link a world wide flood, which would account for alot of what is thought to have occured over so called millions and millions of years. St. Helens carved a huge canyon in a matter of hours when she blew. Layers and Layers of sedimentary rock form in a heartbeat in time. Ironic that a created being would try to predict the future actions of the Creator, however, He has seen fit to provide us with some insight through His Word. I too agree that the theory of Creationism should not be taught in a science class, it is a theory that must be believed by faith. That has been my whole point all along. Your own words prove my point. If the hard proof doesn't exist, than it has to believed upon by FAITH, thus it is a religion, and should not be taught in our public schools as fact. Chances are you most likely do not care for me because I hold views different from yours, That's ok with me, I hold nothing against you, however, it is apparent to me that either one of us will be changing our perspective soon. For me to change there would have to be hard factual evidence brought forth, and for you to change your perspective God would have to touch your heart. No need to persue this conversation anymore.
  19. Setting permissions in cpanel is easiest for sure. Click on the file and then in the upper right click on set permissions. Convenient and quick.
  20. Regarding not being able to delete an empty folder, it is most likely that there is a partial transfer in it. If the entire file did not transfer you won't get the little file icon to click to delete. You have to use cp as stated.
  21. Your incoming and out going stmp server should be set to: mail.yourDomain.com if you have your own domain or mail.yourUserName.astahost.com if yo are a subdomain. be sure that when your type in your username it is the complete email address and not just the username. Catches me every time. then enter in your pass word. The above was for Outlook, if you are using express click the link in cp and follow the two instructions. I had problems with express from this site so I converted to Outlook. It has more useful features anyways.
  22. This is the second hosting service I have with cpanel. we use it at work as well. Experience has shown me that it is best to ftp programs. Why, I do not know. On more than one occasion I have lost lines of script uploading through cpanel. If anyone has an answer for that I'd like to know.
  23. I like WS_FTP. Been using since the beginning. It is a free program as well. The only thing I don't like about it is you can't delete a folder that has something in it. You have to empty the folder. Instead, If I have to delete a folder, I use the file manager in the cpanel.
  24. A post doesn't have to be informative. If you are new you probably have questions about various things regarding design, programming etc. ask and kill 2 birds with one stone.
