the fight club example is pure corporate risk management. something that occurs most everyday. unfortunately there is usually a price placed on morbidity and mortality which is used to do a cost benefit analysis in cases such as your example.

 

as far as bsd ... anyone not running a bsd firewall is a *BLEEP*

Hey All,

This came up on the "Why do more people use Windows" discussion and I thought I would continue the theme here. I would bet that most people haven't heard of The Cathedral and the Bazaar by Eric Steven Raymond. Those who have, probably use *nix and are intersted in the opensource community.

 

If you haven't been exposed to this, please have a look. I think this goes a long way to describe the linux movement and also gives some insight as to why linux users/develops are so zealous.

I use opensource platforms/software exclusively. At home I have debian, mandrake and freebsd machines. I like the *nix OS becuase it's opensource, has a real community supporting rather than a coperate supprt. I think the opensource philosphy allows for the best, most efficient code to be developed. It's there for eveyone to see and tweak at will. MS hides their code which baits others to do whatever they can to break or breach the code.

Has anyone read Eric Steven Raymond's The Cathedral and the Bazaar? I think his philosphy sums up why I support the opensource movement. Here's the abstract from this tale:

I anatomize a successful open-source project, fetchmail, that was run as a deliberate test of the surprising theories about software engineering suggested by the history of Linux. I discuss these theories in terms of two fundamentally different development styles, the ``cathedral'' model of most of the commercial world versus the ``bazaar'' model of the Linux world. I show that these models derive from opposing assumptions about the nature of the software-debugging task. I then make a sustained argument from the Linux experience for the proposition that ``Given enough eyeballs, all bugs are shallow'', suggest productive analogies with other self-correcting systems of selfish agents, and conclude with some exploration of the implications of this insight for the future of software.

i got this error when installing phpBB manually when it asks for the prefix, i dunno what to fill in.

Yo Doc,

Can you paste in your error code so that we can see what has happened. Your explaination above does not give enough info to determine what the issue is. I have noticed that on some of the addon scripts you need to manually go in and chmod a few files especially the config.php ones. The default installs do not allow the file to be used properly.

I have played with them all and have settled on Gallery. I kinda liked the Coppermine one but it seemed a bit more intensive than what I needed. I have successfully set up and am using Gallery and ... so far, am very hapypy with it.

Hey Host Buddies,Where are you? Xisto?I noticed you are using thePlanet.com. I used them for a couple of years with two dedicated redhat servers. I even travelled to Dallas to check them out before leasing the boxes. I was most impressed. The giant fish tanks, cold rooms and geeks with mini aquariums on their desks ... too cool. They were great .. even calling me here in Australia when one of the boxes would go down (which was usually 2 am my time). In the end, my bandwidth became way too expensive and had to go looking for cheaper options. I would hope that the members here would concentrate on REAL sites that contain real, interesting, and/or unique content. I despise sites such as these that aim to get users to click through. They are just another way of fishing for free cash.

 

I'm sure you have some interesting content to post. Why not concentrate on improving the quality of our community.

Hey Mate,

If it is a good hacker, or more likely, a good group of hackers, you will not detect them easily. Especially if they are using your box to launch attacks on other computers or storing illegal material on there. Check you logs. Look for something supiscious. Always ensure you have all the latest security upgrades for your machine.

 

I have a server hacked by a romanian group once. I noticed a strange directory and then my server started acting weird (crashing, unusual traffic stats). They deleted the logs so that I could track what they had been doing but I did find that my logs were being writen to /dev/null (written into oblivion).

 

If your machine has been hacked ... best to wipe it completely and start over.

I had made a site before.. I usually do not recommend using content management systems. I have made couple of sites and I have always made own scripts for  managing the content. The advantage of making your own script is that you are in better control of design and working. Just a thought.. but this might not work in complex cases.

Yes, I agree. I don't use WYSIWYG web developers either but I was interested to see what happens with some of these content management systems. Their code can easily be modified to suit. I'll continue to have a play.

