NigaiAmaiYume

Choosing A Domain Name Ive got two ideas, which is better?

Recommended Posts

The little corner of the universe (and web) I've been designing in my head has always been called one of two things: - BitterSweet Dreams - NigaiAmai YumeI tend to use the two interchangeably (see below for my discussion on "NigaiAmai Yume"). Now that I'm trying to force myself to put it up on the web, however, I'm not sure which to use as my "primary". On one hand, BitterSweet Dreams makes more sense for my primarily English audience. On the other hand, I like NigaiAmai Yume, and am a freak. ^-^bittersweet-dreams.com is available, but kinda strikes me as the web address of an SM porn site. LOLnigaiamai-yume.com is also (unsurprisingly) available, but obviously much harder for most people to remember.Any suggestions? (Of course, it's likely going to be a while before I actually BUY a domain, but ya never know...)About NigaiAmai Yume:NigaiAmai Yume is basically a literal translation of BitterSweet Dreams in Japanese. I got into Japanese due to my anime addiction, but honestly love the language and am trying to make a serious effort at learning it (Despite having proven languages kick my butt from High School French). When I first started seriously thinking about putting my stuff online, I opened up my Japanese dictionaries (romanji and kanji) to see what it would come out as. My findings resulted in 苦い甘い夢, literally the kanji for "bitter", "sweet" and "dreams". I loved the look of it, I loved the sound, and it's stuck.More indepth research has resulted in discovering better translations of "bittersweet" (Both the flavor and the feeling), but I've stuck with the literal one. My excuses are that the incorrectness adds interest (Which would be quite an exceptable reason in the orginal culture, from my understanding of Japan) as well as emphasizing the orginal oxymoron. Real reason, of course, is just that I like NigaiAmai Yume. ^-^

Well, it all depends on what you want to do with the site associated with that domain name. If you are going to keep a corner of the web, as a detailing or profiling of yourself, with some spice up of your literary works (which I presume you want to show), then I would suggest you go for the nigaiamai-yume.com.Yes, it is hard to spell it, but do not expect people to come to your personal site by typing the exact domain name. It will usually come from referral and organic links to your site. And if you want to keep a website for the display of your works itself, I think that would require some brainstorming. Try to grab a domain name that sound literary or fantasy (which I belive is the genre of your literature). I would suggest you keep the two of them seperate - your personal site, and where you would be displaying your literary works.By doing so, when you market your literary works with the domain name it would not look a bit cheap and ameturish. It would come hard on one with literary flare to do it, but so is the world. Well, those are my opinion ofcourse.

Personally, I'd go with the English version, Bittersweet-Dreams.com .

First of all, don't worry, it doesn't shout BDSM. I should know .. lol.

Plus, as a rule of thumb, you should go with the name that is easier to remember for more people. I've already memorized bittersweet-dreams.com, while I had to go up and copy and paste nigaiamai-yume.com. I have a feeling many non-Japanese readers are the same :).

Plus, you never know. Perhaps one day, your Website will be a great success and you might decide to sell it. An English domain name is sure to sell for a much higher price than a Japanese domain name (or any other language, really).

And lastly, remember that we usually make decisions based on our own preferences and preconceived notions. These kinds of decisions are usually very satisfactory for us, but they might not be so for other people. And since you're making a Website, I have to assume you care about what other people think... well, at least you should :).

Good luck.

I choose Bittersweet Dreams.1. It's English.2. It means something to most people in the US.3. It's neutral to non-animephiles.But I highly recommend you leave out the dash between the words. That is so outdated in my opinion.

But I highly recommend you leave out the dash between the words. That is so outdated in my opinion.

Even though this opinion is highly debatable, we won't need to worry much about it since BitterSweetDreams.com is already taken :).

But that brings out another problem. People might confuse the dashed with the non-dashed version. Well, actually, that's not that detrimental a problem if NigaiAmai Yume` will be focusing on online promotions of her Website, since people will simply click the link she provides rather than type it themselves. And if you're going to tell people about the Website by word of mouth, well, make sure you mention the dash :).

Cheers.

I also think the English version is better. It's easier to remember for most people and since you're going to be writing in English, your audience will mostly be speaking English. That way it's more likely your audience will type your domain in and visit. Of course, if the content of your site is mostly about anime or some other Japan-related issue, then it's probably fine to get the Japanese version. But from your description of your site, it seems more personal, so bittersweet-dreams might be better. There is the slight chance that bittersweet-dreams and bittersweetdreams will get confused, but I think it's more likely that the position of the dash will get confusing for people. The existence of the dash seems easier to notice. :)
