To further the wise frog ...organisms adapt as a response to pressure. An excellent example of 'recent' evolution is the work that is currently being done on 'Darwin's Finches' in the Galapagoes. Darwin did really say much about these finches, the name is more for historic 'who found them first' reasons. Anyway, these little finches out in the middle of nowhere have had to adapt an incredible array of lifestyle, eating habits, physical shapes, etc. to survive on these islands in very rugged conditions. I'm unsure why people tend to fixate on Darwin. Watson and Crick discovered the basic structure of DNA but there have been countless refinements since their initial discovery. Today, a serious researcher would not base all their knowledge of DNA based upon what Watson and Crick published. Do we still have debates about whether DNA exists?The issue with evolution is that it undermines a large fundementalists religious ideology who insisit on beliving the earch/universe and everything was created 4004 years ago (or somewhere in that vicinty). And that the old testament is, in fact, a literal history of the world (nevermind the dinosaurs).go figure ... I think it's a case of hidding ones intellect in the closet of faith.cheershashbang

Opaque,You missunderstand the concept of evolution. Man did come from monkeys. Man and monkeys share a common ancestor as does man and evey other creature somewhere in history. Any present day creature is just as 'evollved' as man...meaning that they have continued to change through time too. Man is not the apex or end result of evolution. This is anthrocentric thinking. We are merely the result of a process just as is any other creature.That said, some of the best illustrators of evolution is the exciting discoverys showing the link between dinosaurs and birds. There are too many evolutionary examples nowadays to even mention. Funny ... this seems to only be a topic of debate for those who are not versed in the sciences or those with a biblical axe to grind.Evolution is not a theory as mistakenly believed by many. It is a scientific fact. The exact details of evolution are continually debated and sometimes family lineages are changed as a result. But to deny evolution occurs would be to deny the validity to most every science. Darwinism which most people connect to evolution was merely the starting point for modern thought. It was not a completed and refined theory nor is it accepted as the absolute truth today ... as I mentioned ideas, research etc change over time.cheershashbang

Hey Mate,

Using ssh is easy. Simply cd to the appropriate directory. Then at the command prompt type: chmod 666 filename. That's it. You can see from others posts how you might change permissions other than 666. It works the same if you want 755 or 777 or whatever.

Hey Mate ...

You'll be surprise. Linux has graphical desktops that'll put Windows to shame. With that said ... the command line holds the power. I suggest you try Knoppix Liunx first. Burn to a CD and boot from the CD on your computer. If you like it or wnat more, you can then partition your HDD and have a dual boot machine.

 

I would also recommend you look at one of the basic linux tutorials on the net.

With all the information at hand, installation is as simple as pointing your browser towards the install.php file. If you uploaded the directory phpBB2 and its contents to the root directory of your server, the path you need is http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ domain>/phpBB2/install/install.php.

 

Fill in the text boxes and press the Start Install button. Within seconds you should be finished -- installation really is that simple. All the necessary database tables have been created for you. If you wish, have a look at them. There should be a total of 29 new tables -- and we haven't even had to think about SQL!

 

Shut down your browser, and don't forget to delete the directories called contrib and install. phpBB won't run until you do so. If, during the installation, you were asked to download the "config.php" file, you must now upload it to the phpBB2 directory, overwriting the existing file.

OK to make that image appear in the web forums ...

first, never use bitmaps (.bmp) file. They are too big to use on the net. Save that image as a jpeg (.jpg) or .png instead.

 

There is a little button just above this messge box that says "img"

click that ... type in the url and viola ...

 

your pict appears in the message board. provided it is in a valid format .. which .bmp is not.

 

As for how to create a html page ... I would recommend looking up a good web based tutorial site .. check that forum thread I mentioned before. Several member here posted the site they learned to make eweb pages from..

