Screen Resolution Problem With Mandrake 2005 need help setting the screen resolution to a different size

Hi allIm running mandrake 2005 on a laptop with wide screen, and thats my problem, mandrake doesnt sem to have a resolution size that fits my screen. im fairly certain that my screen size is 1020 X 800 or 1024 X 800 but the closet setting is 1024 X 768 which is really annoying as everything is stretched out and horrible, so does anyone know of a way to get a custom size screen? its an LCD screen and i have set it to an lcd display but still it isnt right. If anyone does know of a way can you explain it abit as im abit of a linux newbie.Thanx

While I've been using linux a fair while now, I admit I haven't had much experience with such problems since mine usually works quite easily. I would suspect it's an issue with the drivers for your videocard moreso then the distro itself though. Possibly ensuring you have the proper drivers for your videocard installed could help. I know that's limited my resolution settings in the past.Since it's a laptop though, I'm not sure if you'd need to specify somewhere your monitor/screen type. I assume someone will be along in due time to fill in the blanks

Some laptop manufacturers are strange. They make weird resolutions. Yet, most keep the standards. I've never seen a laptop that doesn't follow the standard. You might need to download the graphics driver for your laptop's graphics card.xboxrulz

I'm not sure about Laptop LCD screens but LCD screens usually tell you what the resolution and refresh rates should be for optimal display.You can alter the size of it by editing your xorg.conf file and just specifying the exact specifications required, just make sure you backup this file first and that you have the MandrivaCD incase you need to do a rescue and revert back to the old one.Cheers,MC

You'll need to install the drivers for your video card. If it is ATI, then just go to ATI's website and download them. They should come in a RPM file. But somewhere on the web, you should be able to find them. Then you'll need to rewrite the "xorg.conf" file if you are using X11 as load the windows manager. Its fun stuff.

yeh i tried editing the config file already as said before that didnt work, had to use the cd to reconfig everything. Ii shall look for my drivers methinks...hopefully thatll do it.

you cant JUST change the screen resolution in that config file, you must also set refresh rate.look in your monitor manual, their will be a table or screen resolutions / refresh rates.

In the "xorg.conf" it has pretty much all of your peripheral settings such as monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc. It has the resolution settings as well as the refresh rates. You really don't need to know exactly the refresh rates for each resolution. It kinda just gives you a range of rates to use, at least my setup did. But if you edit that file without first installing the drivers, it won't do anything. So find your drivers and install them.

it's really "if the driver supports" the functionality. It's not really xorg's fault.xboxrulz
