  1. yeah, they could maybe be turned into slow horrible weapons. But we already HAVE slow horrible weapons. What we Dont have are cures for the degenerative diseases and such that stem cells might cure.
  2. the best is still Ad-aware, those of you using spybot should know that it DOES NOT get everything. go download ad-aware and run both of them.
  3. Frames also happen to occasionally screw up printing of web pages. Granted, people don't print web pages all that often, but when they do, (it used to be anyway, maybe not anymore) that the computer would only print one frame. Sometimes, it wasn't the frame people wanted. And that was the problem.
  4. These days its not just microsoft that does that, its just about everyone. Which is sad really. The problem I have with microsoft is that they keep adding 'features'. I don't want these features, waht I want is some stability, security, and responsiveness. Really, the OS should exist soley to aid me in doing what I want to do. Thats it. Make it as easy as possible for me to get my work done, and as hard as possible for things to get in the way of getting my work done. And if I happen to define 'work' as 'play video games', then that is just dandy.
  5. if you know Solaris then linux shouldn't be that hard. And yeah, being a newbie to linux is excessively hard. That is going to be linux's big problem: creating a good and intuitive GUI. Sun's java desktop might get there at some point, because Sun is spending money on it. And a good gui is one of those things you generally just have to spend money on.
  6. you do realize that having 10-15 tabs open is sorta like having 10-15 copies of internet explorer open and doing stuff right? The problem is you are probably using up all the ram your system has, and its slow because its swapping to the hard drive all the time. the answer is to either, A get more RAM, or B, don't open up so many tabs.
  7. Well, I suppose if they tried then maybe they could, but there wouldn't be much of a point. Stem cells are precursor cells that do not yet have a set function. In your body, as you develop, they split off and form into all the different parts of your body, from brain matter to bone. Thats why they are usefull, if something is damaged badly, we can theoretically use stem cells to repair it by having the stem cells turn into the cells that were lost due to damage, and replace them, good as new. While I suppose you could attempt to turn this into a weapon, it seems the long way around. Making a biological/chemical weapon is hard, but we know how to do it. We realistically have as nasty a set as we will ever need already. While I suppose, with some work, you could make a weapon out of stem cell research, it seem inefficient, and no worse than the things we already have running around. So, in that way, even if they did make weapons, it would just replace an existing weapons, for a small net negative effect. On the other hand, stem cell technology holds out the possibility of repairing damage and diseases completely outside our current abilities. So, I think the net effect is most likely to be very positive.
  8. Think of it this way, in order for them to pay you 100 dollars, you have to generate more than 100dollars of revenue for them or its not worth it. Unless your site gets a decent bit of traffic, that will take a while.
  9. you know, you don't even have to move from your chair to get linux. Its free to download.
  10. Then of course, there are the 'password holders' that themselves have a single password. This has its ups and downs, if someone is trying to break in, all the passwords are random. And its a bit better than writing them down, because even if the attacker gets a hold of the password holder they have to break into it. If its designed well, that can take some time, giving the defender time to change and re-issue passwords.
  11. I voted for. Why? well, there isn't any real reason to be against it. Most of what I have heard ranges from 'but it might be dangerous, you shouldn't meddle with it' to 'its against gods will' or something similar. To the second, I have no non-violent response I deem worthy. To the first, I think it is like all research involving medicine: it has to be done carefully and with extreme control, especially in the beginning. If we can research weapons that can level cities, we can research this.
  12. Some games are coming out for linux, but the words 'a lot' is rather strong. Most of the games that are 'released' for linux are actually just game servers because so many servers run linux. So, you can serve the game, but you can't play it. Its a lot easier to port serving code than it is to redo graphics entirely without directx. I so wish apple would open up OS X more than they have, and allow linux people to use their graphics. If that were ported to linux then suddenly linux and OSX could combine for getting games, and that would be fantastic.
  13. I haven't used it much, but I taught myself HTML by looking at web pages, messing with notepad, and learning what I could out of a very bad text/reference manual. That was like...8 years ago though. I am so very very very out of date.
  14. WOW. Thats sad. I never bothered with XP, I use 2000 on my windows box. You might want to try it, its got a lots less random extra crap. If you don't need any of the things they added in XP, its otherwise the same thing, but without these problems.
  15. Sadly, in North Carolina, USA. I hope to move to Boston at some point soon.
  16. You say that intel and amd MBs are better than 3rd party MBs?? What about nVidia's nForce boards? Those are some of the best on the market. Or Via? Both third party manufacturers thrive on the fact that their boards are better than reference boards. As for speakers, I suppose if you are talking about generic computer speakers, you are close. But there are 'audiophile' manufacturers who sell stuff you won't find at best buy. I use a pair of paradigm atom v3s for my computer speakers. Those blow the pants off anything from creative or logitech(and are priced similarly). Similarly, for headphones, while Bose makes some damn nifty ones, I understand Sennheiser has a higher top end. But, it all depends on budget there. I will do some reasearch and figure out which I acutally like better at 'reasonable' prices, since I would like to get a set of nice headphones at some point in the future.
  17. My desktop has 2, a 120 gig main HD and a 30 gig mp3 server plus backup for important files. My laptop has a 60 gig HD. And on another note, lets not even talk about the 4 or so binders filled with cd-rs and dvd-rs that i have for backup and archiving.
  18. Wow, thats pretty cool. I don't think I would ever have the patience to mess with stuff for that long. Still, kudos for those who put in the time and effort.
  19. Then Avalon, with some training and practice, you would do a very good job as a coder. What you do in coding is break down something into smaller and smaller pieces/problems, and then solve them all. If that sounds like something you like, go get a book on something like Java.
  20. hey Hast, have you tried out tristania? you might like em. Their first and third Cds are their best. Also check out theatre of tragedy. Damn, I wish I was at me desktop, I have all my music on there and I could suggest a bunch more bands. If you feel like rummaging through a lot of crap for a few true diamonds, go to https://www.scene.org/
  21. I agree with Dreth. They aren't bad by any means, but they aren't particularly good. Their sound is pretty standard rock-pop, and their music doesn't have much depth, but is instead the modern relgion minus content wave of thought going through america. I am glad you enjoy them, but perhaps you should also try out some other music, something not on the radio. Find a local club and support local and independent bands. You will be surprised at how many good ones there are. Even better, (at least around here) a full night of live music with independent bands lasting for hours is only like 10 dollars.
  22. Irfran view for me as well. I used to use ACDsee, but I decided I wanted to use as much fully legit software as possible. So, I now use Irfran view. Its pure freeware, and for all the purposes I ever needed ACDsee for, its just as good, if not better.
  23. you know, you probably don't need all the stuff that a full version of photoshop can do. Photoshop elements is much much cheaper and does basically everything relevant. Check out the different feature sets and then decide if you need to shell out the extra money. I believe the wacom tablets come with a free copy, but that might only be the more expenive tablets like the intuos(which is what I bought). If the graphire tablets come with elements, then go buy a 4x5 graphire tablet. It only costs 100 dollars, and elements costs nearly that much, so its a much better deal.
  24. well thats cool. Personally, I think the only good deal on a mac is the ibook, which is what I bought. In terms of power/performance for price it was about equal to equally priced PCs, but it wouldn't give me any crap, and got tons of battery life. The powerbooks on the other hand are at least 400 dollars overpriced, IMHO. I use a PC for my desktop, for gaming and things that just need pure power thrown at them. For situations other than that, I use my mac.
