Any Guides On How To Record Using VLCVlc Media Player

I just installed VLC on my computer, and I find it difficult to figure out how to record a video stream from the internet.  Documentation is pretty much non-existent.  I'd appreciate if someone posted step by step instructions on how to record, say, a Youtube video or an internet sports broadcast onto my hard disk.
