How Can I Get/make A Website Forum ? one of these.

Recommended Posts

If I am correct, some of the settings won't be applied if you do it offline and then upload it later on. I don't know much about databases, but I'm pretty sure that the database will be modified some point in time when you are customizing it offline.

My suggestion is to do your testing offline. Write notes if needed. Then just customize it the same way using a fresh upload for the forum (if you have one in place already, then just make the specific setting changes you made offline to apply to the online one).

Since it's getting better and better, I highly recommend using Simple Machines Forum as your forum. The choice is really up to you. :)

I like to use XMB Forum myself, it serves its purpose and has some nifty features and great skins. It's also customizable with CSS if you know how to use that... It's definitely worth a try :)

Best of luck :P

Well try phpBB2 here or do a search for bulletin board software or if you are a hosted user of this site, then get one already throgh the C Panel.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I have a problem with the phpBB 1 and 2 forums that C Panel installed for me. I chose an admin name and password but when I try to access the administration panel... I get nowhere. It says I have to reauthenicate. When I do, It simply takes me back to the home page.

This may be a part of a much larger problem for me, however; I am finding that in order to properly log in to any of the systems I've installed on the server, I HAVE to check the "remember me" box. If I do not check that box while I'm logging in, The login will fail and I will be taken right back to the login page.

Currently I have phpBB, phpBB2, and Mambo installed in separate root folders. I can't imagine that they would interfere with each other, especially since this has been happening since I installed Mambo, (way before I attempted phpBB).

Thanks for any ideas. This may become a thread of its own.

If you just need a forum for your site, then I would use proboards or invisionboards or something of the sort. These are forum host and they allow you to create and edit your own forum. You can add the link to your site or put it in a frame or something so that it looks as if it is still on your site and not on the forum hosting site. That's a cheap way to do it, and isn't very effective but hey. The forum work well though I was using proboards for a little while. It was running pretty well. I only had about 20 members though so if you have a couple hundred to a thousand I don't know if it would start charging fees aor it would run worse than it did for me. I dunno, I haven't really played around much with forum board host. However, if you are trying to make a forum board from scratch, good luck to you. I don't know how to do that either but I am still attempting to learn. Just like I am attempting to learn php (LoL, I've only read the introduction). Good luck to you though. I'm sure their is a good tutorial out there. Do a yahoo search on it. ::NOT GOOGLE:: :D

The thing with proboards, ezboards and other sites like that is that they have adverts on them, and are limited in how you can customise them.If you host your own, you have a greater degree of control. If you join Xisto you get the option to install PHPBB, along with quite a few different scripts in Fantastico which are quick and easy to install. You can customise them as much as you like, which you can't on many of the free alternatives which are hosted alternatively. Why do you hate Google so much?

I personally like SMF myself, lots of mods and skins for it and it is easy to administrate. Also there are a few people here on Xisto that are very knowledgeable when it comes to SMF and are more then happy to help you should you need it.If you would like to try SMF I'd be more then happy to help you with it if you need it. Its real easy to set up and install on your website. All of the members of my forum like it.

Both phpBB2 and SMF are in Fantastico for an auto install, which makes it easy for you to get a board if you're hosted here at Asta. If you have other hosting, just go to the board's site - SMF {link} and phpBB2 {link}, download the files, upload to your server, configure if need be and run the setup.php file.

Of course, if you don't want to install there are a lot of sites that offer hosting just for boards.. One of the most popular ones is InvisionFree {link} because the boards are IPB, which is actually a commercial board unlike phpBB and SMF.

phpBB has been around for so long now that lots of variations have been made on it - phpBBFM (phpBB Fully Modded) {link} which includes a lot of mods (click here to see it working in a big scale). The other one which comes to mind is phpBB Plus {link} which is a slightly altered one which (I think) includes a portal type thing or something like that.
