Why Are There Two Google Directories ?

Recommended Posts

I was just browsing Google, when I realised that there are two Google directories.

The More, More, More! page on Google links to https://www.google.co.uk/dirhp, but if you go to https://www.google.de/?gfe_rd=cr&ei=7Jj5VJCzLNeqhQSitYCQAw&gws_rd=ssl you get another one.

directory.google.co.uk seems to be in the old style of Google, with the tabs at the top, as far as I can remember it used to be in the tabs with Web, Images, Groups before it was replaced by News and Froogle. Also, at the bottom of directory.google.co.uk the copyright notice reads 2004 suggesting it hasn't been updated recently.

The newer one (https://www.google.co.uk/dirhp) fits in with the current Google layout, and has been copyrighted this year.

Why have Google got two Directorys? Couldn't they just redirect the old directory.google.co.uk URL to the new page?

Well I would assume google thinkgs through how they manager their whole "infastructure" online and maybe they are having issue's with the UK's google page?I would think it's not as easy as just redirecting since a extremely high used site as google goes through insane amounts of traffic and accomadation to the public that primarely uses it(such as where the google servers are located that connect the UK people to the server and where the GOogle servers are that connect a Asian person to the UK Google server)
