Tommy1405241497 0 Report post Posted May 31, 2005 Who doesn't know Google, it is slowly taking over the world . We all use (well least i think so) Google on a daily basis, it has become a part of our lifes. Some users just use google as a search machine, but others use it much more. Google offers so many services that not many people know about. Google Groups Google Local Google Web Accelerator (BETA) Google News Google Adsense Google Translate Google Maps (Keyhole) Google Video Search (still in Beta) GMAIL (still in beta) Desktop Search Picasa Google Print (online Libary, pre BETA) Google Images Google fusion (also in Beta)* and don't forget Google Search the list goes on =) * Google fusion or My Google is the next generation of Google. Remember that huge space underneath the search buttons? Well that will be filled up with your personal layout: Weather, email, News.... (all google services) BETA version of the product can be found here: https://www.google.com/ig History: Google was owned by Yahoo in the begining, but after arguements google went solo (thank god). Google was a "normal search engine up to a few years ago, when google noticed that they could make a lot more money with advertisement and so the set out to make the best search engine in the world. What is next: Well a lot of people are speculating about what will come next, so here are a few speculations: A. G Messenger? Probability: 90% B. G Browser? Probability: 50% C. Local services? Probability: 95% D. Video content distribution? Probability: 65% I wonder if google will turn into a portal like its opponents (yahoo and msn)? What do you all think? My first post =) can someone please move the thread to the correct forum! (Serves me right having two browser windows open on the site )

jet 0 Report post Posted June 1, 2005 G Hosting.. I don't think that's going to happen, or if it does it won't be at the same quality as the other services. If they turn into a portal like Yahoo, Excite etc, they may offer hosting with scanty space and ads like they do. And the whole point behind google is providing a good, free service. So if they gave you a tiny bit of spaces plastered with ads, wouldn'ti t kind of defeat the purpose? G messenger - I hope it won't be another generation of IM. If it was just a program that incorporated AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo, Jabber etc and gave you an option to ad other google users, that could be of some use. Especially as google aims to make everything multi platform (most of the multi IM proggies only work in windows).
Tommy1405241497 0 Report post Posted June 1, 2005 i agree there are so many differnet types of messengers. i think that they might do something for gmail, like a desktop mail send.... or something like that
gnatius 0 Report post Posted June 2, 2005 I am a big Google fan!!!!Research and development of new tech is his strength. All this amazing and different products come from a company policy called "pet-proyects". Every single Google employee is allowed to have some (about 20%) of their company time and resources for a project of his/her own. If this project is good/great/awesome it gets resources to be developed as a company product. Many of the existing services which Google offers (including Orkut and Google News) were developed by employees.Always the most talented, creative, and entrepreneurial people leave companies like Microsoft in frustration in order to start their own enterprisesGoogle has created an environment where the most talented, creative, and entrepreneurial employees can play in their own sandbox, and have their pet projected funded within the company. saxsux 0 Report post Posted June 2, 2005 None of you really have put much research into this... Firstly, Google News, Groups and Local are BETA (Tommy didn't mention it). Also, Google Maps and Keyhole are 2 seperate things. Google already offer Instant Messaging. It came as part of the deal when they bought Picassa. Visit hello.com; Gnatius, no offence, but the whole 20% thing is actually quite common knowledge. The whole thing about Local Services, I don't know exactly what you mean, BUT try this - https://www.google.co.uk/maps and https://www.google.co.uk/maps/preview?source=newuser-ws (or .com for the American versions). And, heres an improved list: Google GroupsGoogle Local (BETA)Google Web Accelerator (BETA)Google News (BETA)Google AlertsGoogle AdWordsGoogle AdSenseGoogle TranslateGoogle Maps Google Video (BETA)Gmail (BETA)Google Desktop SearchPicasa 2Hello (Instant Messaging and Picture Sharing)Google Print (online Libary, pre BETA)Google ImagesGoogle Fusion aka Personalized Homepage (BETA)Google SearchI'm Feeling LuckyFroogle (BETA)Google Answers (Payed Service)Keyhole (Payed Service)Google CalculatorGoogle CataloguesGoogle Directory (interestingly, there are 2 different Google Directories - I posted a thread on it earlier)Google LabsGoogle X (closed ages ago, but mirrored on many places on the net)Google Special SearchesGoogle UniversitiesGoogle Scholar (BETA)Google Mobile (WML and XHTML)Google SMSBloggerGoogle ToolbarMy Search History (BETA)Google GlossaryGoogle Suggest (Brilliant, yet BETA)Google DeskbarGoogle Suggest in JapaneseGoogle Sets (BETA)Google ComputeSite Flavoured Search BoxFroogle Wirelss (BETA)Google Search ApplianceGoogle Mini Search ApplianceGoogle StorePhew! jet 0 Report post Posted June 2, 2005 Picassa's Hello service is not advertised as an instant messaging service. Yes, it sends instant messages, but most things do. Its main selling point is that it is a photo sharing program, and should be noted as such rather than as an instant messaging service.

The thing is, the services Google offer with thier personalized homepage are useful, but MSN and Yahoo's have so much more. Also, Google is stepping closer and closer to becoming a web portal, rather than a search engine. Google Personalized Homepage does look promising though... but it could do with a lot of work on it. rapco 0 Report post Posted June 10, 2005 That's the Google Personalized Homepage, I mentioned it in the list earlier. You're right it is pretty useful, but at the moment, services like My MSN or My Yahoo are (I hate to say it) better... i know you mentioned it before, that's why i tried it out... and, wel... why i like the most, is tahat is not HEAVY FOR THE SITE, it does have ads everuwhere, adn i don't kno, saturated....so, i would disagree on that! Bukowski 0 Report post Posted June 10, 2005 Oh my god how I hate google. And yes, it's taking over the world. My only problem with mozilla is that the start page is google, and that it doesn't work with my proxy, but thats beside the point.
