lacking_imagination 0 Report post Posted February 10, 2005 I have determined why people still use windows. They are afraid of change. They can't handle a computer that works for more than 5 minutes at a time. They like having a huge new update where everything is changed and the old stuff is no longer supported, forcing you to upgrade. That's why i use windows still. if my computer actually worked right, i would poop my pants hope you found this funnypeaceaaron
Trekkie101 0 Report post Posted February 10, 2005 I stick to windows as my pc manufacture has got a forced boot sequence that linux doesnt work with, it checks for a hidden partition that linux moved and this caused mass breakage that im still fighting to fix. All IBM compliant systems should be able to boot from any primary partition (in case of windows) and even logical drives in extended partitions (in case of *nix). Why don't you try wiping out all partitions and re-create everything from scratch - unless you have a lot of data that you want to backup and are unable to access the partitions coz they are NTFS !! In that case you will be in a BIG FIX !! In that case, you can use this freeware tool called NTFS Reader for DOS available @ http://www.ntfs.com/products.htm which if used in conjunction with a dos boot disk - will be able to read you NTFS patitions.. Here's a brief report on the software: NTFS Reader for DOS is a FREEWARE * Can be saved and run from bootable floppy (download boot disk image) * Displays complete physical and logical drive information * Supports IDE / ATA / SCSI drives * Supports large (more than 8GB) Hard Drive * Supports NTFS, NTFS5 file systems for reading * Supports FAT12, FAT16, FAT32 file systems for data writing * Supports compressed and fragmented files on NTFS * Supports partitions created in MS-DOS, Windows XP.2000.NT.ME.98.95 * Displays non-english and long file names * Ability to preview file(s)/folder(s) before copying * Supports search by file name or mask * Disk Viewer displays content of the file in Hex/Text mode They've got FREEWARE boot images for both FLOPPIES AND BOOTABLE CDS along with the NTFS Reader. Hope this helps
pixelsmack 0 Report post Posted February 10, 2005 this is getting such an old topic of discussion, can you honestly imagine your gran using a *nix system to book her holidays and find local bingo clubs on? even the friendlist distributions take time for someone very familiar with computers to pick up. there is very little support other than online in quite spacific groups. support for all the software average joe uses is non-existant. i don't know about other countries but i have never been in a computer store and seen games and software avalible in a *nix format. People arn't afraid of change, i used linux soley on my machine and came back to windows because although i have a server running it on my network i didn't feel it was suitable for a desktop. Sorry to disapoint you here but there is very little to back up your argument that everyone and his dog should use linux for every possible computing scenario.Don't get me wrong however i do support fully the OSS community and what they have created and ontinued to support. I also disagree with M$ on almost all of there policys regarding software distribution etc however i don't feel it is a good thing to do to start ostracising people because they don't use linux. The gpl is a licence that basically states you are free to do what you want, why is this stance not adopted by the pople who fight vaimiently for its vadility over everything else?
