Google X Did anyone see it?

Recommended Posts

I know it was quite a while ago now, but did anyone here see Google X when it went up on Google Labs a while ago?

I've found loads of mirrors and modifications of it, and I just thought is was soo awesome it deserved its own thread.

Someone's made a Google X Firefox start page - http://ww12.hostingproject.info/
There's a UK Google X made by the same person - http://ww12.hostingproject.info/

Here's an exact copy of the original Google X - http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/

And there's yet another modification (or, perhaps, an enhancement) of Google X with a better OS X "dock" animation, the ability to customise it, etc - http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/

Did anybody know why the official Google X was taken down from Google Labs? Has Google made a press release or anything?

What's the point of it? I don't get what's so special about it. All you have to do is click on the more button on the main page, and you get the same options. It's just another way to get people to use google.

I think that http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ would make a really good start page. You can customise it with what you want on the OS X "Dock" toolbar, most of the searches (e.g. Froogle, Local, etc) stay in the site, rather than being links to the Google site, the OS X "dock" animation is more realistic, and if you login to Gmail through it, the Gmail icon notifies you of new mail.

Saxsux, I doubt that. The reaon for it being called Google X might be because it uses Active X, a coding language that google i very found of (uses it for gmail). Its also a very dangerous language, cause its easy to infiltrate and plant viruses and such on unprotected computers. Thats why most browsers, Opera, Firefox and such didnt have it to begin with, but upon the introduction of gmail they both changed there browsers

It doesn't use ActiveX, its Javascript and DHTML. Its a known fact that Google X is Google's tribute to Mac OS X - look at the bottom of the screen "Roses are red, Violets a re blue, OSX rocks, homage to you".

Gmail doesn't use ActiveX either, and Firefox and Opera haven't changed to support it, to the best of my knowledge.

Why would a mianstream browser suddenly change its ways for one - albeit brilliant - email service?
