The Simpleton1405241582 0 Report post Posted September 16, 2010 I know Solaris and OpenSolaris are two different operating systems, and I also know that OpenSolaris is the free one. Well there wasn't any sub-forum for OpenSolaris so I decided to put it in here. Solaris continues to live on, but OpenSolaris has been discontinued, because Oracle (which took over Sun in Jan 2010) is not interested in developing the open-source OS anymore. It may not have been the most popular free OS out there, but it was good to see a full-fledged OS from the stables of Sun Microsystems. Now it is dead, but it will continue to live on in another form, by the name of Illumos, which is being developed by a team of core Solaris developers. The Illumos project is still in the initial stages and it may take some time to get fully developed, and there's nothing in the download page of it's official website (http://wiki.illumos.org/display/illumos/illumos+Home) but in time this derivative of OpenSolaris will be out for the public. So has anyone of you had a good experience with OpenSolaris so far? Are you saddened by the fact that it won't exist in its original form anymore?
ysNoi 0 Report post Posted September 17, 2010 Oh that's really a sad story.Probably their reason is: The formation proved timely, as Oracle discontinued OpenSolaris soon after in favour of Solaris 11 Express, a binary distribution with a more closed development model to debut later this year....Oracle is a good one. I even used their Oracle VM VirtualBox and it's great so I think their project on Illumos will be soon announced.
