$2500 Web Hosting Bill My school screwed over

Recommended Posts

As with most public school systems, Internet is provided by a state funded organization. They also usually provide free unmetered bandwidth and disk space for website hosting. Not a bad deal! :)

Ok, here's where the problem starts. Our webmaster LOVES to take photos... we hit the 50,000 photo since Aug. 2005 just a few weeks ago :D We have 50,000+ photos on the website. Each photo is ~400K in size (sized down from about 4 megabytes a piece!) and that adds up! Plus we have TONS of pages... I think maybe ~10,000 pages (give or take).

Today, I heard that our school has racked up a bill for $2500 and that our service provider is charging web space at $100 per GIGABYTE.

This has District Technology ticked off, the Board of Ed is probably ticked, and our webmaster is also ticked.

NO webhost (except ours) would charge $100 PER GIG! On a web host I pay for, I pay less than $10 a month for 1.5 gigs of space!

Now to make this worse, imagine this. Xisto turns to paid hosting and charges members $100 per gig (just an example) and also makes it where you can't just pack up and leave Xisto. This is the situation we're in. We just can't launch a DNS, mail, and web server and be happy. We're stuck!

I hope you don't mind me picking on Xisto. It is a wonderful free service (the best, really!) and I just needed a web host to use as an example :P

That's insane dude. I've never heard of $100 for a GIG !!! For that price a month you could probably maintain a moderate ranged server itself. What crap !! You should take in contributions from everyone and hire out a sniper to blow out the whole ISPs top $hits :)

My high school had policies against pretty much everything so they wouldn't have let us have school hosted sites, but my university has them as long as they follow guidelines and I can imagine they'd be screwed if they got stuck in a deal like that. Then again they handle their own storage, but thats not the point. $100 a gig is freaking retarded... I say just break in and steal all their servers... or do the sniper idea thing... either works...

Didn't you see the prices when you actually acquired the webhosting? Golden rule with buying whatever is to read the fine print (especially the part with the prices). Even if $100 is unreasonable, if it was stated on the contract or whatever agreement paper and you still signed it. It's your own fault :|.(Still wondering if the costs weren't for something else)...Now...If you would just give us a name of that webhost?
