Mandrake Becomes Mandriva: New Mandrivalinux

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,
I was on my way out to gather my army for the Thai New Years water fight - the event is known as Songkran and takes place around 14-15th April. This is the day when no matter who - rich or poor - all alike get out on the streets and get drenched in ice cold water. Count in frequent patchworks of this fiery Menthol Powder on top of tham :)
While you are out on the roads, your choices are:
a. Get dunked in a drum of ice cold water every 5 mins
b. Run for your life when 15 people with really menacing appearance attack you with these ultra-powerful water-jet guns. Try taking that standing straight !! (lol)
c. Occasionally get dumped in life-size ice-coolers filled with the same menthol powder
d. All of the above :)

Anyway, my whole point of dropping back is to share this hot news I received just now.
MandrakeSoft isn't MandrakeSoft anymore and thus the well-known MandrakeLinux isn't going to be called by it's old name either. In this news flash I received in my email just now, I found out - it's going to be called Mandriva from now on - in view of their merger with Conectiva - as also to escape the clutches of a huge lawsuit by Hearst Corporation. Thus their product Mandrake Linux is going to be known as MandrivaLinux from now on. Will this change of name bring about any of the much needed changes in their OS ? Who knows (I'd give them a very bad rating on their packaging - coz their version of desktop linux comes with utilities some of which haven't been updated over past 3-4 years !!!)

Here's what came along in my newsletter:

Flash Newsletter: Mandrakesoft Announces Name Change!

It's been in the air for a few weeks...

After spending weeks balancing pros and cons, Mandrakesoft has decided
to change its name!

The name change will apply worldwide to both the company and its
products. The management team sees two good reasons for this change:

1. The recent Mandrakesoft - Conectiva merger calls for a new identity
that better represents the combination of two key companies and
their global presence.

2. The long-winding trademark lawsuit with Hearst Corporation has
reached a point where we decided it is more reasonable for us to
move forward. By adopting a new name, we eliminate the liability
attached to the Mandrakesoft name and we can focus on what is
important to us: developing and delivering great technology and
solutions to both our customers and our user community.

We will endeavor to build even stronger brand recognition in our new
name. So what is the new name?

The winner is ...

Why Mandriva? This new name, simple and efficient, is the synthesis of
Mandrakesoft and Conectiva. This will further a smooth transition and
will build on our existing brand recognition in the IT world.

hm.. maybe its a whole new operating system theyre going to make? i would like to see what they will come up with on the system. from the looks of the mandrake operating system. it looks really good. thats what made me want to use it, and the stablitity. but personally i havent used the madrake distros as i have no knowledge about the system.so if the companies merged to together i wouold expect to have a better looking operating system in the future from "MandrivaLunix".