Hey All,

I have been playing with the cpanel and the various addon scripts available. There are a few content management systems in there! What is your favorite and why? I currently have mambo installed but I'm unsure if I'll keep it. I played with geeklog for a bit too.

 

I have used Postnuke in the past and wanted to try something different this time around. Anyone have any comments regarding these?

I have been looking high and low for a good domain service, and most places I have checked have Perl as a feature (including this one). What is Perl? It is included in the same info space that stuff like cPanel is put. But most importantly, how can Perl help me? If it can't, why do they advertise the ability to use it everywhere?

Perl is a you beaut scripting language. Used for developing web applications and delivering dynamic content to web sites. It can be used as a CGI-Script. I've heard that it is prefered to other scripting languages because it's faster. There are some good perl tutorial sites on the net ... just google 'learn perl'.

 

To compile perl you'll need to have it installed on your machine. If you not creating code, just using the scripts, then bang it into your website and hang on.

Well, wnough said about the demise of the floppy. They'll go the way of the dinosaur and reel to reel tape. Now we can ask ... what do we do with all these little plastic disks?

 

Perhaps one could glue them together on the floor to create the ultimate geek parquetry or floor tiles? What about using them as coasters for hot and cold drink containers? Could we develop a game based on throughing them frisbee style? Give them to baby geeks to teeth upon?

 

What kind of uses can you think of for the floppy?

Seriously, if you're looking to make something available to the majority of computer users out there, you should choose Windows. Unless, of course, everyone in your community uses Macintosh, which I doubt.

Actually I think the majority of users should not be lining the pockets of Microsoft shareholders. They should be supporting the ones who are really interested in quality computing. I agree, the MacOSX is a freebsd ripoff. I think they shoud be giving away MAcOSX for free!

 

ANyway, with the good graphical support for linux these days, the average home user could be just as ease with a linux box as a MS one.

Hey Mate,

I had a brief look around and wil pass along some reflections.

 

You should ensure that when people enter your site, they get an immediate and clear indication of what the focus of your site is. I gather that it is around programming but I would recommend you specialise in something specfic.

 

Before you advertise your site, have the bulk of your content and design completed. You'll find that people will go to the first page then immediate click away if it doesn't seem finished or have interesting/unique content.

 

If you can customise a little more I think that would draw attention too. The site feels like it 'out of the can' php site, meaning that it is merely the shell or theme that was included in the base php software you are using.

 

Getting people to come and participate is a very difficult thing to do. Remember, we all want returns for our efforts. The lure of posting doesn't last long but the lure of a free web account does (hehehe).

 

Seriously, keep up the effort and work on defining your site ... make it indivdiual and unique. The we'll all want to go and have a visit ... maybe even stay around for awhile.

There's some good advice already here but I wonder if you have made a directory in /mnt for your HD? I use numerous flash USB drives with ease on my machines. But first I have to ensure the drive is recognised by the computer, is added to /etc/fstab and has a mount point (hence the dir in /mnt or whereever you wish to mount the HD). If you use https://www.google.com/linux/, search for redhat and usb drives. I'm sure you'll get instant gratification.

Mine? Hashbang is a shortened version of #!/bin/bash (hashbangslashbinslashbash). I choose this some time ago and have used it in other online forums. It reflects my passion for *nix systems and using the command line. I don't always use the bash shell but I find it's the most user friendly.

 

And what is the story behind your own login name here?

Normally I do al my work via ssh and ftp. I found the cpanel intersting especially the ability to addin scripts easily. I played with this for some time this afternoon. Now, this evening, I can't access the cpanel. I can access other parts of my site. I feel like I'm bashing (#!/bin/bash ... hahahaha) the open source bible but I prefer the GIMP. I have used photoshop heavily in the past. It was only a couple of years ago when I decided to stop using any MS products that I forced myself to seek opensource alternatives.
