Hey guys,,
I got a bit of a problem I dont know how to solve ;((

Ofc if its going to stump me its going to be about MAC ;((
I have a freind with a broken IMAC..seems the screen is busted and ofc there isnt an external VGA connector on the IMAC to hook a new screen upto it ;((

I need to get all the files of this thing and burn them to a DVD on my Windows 2000 pc..

Ok i thought about FTP...but I cant see the screen to set it up ;((

So I am going to have to open it and take the HD out and hook it up on a spare IDE on the Win2k pc..

Heres where I know it will complicated (cos its a MAC l;((

Windows will not read HFS disks..there is no support from MS or Apple ofc to help this problem.
Only software I can see is 3rd party software...all you have pay for - Macdrive,OpenMac etc etc and they all seem to have great features on thier trial products like not being able to handle files over 1mb;((
Does anyone know a FREE HFS driver plus some software to explore the drive?

Thanks for your help!!

Mark;)

What version of the mac OS was the IMAC using?

I am not quite sure how to solve the problem, but I am wondering if it would be possible to use one of those ghosting applications like Norton Ghost to create an exact disk image. That way it may not actually have to understand the file formats. There are ways to run OSX on a PC but I don't know if you would want to go through the hassle.

First of all, how to get access to the drive:

Hold down Apple-T (The "Apple" key and "T") while the system boots and it will boot to "Target Mode" this makes the Mac act like an external firewire drive. If you have firewire on your PC, you can access the drive that way.

Access to the files: No way to do it under Windows; I've tried. It is, however, pretty easy under Linux. Linux supports both Firewire and HFS volumes (read-only), so you can mount the drive and read the files off. Either burn them from Linux or copy them to somewhere accessible to Windows.

Now, the "I don't have Linux" part: You may be able to get what you want by downloading a Linux "live-CD", essentially a demo disk. There are even several that are geared toward recovery, including RIP and The Ultimate Boot CD. I do not know off hand that these two support HFS, but it is a good bet. I believe I have used RIP to do this before.

If you decide to try this route, it will take some learning. I can probably help more with a bit of it, essentially carrying my Mac firewire drive over to my Linux box and figuring out the steps again. The big thing is I have to remember how to access the firewire device from a recovery disk.

Thanks for the suggestions..I managed to get things running in the end..The user had tried to install mac osX and it had gone wrong..renderign the display unreadable ;(After messing around with it for a while I got a readable screen..so he had a zip drive so i backed up all the stuff over to the windows pc using this..HE didnt have the Os9 install discs so Im torrenting them in right now..Hopefully tomorrow I can format and rebuild it to a working state again - well as "working" as a Mac can be... :P))
