nightfox1405241487 0 Report post Posted July 21, 2006 I got my shipment of Kubuntu CDs in the mail yesterday. So I decided to give the LiveCD version a try and is what I'm on right now. Actually, I'm using my mom's computer which doesn't like Ubuntu, but it likes Kubuntu! Now other than the terrible resolution of 640x480, I'm loving it. I'm not a big fan of the GNOME interface (hehe... the Windows User inside of me) but KDE on Ubuntu makes a difference.I want to check if the Live CD will run on my laptop (my laptop has caused kernel panics of EVERY distro of Linux I have) so maybe it'll like Kubuntu. One of the things I like about K/ubuntu is that it is pretty much what I call "idiot proof" linux. There's NO root account to worry about. Doing "n00by" things on a previous installation of Ubuntu, I couldn't screw up my system. My one friend at work was telling me one day about how he wanted to try Ubuntu. So I gave him a CD I ordered though ShipIt, and he loved it. Of course it wasn't the 6.06 version, but he still liked it. He is a n00b to Linux (I'm a little more experienced, so I'm above n00b) and he agreed with me, it's idiot proof. There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with it other than missing Firefox and OpenOffice.org. That's the only thing that saddened me (unless it is in the actual version you install and not in the Live CD for some reason).Other than that, if you used Kubuntu, what do you think of it? Btw, I'm using version 6.06.[N]F
Jeigh1405241495 0 Report post Posted July 21, 2006 I haven't used Kubuntu itself, only UBuntu with the KDE libraries (apparently its enarly the same but has a few glitches usually) but overall its quite nice. I stick to gnome with ubuntu usually but either are really fine on top of a very solid linux distro. I'm not what I would call a linux pro, but I'm far from being entry level and I still prefer ubtunu over most other distro choices. Regardless it is indeed a great release (oh and the install DOES have firefox with it, and OO.O is just an apt-get away... I don't think its in the main install but I could be wrong)

[N]F Hey mate, are you really talking about Ubuntu???, did you try it yourself or just you heared that from another one??? 1- who said that ubuntu hasn't root account?? it has, but you need to configure it, by entering adminstration menu, choosing user groups, type root, search, properities, the put the password you want to use as it puts a random password by default, and apply it, then you need to get to welcome menu setup, and apply root to login in from graphical interface such like any other user. 2- since when doesn't it have mozilla firefox and openoffice.org?? it comes with openoffice.org2 by default, and it installs it by default, second, you can download firefox if u don't have it installed, though it comes with it installed by default. sorry, never heared something like that about ubuntu
Jeigh1405241495 0 Report post Posted July 21, 2006 He wasn't saying it was impossible to get the programs... just that the LIVE CD doesn't have them. The live cd doesn't load all the software that comes with the main install version of the distro since it is, in fact, a live cd. GOtta keep it light or it'll kill your system. Also, sure there IS a root account, but again I assume he jsut meant there isn't one by default (well not accessible by default) AND you are encouraged to only use sudo and not actually use the root account. So while there is a root account, they do their best to make sure you don't use it, and that you don't need to, so your system is less likely to get n00bified

It's Linux so of course it has a root, they hide it really well which is great. That's why I suggest to anyone who really wants to start using Linux, start out on basically an idiot proof Linux distro. Yeah, again, it might just not be on the Live CD version... I'm sure it is on the installed version. I've installed Ubuntu 5.10 & all the features were there... just not on Kubuntu, unless the K Desktop Environment really is hogging space wise and they had to leave out some things in the Live CD.[N]F