Hey Mate,I'll try to answer a couple of these.Page Creation - If you have been using a WYSIWYG editor, you should be able to create a webpage(s). Before you jump in and start creating, give some thought to how you will orgnise your files. At Xisto, you will need to store all your web accessible files in the html folder on your account. inside the html folder, I usually create another folder called images. This is where I store my images. I would recommend that on your personal computer you create a folder for your website. Then organise that folder and any subfolders just like you like to organise them on your Xisto account. For example:Xisto - your accounthtml (folder) index.html (your first page) other_pages.html (add all your other web pages) images (folder) image1.jpg (just add in all the images you used here) and any other folders you wish to createPlace all your pictures and images in the appropriate folder (as above) on your computer. When you then create your first web page (titled index.html) use your web editor to paste in the picts you want from your new images folder.Once you are happy with an initial page and have set up a system of directories on your personal computer ... you can then ftp them to your Xisto account. Normally the web editors have an upload feature. Have a look on yours. It should be pretty simple to set-up to ftp access your account (your domain name, your username, your password).I am sure there are some basic web page creation tutorials on the net. There's eve a thread on these forums about "how did you learn html" which would be worth you reading through. Like most of you here, I am self taught. I remember how amazing html coding was to me back in 1994/95. Since then, I have learned what I need via the web and through examining pages source code (which I still do to this day). In my windows days I used dreamweaver to code pages. Since moving to linux, I have adapted to using quanta. Quanta is not a WYSIWYG development tool. It's more a site management tool. I have found that this has caused me to become a much better html coder (not that I'm all that good). I now really appreciate the direct control over the code and can see a simplistic beauty in handcoded pages.As with anything, when you have to 'learn' how to do something you develop a much greater understanding as opposed to using a WYSIWYG tool. Another reason why I continue to enjoy working on my *nix machines.cheershashbang

I am not a windows expert but I seem to remember that somone can change your registry setting to ensure your browser always points to a specific url ... no matter what. You can probably find the answer somewhere in Carolyn Meinel's site HappyHacker. She has written and published extensively on how to do minor/harmless hacking.

I know Carolyn was in the midst of publishing an upate of the Happy Hacker books so I would assume the site info is up-to-date.

Bizaare ... that's not from my code - Have a look at the source. Dunno where you got that file.

 

I have made a minor tweek to my code and got a better (worse) result with firefox. It slowed it down to being non-responsive for about 2 mins before it finally recovered. See if it affects your browser more now.

If you can find a server running a older version of sendmail, you may be able to telnet into port 25 and do an anonymous email. OR, if you have an older version of sendmail installed on your freebsd firewall you can do the same thing ;-) (hashbang's freebsd fire is rather old hehehehe)Here's what you do:telnet to the server port 25 (telnet aserver.com 25)If you get a command prompt ... then try:helo a_bogus_email@whereever.commail from: a_bogus_email@whereever.comrcpt to: the_person_you_are_tricking@their address.comdatawrite your message. Actually Microsoft Works was a bundle of MS Programs which included more limited versions of word and excel. I think it also had a photo/image handler, limited publisher and a home finance tool too. I remember using it on an old computer and was frustrated becuase it didn't have full versions of word and excel (this was before my opensource days).

I found this site which has two very simple pieces of code, one that is supposed to crash Internet explorer and the other which is supposed to crash Mozilla. I don't know whether or not they actually work though, as they are both from some time in 2003.

Hey All,

A few years ago I had a shtml page which crashed most every browser. It would also completely crash win 95 and win 98 systems, requiring a reboot. This was heaps of fun especially when someone annoyed me on irc or icq. I dunno if it will still crash browsers and systems. I tried it again tonight on my linux box running firebird 1.0. It didn't crash the browser or the box. I got a firebird message saying that I should close the page or seriously slow the browser performance.

 

For those who are brave and want to test their browser ... here's my page:

Let me know how it turns out. It would be interesting to see if the windows systems can now cope with the page and not require a reboot.

Open SQL Server Enterprise Manager

 

When Enterprise Manager opens, right click SQL Server Group and select New SQL Server Registration.

 

The Register SQL Server wizard will now open.

 

Click on the Next button.

 

From the Available Servers drop down menu, select the server alias you created earlier.

 

Click on the Add button.

 

The server should now be listed under Added servers, click on the Next button.

 

When the next dialog box appears select ‘The SQL Server login information that was assigned to me by the system administrator’ (see above).

 

Click on the Next button.

 

Enter your Login name and Password – this will be used every time you connect to your SQL server.

 

Click on the Next button.

 

Ensure that ‘Add the SQL Server(s) to an existing SQL Server group’ is selected and ‘SQL Server Group’ is selected for Group name.

 

Click on the Next button.

 

When the next dialog box opens you can click on the Finish button.

 

Your SQL Connection will now be created. :-)

Unfortunately I was also raised using windows and now I have used it for so long don't think changing to linux is really worth the truble. Anyway I use:

 

1. OS: Microsoft Windows XP (SP2)

2. Web Server: Xisto's Apache web server

3. Database: I am currently experimenting with MySQL database

4. Dynamic Page Language: usually PHP

5. Page Designer: Macromedia Dreamweaver (If it's just something quick and simple i'll use notepad)

6. Graphic Designer: I really need to find a good one of these!

your still very young. i converted to *nix very old by comparison. i did web publisiing on a mac and windows before too. get an old machine and install a linux flavour and learn as much as possible.
